KASTORIA | GREECE | A Lakeside Mountain Town Known as the City of Fur Traders
Visiting Kastoria, a picturesque town in northern Greece that sits next to a pretty lake and tucked away in the mountains of western Macedonia.
Kastoria has a rich history as a hub for the fur trade, which is so central to this town's existence that it is actually known as The City of Fur Traders.
Since the heyday of the fur trade has long past, the city is no longer as wealthy as it once was, but evidence of the fur trade is still very obvious as there are fur shops all around. That and tourism, primarily domestic winter tourism, are the main drivers of the local economy today.
Let's take a walk around Kastoria to see what it has to offer, and eat some good local food while we're at it.

Today we will visit Kastoria! Kastoria is a city in northern Greece in the region of Western Macedonia, It is the capital of Kastoria regional unit, in the geographic region of Macedonia. It is situated on the western shore of Lake Orestiada, in a valley surrounded by limestone mountains.
lake Orestiada, is one of the most beautiful lakes of Greece, The area it cover is more than 28 square kilometres, it is 630 metres above sea level and the maximum depth is 10 metres, with average 4,5 metres.The city of Kastoria is built between the mountains Grammos and Vitsi at an altitude of 700 meters. The population of the city is 16393 and is among the most popular winter destinations in Greece. The city of Kastoria is surrounded by the lake Orestiada and gives the feeling of an island.
The city of Kastoria got its name from the word Kastoras, which in Greek means beaver, because the economy of the city is based on fur trade even before the 14th century.
Fur production is the most important economic activity for Kastoria. Since the Byzantine period, the art and trade of fur and its products developed and evolved, making Kastoria today a center of global interest in fur trade and the only processing center in Europe.

Orestiada Lake – Kastoria | Greece [4K]
Orestiada lake or lake of Kastoria is a lake in the Kastoria regional unit of Macedonia, northwestern Greece. Sitting at an altitude of 630 metres, the lake covers an area of 28 square kilometres.
Nine rivulets flow into the lake, and it drains into the Haliacmon river. Its depth varies from 9 to 10 metres. The Orestida was formed about 10 million years ago. The Kastoria Peninsula, with the town of Kastoria, divides the lake into two parts, the larger to the north and the smaller to the south.
The lake takes its name from the Oreiades. Lakeside attractions include, apart from the Byzantine architectural heritage of the town, an 11th-century Byzantine monastery of Panagia Mavriotissa and the reconstructed prehistoric settlement of Dispilio, where the Dispilio Tablet was retrieved from the lake in 1992. The lake is known to freeze in winters.
