The Crying Mountains of Kibungan Cross-Country Benguet Philippines | Travel Philippines
Kibungan, Benguet, is a quiet mountain-top municipality situated just 62 kilometers north of Baguio City. The deep ravines, tall pine ridges, and cool atmosphere give the place the feel of a foreign country – of course, the rice terraces carved into the slope by native hands serve to remind visitors that this scenic town is still very much within the Philippines.
Several trails crisscross the town and its many mountains, including some footpaths that lead down into La Union and Ilocos Sur. But the most popular of these trails is the Kibungan Circuit, which has two variations. Route 1 is an overnight hike that climbs up to Mt. Tagpaya (1,820 meters above sea level). Once at the peak, hikers can climb down a different path that passes by Lungsad Falls. Route 2 is slightly more challenging and can take up an additional day: from Mt. Tagpaya, hikers can continue on to the higher peaks of Mt. Oten (1,875 MASL) and Mt. Tagpew (2,105 MASL).
On a clear day, the Kibungan Circuit offers majestic views of the rest of Benguet Province, and a sweeping panorama of La Union, Ilocos Sur, and the West Philippine Sea. But even without these sights, hikers looking for some peace and tranquility can be assured of a quiet trek through idyllic forests, mountain ridges, and rice terraces.

KIBUNGAN-BAKUN TRAVERSE: Holy Week Climb
One of the longest hiking trails I've experienced. First day of hike was cut short due to hot weather and condition of some group members. The next day exposed the team to a strenuous 12-hour hike from Mt. Tagpaya of Kabunian, Benguet to Mt. Kabunian of Bakun, Benguet. Last day of hike divided the group into two, some proceeded to Mt. Tenglawan (Carrot Peak) while others went down to jump-off of Mt. Kabunian.

Lubo Lake | Lubo, Kibungan, Benguet shot on Mavic Mini 2
Short video taken at the old mining site at Lubo, Kibungan, Benguet
It was an open pit abandoned by the BONENG MINES operated by the WMC due to bankruptcy. The pit was filled with water in the early 2001 due continues rains and typhoons and no way to go out.

Philippine Northern Adventure Trail: La Union - Ilocos Sur - Kibungan, Benguet Trail Loop
Here's a 30 minute vlog of our adventure trail from La Union, passing through Ilocos Sur via Alilem then all the way to Kibungan, Benguet and back to La Union via Bagulin. Almost 200 km of pure adventure ride. Roughly 50% offroad and 50% on road. Good for beginners to intermediate trail riders using proper trail bikes.
For those of you who are planning to try and ride this route, I highly recommend you to hire a local trail guide from La Union. Bring enough trail food, water and spare inner tubes. Make sure your bike is in top condition because there's no shops or even vulcanizing shops out there. For adventure bikes 400cc and up, it will be an advantage if you have enough experience riding offroad and you are in good shape and prepared your self mentally and physically.
