Adlerdenkmal: The “Eagle Monument” in Keetmanshoop commemorates the German soldiers who were killed in the Herero and Nama wars in 1897, 1903 and 1906-1907 respectively. It is shaped in the form of an obelisk and topped with the German Imperial eagle in bronze. Another memorial at the same site commemorates those who fell during the course of WWII. The latter, however, is not part of the national monument. The monument and bandstand are situated in the center of Keetmanshoop in the little park adjacent to the Post Office in Keetmanshoop, the capital of the south of Namibia.

Keetmanshoop railway station was erected in 1908, when the territory was colonised by Imperial Germany. It is part of the TransNamib Railway, and is located along the Windhoek to Upington line that was inaugurated in 1915 and connects Namibia with South Africa. Keetmanshoop also has a junction to Seeheim and Aus, completed in 1908. The station was rebuilt in 1928 after old building was damaged by fire.

Mesosaurus Fossil Camp is a guest farm and campsite in the south of Namibia. The farm hosts its own Quivertree forest and offers the famous Mesosaurus Fossil Tour which is personally guided by Giel or Hendrik Steenkamp.
The Mesosaurus is probably one of the most convincing examples to prove the drifting of continents. The same genus in the same rock formations is to be found in both southern Africa and South America. In southern Africa the fossils can be found in the Whitehill formations, while in South America they are found in the Irats Formations.

Old Post Office Building

In 1908, Gottlieb Redecker, the official builder of the German colonial government’s Works Department, drew up plans for a new post office building in Keetmanshoop. Although Keetmanshoop already had a post office at that stage, it was no longer able to serve its purpose effectively because the village was expanding very quickly with its new status as a railway junction and military and administrative centre for the south. The building was erected by the firm Seebach & Bach and completed in 1910. Like a number of buildings in Keetmanshoop, it is made of granite due to the stone’s durability and low maintenance. Air-dried bricks were only used for the interior. Building wood and corrugated iron were obtained from Cape Town, while the doors and windows were imported from Germany. Building is situated on the corner of Hampie Plichta and Sixth Avenues. It was officially proclaimed a national monument on 2 February 1987.

Johanniter Haus - The old Stone Hospital
The old hospital on Keetmanshoop, built by the Johanniter Order, is celebrating its 100th anniversary. The building today houses the offices of the Ministry of the Environment and Tourism. The site where the old hospital was built was sold by the Crown to the community of Keetmanshoop on 10 June 1912. This follows after the Johanniter Order already requested in 1908 that the German authorities should set up a hospital in this town. The hospital was completed in 1913 at a cost of 120,000 marks. In 1959, the Catholic Church built the St. Joseph nursing home which caters for another 12 patients. The hospitals are used until the new hospital along the main road to South Africa is opened in 1984.

Top 5 attractions of small town Okahandja in Namibia, southern Africa

Okahandja town: top 5 attractions and historical images, Namibia, southern Africa.

#Okahandja #Namibia #Top5Africa

Okahandja:

Timecodes:

0:51 Lutheran Church
1:20 Mbangura Market
2:07 Railway station
2:48 Horse riding club
3:11 Moordkoppie
3:45 Bonus: old Okahandja

The Church of Peace (Friedenskirche Deutsche Evangelische-Lutherische Gemeinde), a Lutheran-Evangelistic church built in 1952, and also the house of Dr. Vedder, one of the oldest in town, are located in old part of Okahandja.

Just south of the post office, on Hoof Street, is a building known as the old stronghold, or the old fort. This was the town's old police station, started in 1894, though now it is empty and falling into disrepair.

Mbangura Market

This craft market is Okahandja’s best known tourist attraction. Woodcarvers from all over, and as far as the Kavango Region of north-eastern Namibia, who practice their ancient skills come here to sell their goods. Since wood is not resistant to the wear and tear of time, wood sculptures survive less well than other forms of art and are therefore an important hidden element in the art history of many cultures. The wood-and-thatch market is situated next to the main road at the town’s entrance and in town center.

Railway station

It serves the town of Okahandja and is part of the TransNamib Railway.

Okahandja is situated on the Windhoek - Swakopmund line, built in 1902 during Imperial Germany's colonial rule of German South West Africa. In 1914 this line was extended to Walvis Bay.

Okahandja is connected to a number of towns in the north of Namibia via the railway junction in Kranzberg, which lies on the Windhoek-Swakopmund-Walvis Bay route, and to the south and east of Namibia via Windhoek.

Moordkoppie

The historical animosity between the Nama and the Herero had its most emphatic expression at the Battle of Moordkoppie (Afrikaans for Murder Hill) on 23 August 1850. During the battle, 700 Herero under the command of chief Katjihene were massacred by Nama forces. Half of the victims were women and children, whose bodies were dismembered for the copper bangles on their arms and legs. The scene of this tragedy was a small rocky hill near the centre of town between the B2 and the railway line, 500 m north of the Gross Barmen turn-off.

Reit Club Okahandja - Horse riding club
In 1909 the club house was built by Dr. Fock, the Mayor of Okahandja, to be his residence. In 1958 it was made into a club house and stable yard called Reit Club Okahandja.

The Reit Club has numerous facilities for the equestrian sport, consisting of 120 stables, paddocks, a club house, a residence, jumping and dressage facilities with a cafe and a large spectator pavilion.

Luderitz Namibia ???????? Kolmanskop, Elizabeth Bay & Diaz Point

Namibia Road Trip continues to Lüderitz. We travelled north, passing the iconic Canon Roadhouse, almost completely deserted, thanks to you know what. Then stopping briefly at the quirky Seeheim Hotel. From there we turned west through Aus, spent some time watching the wild horses of the Namib desert at Garub and then continued through the bleak desert landscape to Luderitz.

Luderitz is quite a bustling town, once a wealthy diamond mining centre, it's now mostly reliant on fishing and tourism. Kolmanskop Ghost Diamond mining town is a place that's maybe unique in the world. Between 1908, when the first diamond was discovered there, until the late 1920's it was a very wealthy town, with electricity before most cities in Europe, a theatre where acts from Europe would perform, a fully equipped hospital and some luxurious mansions. It's all been left for the desert to reclaim though, once the diamonds ran out, everybody left and the town was abandoned.

Elizabeth Bay, on the coast about 30km south of Kolmanskop, lasted an even shorter time. It's a more industrial decay experience, with massive processing plants, tunnels and railway network. Rusting machinery and collapsed buildings tell of a past where greed ruled the day (pretty much like it does nowadays).

Also worth a visit is Diaz Point, where the Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias landed in July 1488. He named the bay Angra Pequena and erected a padrão (stone cross) on the southern peninsula. It's a bleak, windswept place, and you can see why he didn't hang around, but nevertheless it's oozing history and character.

Quiver Tree Forest Namibia Keetmanshoop [4K]

The Quiver Tree Forest in Namibia near Keetmanshoop has been a national monument since 1955. The quiver tree itself can be found in several regions of Namibia, but here is the largest concentration of more than 300 trees. The trees themselves are between 200 and 300 years old and around five meters high.

Besides sunset, we enjoyed the following sunrise here and also tried some night shots. We were very impressed by the trees themselves because of their unique shape. A permit from the farm is required to visit the Quiver Tree Forest, as the forest is on their premises. Conveniently, the farm is also connected to a campsite, where we also stayed overnight. For us, however, it was by far the weakest overnight stay on a campsite in Namibia. However, this was not only due to the campsite itself, but mainly due to the crickets that have claimed the area and the entire campsite for themselves.

It felt like thousands of them, but at least so many that you could hardly take a step without stepping on one (at least in the evening). They actually look harmless (see the video at 0:40), but in bulk they can be pretty intimidating.

Make sure to subscribe that you won't miss the next videos.

Quiver Tree Forest near Keetmanshoop in Namibia, southern Africa

Video of Quiver Tree Forest in southern Namibia, Africa.

#Namibia #QuiverTree #AfricaSafari

The Quiver Tree Forest (Kokerboomwoud in Afrikaans) is a forest and tourist attraction of southern Namibia. It is located about 14 km north-east of Keetmanshoop on the road to Koës, on the Gariganus farm. It comprises about 250 specimens of Aloidendron dichotomum, a species that is also locally known as the quiver tree (Afrikaans: kokerboom) because the San people traditionally used its branches to make quivers. The forest has grown spontaneously; the tallest quiver trees are two to three centuries old. The forest was declared a national monument of Namibia in 1995.

The quiver tree is also known for looking upside down because the leaves look somewhat similar to roots. This tree is associated with a long history of folklore, for instance that it will bring good luck to anybody that worships a tree and nurtures it. Since diamonds have been found in Namibia, people say that if one of these trees is dug up, one will find diamonds where it has grown, but since these trees are blessed nobody wants to dig them up.

Near the forest, there is another tourist attraction, spectacular for its unique geology, the Giant's Playground, a vast pile of large dolerite rocks.

Ecology
The Quiver Tree Forest holds tremendous ecological value within its native landscape. Bright yellow flowers bloom from June to July, when a huge variety of insects, birds, and mammals are drawn to the abundant nectar.

Fauna
The forest is home to rock hyraxes living amongst the rocks.

Other Quiver Tree Forests
Although Aloe dichotoma is common in southern Africa, there are only a small number of natural quiver tree forests, most having been created by humans; one of them is found in the Karoo National Botanical Garden of Worcester, South Africa.

Naming
Known as choje to the indigenous San people, the quiver tree gets its English common name from the San people practice of hollowing out the tubular branches of Aloidendron dichotomum to form quivers for their arrows. The specific epithet dichotomum refers to how the stems repeatedly branch into two (dichotomous branching) as the plant grows. This species was moved to the genus Aloidendron as Aloidendron dichotomum in 2013.

Something that makes this tree very interesting as well, is the fact that it looks like they grow upside down. This is because of the leaves that look very much like roots. It is also believed that these trees have a ‘holy’ status in some local religions.

These unusual-looking trees can reach heights anywhere between three and nine metres and only bloom once they are between 20 and 30 years old. Quiver trees are endemic to the Nama Karoo in the south of Namibia and along the Great Escarpment in the west.

A vertical stem protects the tree from direct sunlight during the hottest hours of the day and the yellowish bark and thin layer of white powder on the branches reflect most of the sunlight away from the tree.

The rough and scaly bark is thought to be an additional and remarkable internal cooling adaptation to cope with the harsh surroundings.

Quiver trees were declared to be endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) in 2010.

This is mostly due to climate change and the increasing heat and decreasing rainfall in southern Namibia. The trees grow in generations, with each generation potentially reaching between 100 and 120 years.

Namibia Travel Guide - Experience Marvelous Namibia

Namibia Travel Guide - Experience Marvelous Namibia

Namibia is in Southern Africa, bordering South Africa, Botswana, Angola, Zambia and the Atlantic Ocean. Namibia boasts remarkable natural attractions such as the Namib desert, the Fish River Canyon Park, Etosha National Park and the Kalahari desert. Its people speak nine different languages, including some of the Khoisan languages which include the 'clicks' that present an enigma to most native English-speakers. Namibia produces some of the world's highest quality diamonds.

Few countries in Africa can match Namibia's sheer natural beauty. The country's name derives from its (and the world's) oldest desert, the Namib, and there are few more stirring desert realms on the planet, from the sand sea and perfect dead-tree valleys at Sossusvlei to the otherworldliness of sand dunes plunging down to the sea at Sandwich Harbour and the Skeleton Coast. Inland, running through the heart of the country, a spine of mountains creates glorious scenery – the Naukluft Mountains, the Brandberg, Spitzkoppe, Damaraland and the jaw-dropping Fish River Canyon. With rivers and wetlands in the Caprivi Strip and the endless gold-grass plains of the Kalahari, it's difficult to think of an iconic African landscape that Namibia doesn't possess.

Make no mistake: Namibia is one of Southern Africa's best places to watch wildlife, at least in the country's north. Etosha National Park belongs in the elite wildlife-watching destinations – big cats, elephants, black rhinos and plains game in abundance. Two other areas are emerging as complements to Etosha. Damaraland is a wonderful place to see desert-adapted elephants and lions, and also happens to host Africa's largest population of free-ranging rhinos – rhino tracking is a real highlight here. Over in the Caprivi Strip, the wildlife is returning, with Bwabwata and Nkasa Rupara becoming wonderfully rich parks to explore. This being Namibia, there are private reserves (Okonjima and Erindi premier among them) as well as game farms that serve as havens for rescued wildlife.

Travel Vlog: Windhoek, Quiver Tree Forest & Crossing Ariamsvlei Border Post | ???????? Tour de Nam EP10

Welcome to Windhoek, capital of Namibia. In this video, we show you our beautiful little cottage where we stay for 1 night, right here in the middle of Windhoek. Then, we are having dinner at the famous Joe's Beerhouse. The next morning, we hit the long, straight tar road to the Quiver Tree Forest, which was mind-blowing. We then spent our last night in Namibia here at Grunau Chalets in the middle of nowhere, which spoiled us with the most incredible sunset. The last morning, we jumped on the road again to exit Namibia at the Ariamsvlei border crossing. Watch this video to see exactly where you need to go and what you need to exit Namibia. Our hearts are heavy and will definitely miss this spectacular country!
