Karlsruhe, Germany 2022 - A Walking Tour Around this German City

Karlsruhe is the second largest city in the German state of Baden-Württemberg (after Stuttgart). This walk in Karlsruhe is on a public holiday so it's fairly quiet in the centre.

We walk along the Karlsstraße and head to the Karlsruhe palace which is one of the few touristic sights in this industrial city. There in the palace garden people enjoy their holiday. We return through the fan shaped layout of the park and head back towards the inner city.

We pass the Rondellplatz, Friedrichsplatz among others. A few restaurants and cafés are open as we end this short walk near St. Stephen's Square.

Places to see in ( Karlsruhe - Germany )

Places to see in ( Karlsruhe - Germany )

Karlsruhe is a city in southwestern Germany. Housed in a former weapons factory, the vast ZKM Center for Art and Media includes video, audio and interactive installations. In the city center, the tower of the 18th-century Karlsruhe Palace offers views of Karlsruhe's fan-shaped layout. The palace houses the Baden State Museum, with exhibits spanning prehistory to the present.

When planning this radial city in 1715, the margraves of Baden placed a mighty baroque palace smack in the middle – an urban layout so impressive it became the blueprint for Washington, DC.
Laid-back and cultured, Karlsruhe grows on you the longer you linger, with its rambling parks and museums crammed with futuristic gizmos and French Impressionist paintings. The suburbs dotted with art nouveau townhouses are a reminder that France is just 15km away. Some 43,000 students keep the beer cheap and the vibe upbeat in the pubs, and the wheels of innovation in culture and technology turning.

The city was founded in 1715 by margrave Karl Wilhelm von Baden. The city was laid out on the drawing board. It consists of a central circle, containing the castle, and streets running towards the castle as radial spokes. This pattern is still visible today. Due to the fan-like layout, Karlsruhe is known as the fan city (Fächerstadt).

The Rhine valley, where Karlsruhe is located, is the warmest part of Germany because it is only about 115 m above sea level and there are mountains in the east (black forest) and west (vogesen). Therefore, Karlsruhe has more sunny days than many other parts of Germany.

There isn't a lot of tourist traffic to Karlsruhe. Tourists generally tend to gravitate towards the cities of Heidelberg (50km to the north) and Freiburg (100km to the south), with their well-preserved old towns. It's a shame though, as Karlsruhe's radial layout is one of the best early examples of New Urbanism, and is really a joy to explore. Maybe that's a benefit to travelers who do venture there, as the number of visitors is low enough to be sort of a novelty for the locals. Karlsruhe is home to the two highest federal courts of Germany, the Bundesverfassungsgericht (Federal constitutional court) and the Bundesgerichtshof (Supreme federal court). Because of this and other administrative facilities, Karlsruhe has a reputation as a city of civil servants.

A lot to see in Karlsruhe is along Kaiserstrasse. Because all the streets radiate outward, the Marktplatz is a great place to start a walking tour of the city. If you go up or down Kaiserstrasse, you will find a great variety of shops and restaurants on both sides of the streets.

Karlsruhe Innenstadt | Walking in Karlsruhe, Germany | 4K 60fps

Karlsruhe Innenstadt | Walking in Karlsruhe, Germany | 4K 60fps

Hi everyone, feel free to join me walking in KArlsruhe Innenstadt in Germany. Karlsruhe is the third-largest city of the German state (Land) of Baden-Württemberg after its capital Stuttgart and Mannheim, and the 22nd-largest city in the nation, with 308,436 inhabitants.[6] It is also a former capital of Baden, a historic region named after Hohenbaden Castle in the city of Baden-Baden. Located on the right bank of the Rhine near the French border, between the Mannheim/Ludwigshafen conurbation to the north and Strasbourg/Kehl to the south, Karlsruhe is Germany's legal center, being home to the Federal Constitutional Court (Bundesverfassungsgericht), the Federal Court of Justice (Bundesgerichtshof) and the Public Prosecutor General of the Federal Court of Justice (Generalbundesanwalt beim Bundesgerichtshof).

Karlsruhe was the capital of the Margraviate of Baden-Durlach (Durlach: 1565–1718; Karlsruhe: 1718–1771), the Margraviate of Baden (1771–1803), the Electorate of Baden (1803–1806), the Grand Duchy of Baden (1806–1918), and the Republic of Baden (1918–1945). Its most remarkable building is Karlsruhe Palace, which was built in 1715. There are nine institutions of higher education in the city, most notably the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Karlsruher Institut für Technologie). Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport (Flughafen Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden) is the second-busiest airport of Baden-Württemberg after Stuttgart Airport, and the 17th-busiest airport of Germany.

The Marktplatz has a stone pyramid marking the grave of the city's founder. Built in 1825, it is the emblem of Karlsruhe. The city is nicknamed the fan city (die Fächerstadt) because of its design layout, with straight streets radiating fan-like from the Palace.

The Karlsruhe Palace (Schloss) is an interesting piece of architecture; the adjacent Schlossgarten includes the Botanical Garden with a palm, cactus and orchid house, and walking paths through the woods to the north.

Recorded - June 2023
Temperature - sunny 28°C

KARLSRUHE PALACE

Short visit to the Karlsruhe's palace which was built between 1715 and 1718. For almost 200 years it served as the residence and seat of government of the margraves, the electoral princes and grand dukes of Baden. Joint me in my visit to this beautiful palace and it's museum.
