A road trip in the Mountains of Namaqualand, Northern Cape, South Africa from small town Garies to Springbok via Studer's Pass during spring flower season.
Namaqualand - Namaqualand is a harsh, relentless, arid wilderness. Surface water is practically non-existent and subterranean water is brackish and hard to find. And here in this desert, one of the most remarkable wonders of nature occurs. In the spring, from mid-July to the end of September the spring flowers give the world its most beautiful botanical spectacle.
Studer's Pass is a serious altitude gaining gravel pass located between Garies and the small settlements of Leliesfontein and Paulshoek in Namaqualand. The pass is the gateway to some of the finest wild-flower displays and forms part of a circular route incorporating the best of Namaqualand. It is a pure and backward part of South Africa, mainly untouched by the heavy hand of progress.

Northern Cape - South Africa

The province is situated to the south of the powerful Orange River which provides the province with its good agricultural system. The central areas of the Northern Cape are generally flat and combined with salt pans. The Karoo rocks are sprinkled with kimberlite providing the province with its most precious held diamonds.
Sutherland, a popular if bitterly cold winter town is popular with stargazers as it boasts the southern hemisphere’s largest astronomical observatory, the sponsored Southern African Large Telescope. Many keen budding and hobby astrologers flock to Sutherland to see the stars from clear skies.
The Northern Cape is home to many national parks and conservation areas including the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (an international park shared with Botswana), Ai-Ais-Richtersveld Transfrontier Conservation Park and Augrabies Falls National Park. Wonderlands of flora, fauna and birdlife.
A great deal of the Northern Cape lies in the dry Nama-Karoo Biome which is home to several interesting plants such as the elephant’s trunk tree; including a variety of succulents. The province is famous for its spectacular array of florals in spring, which attracts thousands of tourists from far and wide each year to the Namaqualand region.
The Northern Cape is a thriving agricultural region especially in the Orange River Valley. A variety of fruit is cultivated in Upington and the Kakamas while the Karoo area depends on sheep farming.
Things to do and see in the Northern Cape
The vast terrain of the Northern Cape lends itself to 4x4’ing motor-biking and other off-road activities. The Orange River is at its most impressive at Augrabies Falls when the river cascades over a granite plateau approximately 191m down into a 43m pool – a spectacular sight to behold. The Northern Cape has a history immersed in San rock art with cave sites including Wonderwerk Cave near Kuruman. An area favoured by keen archaeologists the site dates back nearly a million years.

Every year in springtime the Namaqualand bursts into bloom with its amazing displays of wild flowers. Diamonds were first discovered in this area in the 19th century which sparked mass diggings and diamond-fever for many years. All this manic behaviour led to what is now known as the Big Hole, the largest artificial construction found in the world. This fantastic display can be viewed from a viewing platform at the Kimberley Mine Museum, a fascinating open-air museum.

Kathu - Driving around town - Northern Cape, South Africa
I recently travelled to a number of towns in the Northern Cape. One of my stops was in the town of Kathu. Kathu is a mining town situated some 6h45min (579km) from Johannesburg. The town has a major iron ore industry, with one of biggest iron ore mines globally. It's a beatiful clean looking town. The town also has a golf course, sports and recreation facilities, game reserve as well the Kathu Forest.

Pella is a small village between Springbok and Pofadder. It was established in 1849 by missionary couple David and Susan Nellmapius, who also built Pella Church. The church has been dubbed 'the cathedral of Bushmanland' due to its huge size. It is known for date palms that still exist today. It is only 18km off the highway and well worth the trip.
Pofadder Inn is a stunningly beautiful hotel set in a small town with historic buildings and lots of character. The scenery surrounding it is equally gorgeous. Flat open roads where you can see forever.
At Kakamas Hotel you can explore distilleries and wineries along the Orange River. There are few places on earth that are more beautiful than the Northern Cape. Perhaps its most prized attraction is Augrabies Falls National Park – a sprawling reserve of sandstone outcroppings set against some of the country’s most picturesque scenery including the Augrabies Water Falls. You have to stop at the Pienk Padstal in Kakamas.
Kathu Inn is a comfortable home away from home. It has an excellent reputation for good service and good food. If you are travelling on Route N14 and need to stop over it would be worth stopping here to refresh yourself before moving on.

Karon is a resort town on the west coast of Thailand’s Phuket Island. It’s known for Karon Beach, a long stretch of white sand. Wat Suwan Khirikhet is a Buddhist temple guarded by 2 large snake statues.
The temple complex hosts the twice-weekly Karon Temple Market, which sells sarongs, jewelry, and street food. To the southeast, the towering white marble Big Buddha statue has panoramic views over the island.
