Kasserine Pass WW2, Thelepte & Cillium: World War II, Archaeology & Insurgency in Tunisia's West
Today we head to Kasserine Governorate in the west of Tunisia to visit the location of the Battle of Kasserine Pass. Here, in February 1943, was the first major engagement between US and Axis troops in North Africa in World War II. Rommel's Afrika Korps killed over 3,000 American troops, leading to George S. Patton replacing Major General Lloyd Fredendall as Commanding General of the US II Corps. After seeing the war memorial, we head past Jebel Chambi National Park, then Thelepte Airbase, before arriving at the archaeological site of Thélepte. We end the day investigating the Ancient Roman remains of Cillium in Kasserine town itself, including the amazing Mausoleum of the Flavii.
SAFETY NOTE TO VIEWERS: There is an ongoing insurgency in Kasserine Governorate, concentrated in the mountainous regions around Jebel Chambi, Jebel Mghilla and Jebel Salloum (which are all very close to the town of Kasserine). I discuss this in the video. Be sure to check travel advisories before heading to this part of Tunisia, and take appropriate safety precautions.

Sbeïtla Archaeological Site, Tunisia (is it better than Dougga?)
Today we tour the archaeological site of Sbeïtla (sometimes spelled Subaytilah or Sufetula), which is in Kasserine Governorate, central Tunisia. This place was a thriving Roman settlement in the first century AD, under the reign of Emperor Vespasian, made wealthy by the ancient olive oil industry. This is one of the most impressive Roman archaeological sites in the whole country, and is home to the best preserved Roman forum in all of Tunisia (if not the world). If you enjoyed visiting the ruins of Dougga or Bulla Regia or Carthage, then you will love Sbeïtla!

Tunisia Road Trip! Driving west: Tunis to El Kef (Tunisia Travel VLOG)
Life in Tunisia is pretty great! Join me in the latest Tunisia travel VLOG as I head off overlanding to explore Kef Governorate, in the north-west of the country, by the border with Algeria. Today we check out the vista at Mellegue Dam, the Ancient Roman arch at Musti (Mustis) and have a few technical issues at a motorway toll booth! Finally we arrive at Dar Sidi Abdallah, which will be the base from which we explore the governorate in later videos. Don't worry, I will also do a separate video on the beautiful facilities at Dar Sidi Abdallah, which I recommend!

We then climb up Jugurtha's Table, a mesa that gives incredible views of the Ez-Zghalma plain in Kef Governorate. You can even see into Algeria from the top! We end the adventure by heading to Haïdra, right on the Algerian border, which used to be called Ammaedara, one of the oldest Roman cities in Africa. I hope this video encourages travel to Tunisia!

SITE ARCHÉOLOGIQUE DE SBEÏTLA - TUNISIE
Site archéologique de Sbeïtla - Tunisie
Cordonnées GPS: 35.24177, 9.11805
Le site archéologique de Sbeïtla est situé au centre de la Tunisie et l'on y retrouve les temples des forums romains les mieux conservés d'Afrique du Nord.
Nous sommes d'abord passé en autobus devant l'Arc de Dioclétien qui marquait jadis l'entrée de Sbeïtla.
Ce site est très grand. Il couvre une vingtaine d'hectares, mais la ville en occupait probablement le double. Nous n'en avons visité qu'une infime partie.
Les monuments sont nombreux et ceux que nous avons visité datent de l'époque romaine.
Nous avons débuté notre randonnée dans l'allée qui mène à l'entrée du forum. Celle-ci est bordée de murs de pierre ainsi que de nombreuses colonnes. De jolies fleurs viennent agrémenter le paysage.
Nous arrivons ainsi devant l'Arc d'Antonin qui donne accès au forum. A l'époque romaine, c'était la place centrale de la ville. C'est à cet endroit que se prenaient les décisions politiques et administratives de la ville.
En pénétrant dans l'enceinte du forum, le capitole nous apparaît dans toute sa splendeur. Il est formé de trois temples mitoyens qui célèbre chacun une divinité: Minerve, Jupiter ainsi que Junon.
Nous nous sommes également promenés sur le site pour découvrir d'autres attraits tels que de grandes thermes publics, des fortins ainsi que les vestiges d'une huilerie..
A certains endroits, le sol est recouvert de superbes mosaïques qui sont encore aujourd'hui très bien conservées.
Il y a également un théâtre dont les gradins ont été restaurés en 2010. Cependant, nous ne l'avons pas visité.

Ancient Carthage ~ Tunisia
Carthage sits on the tip of Tunisia on the Mediterranean sea just across from Italy. It was founded in the 9th century BC. It was the capital of the Carthaginian civilization.The most famous Carthaginian was the great general Hannibal, who fought the Romans in the 2nd century BC during the second Punic war. Hannibal crossed Spain, over the Alps to attack the Romans in Italy with African elephants. He won numerous battles against the Romans and inflicted heavy losses on them.
The city was destroyed in 146 BC during the 3rd Punic war and turned into Roman Carthage. General Patton also insisted on visiting here during his campaign to drive the Nazis out of North Africa during WWII.
