The town of Kirovsk (don’t mess it with “Kirov”) is located right under the Khibiny, the largest mountain range on the Kola Peninsula in Murmansk region of Russia.
It is founded in 1929, after the geologists discovered a huge deposits of apatites and nephelines - the minerals widely used in agriculture, ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, production of ceramics and glass.
Originally, the town of Kirovsk was named as Khibinogorsk which is literally “Khibiny Mountain Town”, but in 1934 it was renamed after Sergey Kirov, one of the most significant politicians of the early USSR period.

Kirovsk ja Apatiitti Kuolan niemimaalla, Kirovsk on lähinnä hiihtokohde, Apatiitti kaivospaikkakunta. Apatiitti on suhteellisen nuori kaupunki, se on perustettu vuonna 1968. Kaupungissa on mm. erilaisia tiedelaitoksia.
Kirovskin laidalla kohoaa Hiipinä-tunturi jolla on myös laskettelurinteitä. Hiipinä-tunturi on vaikuttava näky - se ei näy valitettavasti kunnolla videossa. En tajunnut aikoinaan kuvata sitä kunnolla. Video on vuodelta 2008. Videossa oleva hotelli on Severnaja. Huhun mukaan mm. Vladimir Putin olisi yöpynyt hotellissa. Ulkomailta mm. norjalaiset kuulemma käyvät hiihtämässä Hiipinä-tuntureilla. Näillä tuntureilla on myös kuulemma nähty mm. Ville Haapasalon mainitsema lumimies Afonja.

This video is about Kirovsk which is a very cold part located in Northern Russia. We visited Snow Village and also Bigwood ski resort while we were in Kirovsk. We went to Kirovsk with a local tour guide from Murmansk. We have given the details of our tour and cost in this video.
In Snow Village, you can see beautiful creations of the artists of Arctic region who do creations using ice and snow. They are nicely illuminated as well. We went to Bigwood ski resort which is located in the Khibiny Mountains. Bigwood is the largest ski resort in the Russian part of the European continent and it is the northernmost ski area in the European continent. You can experience a stunning panoramic view of Kirovsk town and surrounding area at the top of the ski resort.
Kirovsk has gained a lot of attention due to mining industry. Therefore we visited a museum in Kirovsk related to mining which is operated by JSC Apatit company. Here you can explore samples of lot of minerals discovered in Khibiny Massif and a ton of other information. The entrance and museum tour is also free for visitors. Enjoy our video! Thank you. Khibiny for 4 days (July 2017)
Short trekking in the vicinities of Kirovsk. Radial hiking from the MSU research station to Aiquaivenchorr and Pachvumchorr. The year 2017 was extremely snowy, so we were not able to reach more remote parts of the mountains.
Khibiny are low (max.1201m) peneplenized mountains with distinctive glacial landforms. The hiking is wild, no prepared routes, so you will definitely feel the taste of discovery there. The main hub for travellers is a nearby city Apatity with its airport (connections to Moscow and St.Petersburg) and a railway station. Kirovsk was built in 1920s when precious apatite and nepheline were found in the Khibiny massif and experienced a fast growth. After the fall of the USSR the city lost almost a half of its population. However, now Kirovsk is reviving due to the influence of Phosagro company and the development of tourism, especially skiing resort.
Main tourist attractions: Apatit exhibition centre (history of mining in the area with a fine collection of minerals and rocks), the northenmost botanical garden in Russia, museum of Venedikt Erofeev (author of Moscow - Petushki), Snow village, ski resort Big Wood.
