In the history of Nepal the small Newar town of Kirtipur is unique. Even though the founding of the town dates back to the 12th century and the time of King Shivadev its true origin is probably far older as discoveries that date back to the Pre-Lichchavi epoch indicate that it could be one of the oldest settlements in the entire Kathmandu Valley.In the course of time, and particularly under the reign of the Malla Kings, Kirtipur developed into a small independent town with several beautiful temples and sanctuaries. The design of today’s Buddhist Chilandeo Stupa dates back to the 16th century but the original building is attributed to the Indian King, ASHOKA. Under the reign of this legendary leader in the third century A.D., Buddhism began to spread across the length and breadth of the Indian subcontinent. The many years of Kirtipur’s independence came to an end in 1482 when the town’s inhabitants reluctantly came under the rule of the nearby city of Patan. Today the town of almost fifteen thousand inhabitants is divided into two areas. The eastern section is predominantly inhabited by Buddhists while the upper part of the town consists mainly of Hindus. However, both areas of the town are united by an idyllic rural atmosphere. Due to the declining economic situation in Kirtipur the town’s cultural monuments appear to represent the last ray of hope for its inhabitants and a much needed possible source of future income.

Kirtipur is an ancient city of Nepal. It is located in the Kathmandu Valley 5 km south-west of the city of Kathmandu. It is one of the five municipalities in the valley, the others being Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur and Madhyapur Thimi. It is one of the most famous and religious places to visit. Many people visit this place to not only to see the beauty of nature but also to visit temples and for Newari foods. The city was listed as a UNESCO tentative site in 2008
Kirtipur's history dates from 1099 A.D. It was part of the territory of Lalitpur at the time of the invasion of the Kathmandu Valley by the Gorkhali king Prithvi Narayan Shah in the 18th century.[3]
In 1767, Kirtipur was annexed to the Gorkhali kingdom by Prithvi Narayan Shah following the Battle of Kirtipur. He conquered the town on his third attempt, after entering it by trickery. After this, he cut off the noses of the people (both male and female) over 13 years of age in the city.[4][5]
This was the site of an inspirational peaceful demonstration of the people in the 2006 mass uprising that overthrew the powers of the king. It is considered to be an anti-monarchy city due to its bitter history against the Shah dynasty whose modern founder conquered the city insultingly, which was followed by negligence of the administration and development by subsequent rulers.

Kirtipur is one of my favorite cities in Nepal. Often overlooked and ignored by tourists, Kirtipur is undoubtedly one of the best places to experience the authentic Newari way of life. This is also where my husband, Krishna, used to live when he came back after his studies in India.
Kirtipur (‘Kipoo’ in Nepali) is known as the city of glory (‘Kirti’ means ‘glory’ and ‘pur’ means ‘city’). Charming and quaint, it is no wonder that Kirtipur has become one of the getaways of choice for Kathmanduites. Located southwest of Kathmandu, atop a hill near the Tribhuvan university, Kirtipur is a remarkable microcosm not to be missed.

The Kathmandu Valley (Nepali: काठमाडौं उपत्यका) (Nepal Bhasa: स्वनिगः and also नेपाः गाः), located in Nepal, lies at the crossroads of ancient civilizations of Asia, and has at least 130 important monuments, including several pilgrimage sites for Hindus and Buddhists. There are seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites within this valley.
Historically, the valley and adjoining areas made up a confederation known as Nepal Mandala. Until the 15th century, Bhaktapur was its capital when two other capitals, Kathmandu and Lalitpur, were established. After the annexation of the valley by the Gorkha Kingdom, and subsequent conversion of the valley as the capital of their empire, the designation of Nepal was extended to every land they conquered.
