Today’s Iran is a complicated, intriguing, but also a fascinating place, with some of the most welcoming and curious people you will ever meet. I traveled through Iran in 2013, and in this video I take you back to 10 favorite places that I visited.

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video:
We start this journey in Esfahan, one of Iran’s most beautiful and friendliest cities, attracting tourists and travelers from afar. It is filled with captivating monuments, historic buildings, tranquil gardens, museums, and in general provides a great introduction to daily life in Iran.
After Esfahan, we travel to Kerman, a city on the fringes of the desert. It is most popular for what lies outside the city, the remains of the ‘Arg’ (an ancient citadel), and the small town of Rayen with its beautiful gardens and shrine. Not far from here are the Kaluts, some of Iran’s most spectacular desert scenery. These places are best reached by private vehicle, as public transport here is limited.
Iran has a long coastline and several island, the largest of which is Qeshm, in the Persian Gulf. This island is relatively underdeveloped and retains much of its traditional characteristics. It’s a great way to get an insight into local Bandari culture, and to witness some of the local economy at work, including agriculture, fishing, and the construction of classic ‘lenge’ boats.
Shiraz is regarded as the center of Persian culture for the last two millennia, and has some of the country’s most beautiful ancient bazaars and historic mosques. It’s also home for the tombs of Hafez and Sa’di, two poets that hold a special place in Iranian society and literature. The ruins of Persepolis, just outside Shiraz, evoke images of a thriving ancient Persia, and should not be missed.
The next destination is Tehran, the bustling capital city, and beating economic heart, of Iran. As the most secular and liberal city in the country, it’s the best place to learn about modern Iran. Qom, on the other hand, is one of the conservative ‘strongholds’ in the country, and provides an interesting contrast with Tehran.
We travel further to Kandovan, a beautiful mountain village where some of the houses are carved out of eroded rocks. It’s near Tabriz, the final destination in the video, famous for its magnificent bazaar.

In the 5th episode, I’m leaving Yazd and on the road to the city of Kerman, the gateway to the Lut desert.
It may be a travel day but there’s some amazing stop offs on the way including Saryazd Castle قلعه سریزد, Zein-o-din Caravanserai کاروانسرای زین الدین, Shah Abbasi Caravanserai رستوران سنتی آستانه, Imamzadeh Mohammad Saleh امامزاده محمد صالح.

In the late summer of 2022 I embarked on an epic road trip around Iran, during a time of unrest as protests escalated across the country.
Covering around 6200km over 24 days, I was able to see this incredible country in a way that many are not fortunate enough to see, and to record my experiences in a way that has not been done before.
Safety concerns meant that I had to limit my filming on occasion, and stay well away from any signs of the troubles going on.
However, what I did see was an incredible insight. Some of the most wonderful and welcoming people, incredible history and culture, and mind blowing food.

Prince Mahan Garden is one of the 9 world-famous Iranian gardens that has been registered in the World Heritage List.
Sar-e-Dar has a very beautiful architecture that distinguishes it from other Iranian gardens.
Its fountains caress the eyes of every viewer. These fountains along the garden are the most beautiful fountains in Iranian gardens.
The length of Prince Kerman Garden is 407 meters and its width is 122 meters with an area of 5.5 hectares and it is the largest and most beautiful historical garden in Iran.
This garden is visited by countless tourists from different parts of the country every year, especially in summer and spring, who choose this spectacular and charming garden to watch.
The Prince's Garden was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on July 20, 2011.

As one of the desert cities, Kerman has had many aqueducts and ice house ,ice house that were made with clay and mud and kept ice in the excruciating heat of summer. The tips of the ice house were made in a conical shape so that the least amount of sun would shine on them, high walls were built around the ice house to reduce the temperature of the surrounding air by creating a shadow.
