Papua New Guinea & Solomon Islands Travel Guide

Papua New Guinea & Solomon Islands Travel Guide

Papua New Guinea is an island nation in Oceania. A country of immense cultural and biological diversity, it’s known for its beaches and coral reefs. Inland are active volcanoes, granite Mt. Wilhelm, dense rain forest and hiking routes like the Kokoda Trail. There are also traditional tribal villages, many with their own languages.

Papua New Guinea is just to the south of the equator and has a tropical climate. In the highlands, though, temperatures are distinctly cool. The (very) wet season runs from about December to March. The best months for trekking are June to September.

The Solomon Islands, a nation of hundreds of islands in the South Pacific, has many WWII-era sites. Guadalcanal, a province and one of the archipelago’s largest islands, honors fallen Allied soldiers at its U.S. War Memorial. Guadalcanal is also home to the nation’s capital, Honiara, whose bustling Central Market showcases the islands’ produce and traditional handicrafts.

Honiara, on the island of Guadalcanal, is the capital city of the Solomon Islands. Its buzzing Central Market sells local produce and handicrafts. Traditional frescoes adorn the conical National Parliament building. The National Museum has WWII relics and cultural artifacts. The Botanical Gardens includes an orchid house. Outside the city, the waters of the Mataniko Falls thunder down a rocky cliff into a canyon.
The American War Memorial has descriptions on marble slabs of local battles fought during the Guadalcanal Campaign of WWII. Built by Japanese veterans, the Solomons Peace Memorial Park commemorates those who died. West of the city, Vilu War Museum has memorials and WWII aircraft. Nearby, Bonegi Beach, with 2 sunken wartime vessels, is a popular site for diving and snorkeling. East, Bloody Ridge is a hill defended by U.S. troops against the Japanese in 1942. It has a small, pyramid-shaped U.S. memorial. With views over the area, nearby Mount Austen was a strategic WWII site.

Port Moresby is the sprawling capital of Papua New Guinea, a country north of Australia. The vast anthropological collection at the PNG National Museum and Art Gallery includes masks and carved wooden poles. Nearby, Parliament House is modeled on a traditional house of worship. Its entrance is dominated by a large, colorful mosaic featuring national motifs. There are views over Port Moresby Harbour from Paga Hill.
Nearby traditional villages include Koki, built on stilts in a bay. To the north, Port Moresby Nature Park combines botanical gardens, featuring many orchids, with a zoo housing tree kangaroos, parrots and reptiles. The Bomana War Cemetery holds the graves of many Papua New Guinean, Australian and other soldiers who died during WWII. Hikers are drawn to Varirata National Park in the east, with its resident wallabies and birds of paradise. Nearby, the town of Sogeri is at one end of the long, mountainous Kokoda Track, which passes through dense rainforest. Diving is popular on coral reefs off the coast.

Solomon Islands: A Breathtaking Adventure

In November 2018, I spent 4 weeks in Gizo, Solomon Islands on a medical elective at the amazing Gizo Hospital.

I had the most amazing time both in and outside of the hospital. This video shares some of the highlights of my trip, as my friends and I travel to different beautiful islands during our spare time.

We spent most of our time snorkelling and enjoying the breathtaking views of the pristine waters surrounding the islands.

List of islands/resorts we visited in order: Fatboys resort, Sanbis resort, and everyone's favourite, Imagination Island where we spent two incredible nights staying on an over-water cottage. We spent the days snorkelling amongst beautiful sea creatures (and sharks!), and we were lucky enough to stargaze during a prominent meteor shower. The clear sky allowed for the stars to shine at its brightest that night on Imagination Island.

I had the experience of a lifetime there both as a medical student and traveller.

If anyone wants more info regarding travelling to Gizo or the Solomons, or a medical student thinking of doing an elective over there (trust me the medical experience was awesome, you get to see and do so much! Unfortunately due to confidentiality I did not film in the hospital), give me a shout and I'll be more than happy to share more of my experience/advice!

My time there couldn't have been anywhere near as incredible as it was without the people there. My friends, the lovely doctors, and of course the amazing local people of the Solomon Islands! Thank you everyone so much for the experience of a lifetime!

PS. I apologise for the shaky, low quality video and rough edit, I have zero experience in editing videos and prior to this trip I bought the cheapest action camera last minute! I have since upgraded to a GoPro though!

Honiara, Solomon Islands 2018

5 Days in Puerto Princesa, Palawan

5 Days Sembreak Vacation in PPS

Day 1
Arrived in Puerto Princesa at 7 in the morning. I never thought this is so big. Checked in at Julietas Pensions House. Had a nap and explored the city to buy some necessities. It's a good place I can already tell

Day 2
Booked the Honday Bay tour. Island hopped to Starfish Island, Luli Island, and Cowrie island. Nice islets with blue waters I was so damned relaxed. Nighttime had supper in Kalaui Bar where I had the best seafood in my life. Oh gosh, mouthwatering meals were so inviting that I finished two cups of rice. Didn't care at all if I will have my tummy bloated for the beach in a bikini all I wanted to do is eat haha

Day 3
Booked The Subterranean Underground River National Park Tour. met new friends on the Van. Kaidee, Shandelle, and Ben beautiful people with beautiful minds.
First, we hit the Mangrove Forest your we learned about different species of Mangroves and bumped into some Monitor Lizards, colorful tiny crabs, and Black and Yellow Striped Snake sleeping on top of the tree. Scary!
Had a good buffet lunch. Live band on the background and fresh seaweeds, cucumbers, onions, and tomato with spicy vinegar, promisingly is the bomb. Like while I'm writing this I'm salivating haha. Moving on. Headed to the port after lunch and waited for like 2 hours to get to the boat that took us to the island where the river is. We met some monkeys along the way. Kinda terrifying. Kady left her bag on the ground for a little while and the alpha male long-tailed macaw came over to her bag and opened it. She tried to snatch the bag off the monkey but the monkey got furious opened his mouth and showed his Long-Sharp Fangs. And thats the time we knew we wouldn't win the battle. The monkey opened her bag *yeah I was surprised the monkey knows how to open the bag* and then it took the bio-oil from her bag and ran away. Haha, that's scary funny. So moving into the underground river tour. We started slow and every meter and every minute we spent inside the cave was spectacular. Different animals Vegetables and a lot of things formed in the rocks and stalactites when we started to use our imagination. Bats were flying in and out but most were sleeping cuz yeah bats are nocturnal they were hibernating when we get there. Waters dripping from the ceiling and when we looked up we saw the magical shrine inside the cave. We even came to the cathedral area where you can different forms of religious things you can on a real cathedral. Images of Jesus and the like. Then you came to an end and I realized nature is so magical that it can create a mystical place like this. Ended the tour with some new friends that I met up after in a bar had some beers went home and prepare for our next adventure.

Day 4
I and my new friends rented a car in the city. Shopped some groceries and headed north to Nagtabon beach waves were crashing and coral blue waters and still we decided to go a little bit far north so we drove 17 mins more and reached Talaudyong beach. White sand perfect 1 km shoreline and Coral blue waters and Dancing waves welcomed us. Drank some beers and we came running in the waters. The sand floor there is flat so it wasn't scary. The sand is also very fin I can feel the tiny bits of soft sand under my feet. We even had the whole beach to ourselves. I feel so blessed we had sun we had the beach to ourselves we had drinks and fun conversations. What else can you wish for? We spent the whole day there exploring the shore back and forth and left the beach with smiling faces. What a day my Lord.

Day 4
Time to go back to Manila. Had a heart attack cuz i thought my flights were going to get canceled due to typhoon but blessed enough i can fly back. I miss home and my classmates and my friends. But now while I'm writing this, miles from the ground and on a plane. I'm reminiscing about all the things that I've done during this vacation. I'm lucky and blessed to see and experience nature like this. You took my heart in a while Puerto Princesa. Thank you.

How Scientists Are Restoring The Great Barrier Reef | Travel + Leisure

Despite mass coral bleaching events in the summers of 2016 and 2017 that badly damaged parts of the reef, much of the marine park — roughly the size of Japan — continues to thrive. A visit to the largest living structure on Earth remains an experience of a lifetime.

Over the past couple of years, coral has regenerated and local scientists have developed innovative ways to foster coral growth both in and out of the water.

Johnny Gaskell and his team have been propagating coral in nurseries built within the marine park, and also in custom-built tanks where the corals spend four to five months growing before being planted back into damaged reef sites.
