The south-eastern corner of Kazakhstan is a wild and wonderful part of the world and this brand-new cycling holiday (set up using our 15 years experience of running bike trips in the Tien Shan) shows it off perfectly.
KE has a long history of running mountain biking holidays in Kazakhstan (first trip in 2004), but this latest version is a little bit different. We have reduced the difficulty a little whilst expanding the range of the territory that we cover. We start out with a week in the northern foothills of the Tien Shan, cycling on a mix of surfaced and grassy dirt roads that cut through the open grassland or ‘steppe’ of several picturesque valleys. There are isolated farming villages in this area and also scattered camps of nomadic Kazakh shepherds who come to these upland valleys in summer with their flocks of sheep and herds of horses.
Riding cross-country between riverside camps, we’ll have the chance to take tea at the yurt encampments of these charming people. An early highlight of the holiday is our night at a yurt camp in the spectacular Charyn Canyon where we can do some exploring and experience the magic of sunrise on the canyon’s striking rock formations. Then, following a route that dates back to the Silk Road, we cycle up onto the Kegen Plateau and spend a night beside Lake Tuzkol where the views extend to Khan Tengri (7010m) and the other central Tien Shan summits.
Transferring into the Altyn-Emel National Park, we then have 2 days of exploration in a beautiful desert world, cycling between outrageously colourful sandstone formations and hiking to the top of the 120 metre high ‘Singing Sand Dune’. This is an outstanding Central Asian cycling holiday and a real adventure travel experience in a remote, seldom visited and culturally intriguing area.

To & From Kyrgyzstan
Official Kazakh–Kyrgyz border crossings are largely hassle free, but the ‘green border’ – trails through the mountains, without border posts – has been closed for several years.
From Almaty's Sayran bus station, there are plenty of minibuses (1500T, three to four hours, hourly 6am to 11pm) and shared taxis (3500T) to Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan, crossing the border at Korday. Minibuses and shared taxis also run from Taraz to Bishkek, and there are also buses from Shymkent and Turkestan to Bishkek – all crossing the border at Chaldybar.
From May to October, the scenic and laid-back Karkara valley border crossing offers an alternate route between Almaty and Issyk-Köl. No public transport makes this crossing but a taxi from Almaty/Kegen to the border should cost around 8000/5000T while onward transit from the border to Karakol is around 3500 som (around $51). Taxis rarely wait at this little-used border, so it's best to make transport arrangements in advance.

As you can see in the video, the road surface is far from ideal in places, despite the fact that the track was built just a few years ago and the passage on it is paid.
During the trip, a strong wind Chilik was blowing, so I had to constantly catch the car so as not to fly off the road.
As you can see, the land in this area is actively cultivated by farmers who grow various crops on it. Animal husbandry is also actively developed.
After Chilik, at the junction, I turned right, at the sign for Charyn Canyon, passed Baiseit, and then turned right towards the village of Malybai to get to one old highway, deserted and in some places completely abandoned

The Khorgos tract is a highway (highway) connecting the city of Almaty with the Altynkol station south of Khorgos in Kazakhstan - part of the international project Western Europe - Western China. The total length is 304 kilometers. Part of the Kazakh highway A-2, European E 40 and Asian AH5 routes.
The highway was built from 2012 to 2017 as part of the International Transport Corridor Europe - Western China as part of Kazakhstan's international obligations. About 3,000 people took part in the construction of the route. Part of the new road was merged with the Kuldzhinsky tract. The Kazakhstan section of the route originates from the International Center for Cross-Border Cooperation (ICBC) Khorgos on the border with China.
Sections of the route passing through the desert and semi-desert zones were protected in a new way - earlier trees were planted along the route, now the dunes are covered with a net, thanks to which they are overgrown with grass and strengthened. Throughout the journey, in some places, crossings were made to drive livestock (cattle passes). A new road bridge was built across the Ili River, the old one was reconstructed.
After Chilik there is an interchange with a turn to Kegen and Kolzhat. The Charyn canyon is 25 km across the steppe. Parallel in some places with the Zhetygen-Altynkоl railway

Zbliżamy się do granicy między Kirgistanem a Kazachstanem obok miejscowości Kegen. Jest to granica na wschodzie Kirgizji i dla nas była jak najbardziej po drodze bo wybieramy się nad Kanion Czaryński. Zaczynają się stepy i pustkowia, ale ma to swój klimat. Zapraszamy.

Na początku 2017 roku wyruszyliśmy w rowerową podróż. Jej celem był dojazd do Mongolii, ale też poznawanie krajów i miejscowych ludzi. Czasami zostawialiśmy rowery i podróżowaliśmy autostopem. A przez Morze Kaspijskie przepłynęliśmy towarowym promem. W 252 dni przyjechaliśmy przez 16 krajów i pokonaliśmy ponad 27.000 kilometrów.

In 2017 we went on a bicycle journey. The goal was Mongolia, but also to get to know new countries and the local people. Sometimes, we left the bikes somewhere and hitchhiked, and the Caspian Sea we crossed on a cargo ferry, on which next to our bikes a camel was parked. In 252 days, we crossed 16 countries and travelled a distance of over 27,000 km.

Charyn Canyon (also known as Sharyn Canyon) is a canyon on the Sharyn River in Kazakhstan (200 kilometres (120 mi) east of Almaty, close to the Chinese border). The canyon is roughly 90 kilometres (56 mi) in length. It is part of the Charyn National Park (established on 23 February 2004), and is located within the territory of the Uygur District, Raiymbek District and Enbekshikazakh District (of the Almaty Province). Over time, the canyon has gained colorful formations of varying shapes and sizes. Though it is much smaller than the Grand Canyon, it has been described as being equally impressive.
The Charyn Canyon stretches 154km along the Charyn River (one of the deepest rivers of the Northern Tien Shan mountains). Wind, water and sand sculpted Charyn’s red sandstone to form its shapes and shades. Some of the cliffs resemble particular figures, which is why some parts of the canyon are also called the Valley of Castles, the Witche’s Gorge, and the Ghosts Gorge.
The multicolored rock layers are the product of different stages of sediment deposits, which includes volcanic lava rocks at the bottom, andred debris on top. The Charyn Canyon consists of 5 different canyons: the Valley of Castles, the Temirlik Canyon, the Yellow Canyon, the Red Canyon and the Bestamak Canyon. The Valley of Castles is the most popular part of the Charyn Canyon.
Adventure sports activities in the river include white-water rafting and canoeing. Fishing for the local species of fish called Naked Osman is also common. Further downstream of the canyon, a dry zone of the gorge called the Red canyon or Valley of Castles is located. It stretches over about 1km and has a depth of about 100 metres (330 ft). There is a track at the valley of the gorge that has naturally sculpted red stone formations.
The Relic Forest is located approximately 20 kilometres (12 mi) away from the canyon. The forest, located under the umbrage of the canyon. is known as the Sogdian ash (Ash Tree) (a tree that is said to be a derivative from the Ice age). The site is considered unique on various accounts. It was declared a protected reserve in 1964. It is now integrated with the Charyn National Park. Apart from the Ash Tree, other tree categories in the area include the willow, poplar, and barberry.
The area can be accessed from a road originating at Almaty that passes through Kokpek, Shonzy and Zharkent. One of the most stricking parts of the canyon is known as Valley of Castles, for its unusual rock formations created by wind, sun, and water and vertical cliffs reminding the ancient castles.

Чарынский каньон

Река Чарын, являющаяся крупным притоком реки Или протекает на востоке Алматинской области. Основной исток Чарына река Шалкудесу берет начало на южных склонах хребта Кетмень (Узынкара). В среднем течении река называется Кегень. После выхода в Жаланашскую долину река называется Чарын.
Ниже Бестобинского водохранилища и Мойнакской ГЭС река протекает по глубокому каньону. В этом месте она разделяет горные хребты Кетмень в отроге Кулуктау на востоке и хребет Кунгей Алатау на западе. Затем река пересекает с юга на северо-восток Жаланашскую и Согутинскую долины и огибает с востока хребет Торайгыр разделяющий эти долины
Протяженность реки примерно 300-320 километров. Река на всем протяжении сильно меандрирует (петляет) и делится в пойме на несколько равнозначных проток.
Чарын принимает множество притоков с северного склона хребтов Терскей и Кунгей Алатау и став полноводной рекой, прорезает восточные части Жаланашской впадины и гор Торайгыр грандиозным каньоном. В Жаланашской долине, каньон приобретает трапециевидную форму, достигая ширины три километра и глубиной от 200 до 300 метров. Здесь каньон называется Актогай (Белый лес). В восточной части хребта Торайгыр Чарын образует узкий, глубокий каньон – Куртогай (Могильный лес). Каньон протянулся до слияния с рекой Темирлик. Его протяженность составляет 24 км.
В самом начале каньона Куртогай с правой стороны, южнее гор Кату находится долина «Узунбулак» («Долина Юрт», «Желтый каньон»).
Наиболее известным и самым популярным объектом в каньоне Куртогай является «Долина замков».
Еще один каньон, относящийся к каньону Куртогай, находится с правой стороны каньона между Долиной замков и правым притоком реки Темерлик. Он называется «Малым каньоном», так как является «Долиной замков» в миниатюре.
Следующим самостоятельным каньоном является правый приток реки Чарын, река Темирлик. Эта река является последним крупным притоком реки Чарын.
Ниже слияния Темирлика с Нарыном каньон меняет название с Куртогая на Мойынтогай. Этот каньон практически не известен, т. к. подъездные пути к нему отсутствуют. Увидеть его красоты удается немногим.
Протяженность этой части каньона 16 км
Сразу за каньоном Мойынтогай долина реки долина Чарына становится плоской и широкой, это место называется Сартогай (Желтый лес)
Река принимает плавное течение, и проходя через «Ясеневую рощу», разбивается на множество русел.
В роще произрастает уникальное дерево, сохраняющее свой вид более 2 миллионов лет, палеогеновый реликт,– это согдийский ясень. Протяженность рощи вдоль русла реки составляет 20 км.
Ниже Ясеневой рощи река Чарын» начинается дельта Чарына, где от основного русла веером расходятся постоянные действующие и временные русла, и оросительные каналы. Основными руслами являются протоки – западный Караерень и восточный Ташкарасу. Пробиваясь сквозь пески пустыни Карабаскум, реки текут, извиваясь (меандрируют), образуя петли, которые потом теряют связь с основной рекой и рядом с руслом остаются водоемы называемые старицами (старое русло) или протоками.
Ниже села Чарын река выходит в Илийскую долину, где в южной расширенной части долины Караереня, ниже села Чарын, в песках Карабаскум расположено «Деревянное озеро». С северо-западной стороны котловины озера находятся невысокие барханы. Здесь аккумулируется песок, выносимый западными и юго-западными ветрами из песчаного массива Карабаскум
Ниже Деревянного озера находится пойма реки Чарын. В реку Или Чарын впадает несколькими рукавами.
В Чарынском каньоне благодаря редкому сочетанию ряда геологических факторов сохранились интересные местонахождения древнейших, ныне вымерших представителей фауны и флоры. В обрывах Чарына найдены богатые скопления окаменелых костей (мастодонты, слоны, носороги, и многие другие).
По берегам реки находятся сотни курганов, свидетельствуя о проживании здесь в прошлые века множества разных племен и народов. Одна из ветвей Великого Шелкового Пути проходила вдоль Чарынского каньона.
Все объекты реки Чарын каньон находится на территории Государственного национального природного парка «Чарын». Здесь проложены автомобильные, водные и пешеходные туристические маршруты. В «Долину замков» в воскресные дни совершатся многочисленные природоведческие экскурсии. Любители пеших путешествий совершают походы от верхнего моста до «Долины замков» вдоль русла реки внутри каньона.
Туристы водники каждое лето едут к одной из крупнейших на Северном Тянь-Шане реке. Основной участок сплавов в Чарынском каньоне протянулся от широкой речной долины Актогай до урочища Сарытогай. Река славится очень сложными водными маршрутами. Простых маршрутов на этой реке нет.
