Etusis Lodge:

#EtusisLodgeErongo #KaribibNamibia #SouthernAfrica

In the heart of the Etusis Marble Mountains, you will find one of Namibia’s most fascinating landscapes, where you can get close to the wild animals in open 4×4 vehicles, on horseback or on foot.

Volker and Susanne Ledermann had a dream: to preserve a piece of original Africa. In 1993 they fulfilled this on the back then agricultural farm Etusis. The Etusis Nature and Game Reserve was gradually expanded to its 21,000 hectares today.
Other than most wildlife reserves in Namibia, we consciously avoid fences, which suppress the natural migrations of the wild: zebras, antelopes, leopards and many other animals have complete freedom to roam on Etusis.

The Etusis Lodge was built a little later in the heart of the reserve – with a gentle ecologically sustainable tourism concept, in which mankind understands herself as a guest. This has created jobs for the local community and, last but not least, we are trying to give each of our guests an impression of the uniqueness of Namibian nature and the necessity to preserve it.

Three things make the visit to Etusis unique:

One of the most spectacular landscapes of Namibia with the Etusis marble mountains, the Otjipatera mountain range, the Etusis waterfall and the Etusis plain.
The opportunity to experience nature in a special way – whether in open Safari vehicles, on horseback or on hikes.
You do not only come as guests but become part of the Etusis life. Whether eating together at the long table on the terrace or talking at the evening campfire about the experiences of the day while the Zebras come to drink at the waterhole just across the dry riverbed.

The Etusis Lodge and Horseriding is located halfway between Windhoek and Swakopmund, nestled in a more than 21,000 hectares, mountainous wildlife sanctuary.

Etusis – in English “the place where you can dive deep” is named after the deep lake by the waterfall and is both historically and scenically worth a trip. But we also invite you to dive deeply into a true African Nature experience.

Luderitz Namibia ???????? Kolmanskop, Elizabeth Bay & Diaz Point

Namibia Road Trip continues to Lüderitz. We travelled north, passing the iconic Canon Roadhouse, almost completely deserted, thanks to you know what. Then stopping briefly at the quirky Seeheim Hotel. From there we turned west through Aus, spent some time watching the wild horses of the Namib desert at Garub and then continued through the bleak desert landscape to Luderitz.

Luderitz is quite a bustling town, once a wealthy diamond mining centre, it's now mostly reliant on fishing and tourism. Kolmanskop Ghost Diamond mining town is a place that's maybe unique in the world. Between 1908, when the first diamond was discovered there, until the late 1920's it was a very wealthy town, with electricity before most cities in Europe, a theatre where acts from Europe would perform, a fully equipped hospital and some luxurious mansions. It's all been left for the desert to reclaim though, once the diamonds ran out, everybody left and the town was abandoned.

Elizabeth Bay, on the coast about 30km south of Kolmanskop, lasted an even shorter time. It's a more industrial decay experience, with massive processing plants, tunnels and railway network. Rusting machinery and collapsed buildings tell of a past where greed ruled the day (pretty much like it does nowadays).

Also worth a visit is Diaz Point, where the Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias landed in July 1488. He named the bay Angra Pequena and erected a padrão (stone cross) on the southern peninsula. It's a bleak, windswept place, and you can see why he didn't hang around, but nevertheless it's oozing history and character.

EXPLORING USAKOS TOWN IN ERONGO REGION OF CENTRAL NAMIBIA SOUTHERN AFRICA

Usakos is the last town on B2 highway from Windhoek to the west coast of Namibia and resort town of Swakopmund and Walvis Bay deep sea harbor.

#Usakos #Namibia #SouthernAfrica

Usakos:

Usakos (Damara: grab the heel, Otjiherero name: Okanduu) is a city on the banks of river Khan, 140 kilometres north-east of Swakopmund in the Erongo Region of Namibia. It is located on the B2 (Trans-Kalahari Highway), the main road between the Walvis Bay and Johannesburg. The town has 3,000 inhabitants and owns 58 square kilometres of land. Usakos was scheduled to be downgraded to town status before November 2010.

The settlement was founded in 1900 as a watering station for locomotives when railway construction workers from Otavi Minen- und Eisenbahngesellschaft (Otavi Mining and Railway Company) (OMEG) arrived here on their way from Swakopmund to Tsumeb. Surrounded by mountains, Usakos is quite picturesque. Certain spots around the town show the longest uninterrupted horizon in the world. It is the closest town to the Spitzkoppe, often referred to as the Matterhorn of Namibia.

Development and infrastructure
Usakos is the junction of the branch railways to Tsumeb and the Angolan border, Outjo and Grootfontein from the line to Windhoek.

Politics
Local authority results, 2010
In the 2010 local authority election, a total of 1,029 votes were cast in the city. SWAPO won with approximately 47% of the vote. Of the three other parties seeking votes in the election, UDF received approximately 31% of the vote, followed by RDP (17%) and COD (4%).

Notable residents
Usakos is the hometown of prominent politicians Alpheus !Naruseb and Tsudao Gurirab. Michael Goreseb represented the town politically as well.
The first town in the east of the Namib Desert on the main B2 road from Swakopmund, Usakos lies on the southern bank of the Khan River, nestled in the last hills before the Namib, at the edge of a vast expanse of gravel plains. The town originally developed around the railway workshops which were built to service the narrow-gauge Otavi line, completed in 1906. Unit 1960, the town prospered. Nowadays the town's main role is one of service centre to vehicles plying their way to and from Swakopmund / Walvis Bay and Windhoek. As a reminder of the town's heyday, Locomotive No. 40 stands in front of the railway station, one of three Henschel steam trains built in Germany for her colony's narrow-gauge railway.

Driving through Omaruru town in March 2021, central Namibia, southern Africa

Video about small beautiful town Omaruru, south of Etosha National Park. Old historical buildings, parks and dry Omaruru River.

#Omaruru #Namibia #SouthernAfrica

Omaruru:

Franke's Tower in Omaruru:

Omaruru is a city and constituency in the Erongo Region in central Namibia. The town has 4,800 inhabitants and occupies 350 square kilometres of land. The town is situated near the Erongo Mountains, on the usually dry Omaruru River. It is located on the main paved road from Swakopmund to Otjiwarongo. The name in the local Otjiherero language means 'bitter milk'.

Omaruru is known for its annual festival where the Herero people commemorate their past local chiefs, its winery, and for the dinosaur footprints at nearby Otjihaenamparero.

Omaruru was established in 1863 by Wilhelm Zeraua, the first chief of the White Flag clan of the OvaHerero people. In 1871, Anders Ohlsson and Axel Eriksson established a brewery at Omaruru. Eriksson had also established a trading post, which flourished and by 1878 he employed about forty whites. Eriksson's business was based upon long-distance trading between southern Angola and Cape Colony, which necessitated the establishment of regional trade routes.

The town grew around a mission built in 1872 by Gottlieb Viehe, now a museum, and was attacked in 1904 during the Herero Wars. Franke Tower was later erected to commemorate the relief by Hauptmann Victor Franke's troops of the local garrison that was beleaguered by Herero tribesmen who had risen against the German colonial presence.

Legacy of von Trotha
The descendants of Lothar von Trotha and the von Trotha family travelled to Omaruru in October 2007 by invitation of the royal Herero chiefs and publicly apologised for his role in the Herero genocide. Member of the family Wolf-Thilo von Trotha: We, the von Trotha family, are deeply ashamed of the terrible events that took place 100 years ago. Human rights were grossly abused that time.

Dutch Reformed Church
Omaruru Reformed Church, the local congregation of the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa (NGK) was separated from that in Otjiwarongo on March 1, 1941, and included Omaruru, Karibib, Usakos, Kalkfeld, Swakopmund, and Walvis Bay as ward centers. Over the years, six congregations were in turn spun off from the Omaruru one, but the overall numbers were usually sparse given the predominantly German demographics of the local white population.

Omaruru is one of few Namibian towns where the political opposition is relatively strong. Namibia's ruling party SWAPO won the 2010 local authority election with 847 votes, followed by the Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) with 369 votes, the United Democratic Front (UDF) with 308 votes, and National Unity Democratic Organisation (NUDO) with 107 votes.SWAPO also was the strongest party in the 2015 local authority elections, winning four seats in the town council and gaining 1117 votes. The UDF gained two seats (590 votes), and the Democratic Turnhalle Alliance (DTA) obtained one (291 votes).

In the 2020 local authority election SWAPO won again over each individual opposition party but lost the majority of seats in the city council. SWAPO obtained 642 votes and gained two seats. One seat each went to the Popular Democratic Movement (PDM, the new name of the DTA since 2017) with 403 votes, the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC, newly formed in August 2020) with 305 votes, the local Omaruru Community Development Organisation with 297 votes, the UDF with 230 votes, and NUDO with 182 votes.

Transport and infrastructure
Omaruru is the only Namibian town not connected to the NamWater pipeline network. It receives its water from boreholes along the Omaruru River which are managed by the municipality.

Omaruru Railway Station connects the town to the Trans-Namib railway network.

DRIVING THROUGH KARIBIB TOWN ERONGO REGION IN CENTRAL NAMIBIA SOUTHERN AFRICA

Karibib is a small town located half way between Windhoek and Atlantic Coast of Namibia, a video of town and some historical photos.

#KaribibTown #ErongoRegionNamibia #SouthernAfrica

Karibib:

The small town Karibib is located almost exactly midway between Windhoek and Swakopmund on B2 highway. The town renowned for the high quality marble (considered to be the hardest in the world) mined near the town. It was used in various government buildings in Namibia, Parliament buildings in Cape Town and during the construction of Frankfurt International airport. The only gold mine in the country, Navachab, is also located in the vicinity of Karibib, where gold was discovered in 1984. Below is short information on some historical buildings in the town.

Karibib was a waterhole known to the Herero under the name Otjandjomboimwe. Expecting business opportunities arising from the railway construction work between Swakopmund and Windhoek, Eduard Hälbich, merchant at Otjimbingwe, bought the waterhole and 20,000 hectares of land surrounding it from Herero headman Zacharias Zeraua. The deal was finalised on 7 January 1895, the purchase price was 22,500 marks, two ox wagons, and 742 pounds 5 shillings that Zeraua had incurred in debts in Hälbich's shop in Otjimbingwe.

Karibib began to grow quickly when on 30 May 1900 the railway construction reached the newly founded place. 1 June 1900 marks the day of the official foundation of Karibib at the occasion of the first train arriving from Swakopmund. The railway station was built, a medical practice, storage facilities, a prison, and living quarters were erected, and the population rose to 274. This development disadvantaged the settlement of Otjimbingwe; ox wagons that before would travel via Otjimbingwe on the Alter Baiweg (Old bay road) would now take the route through Karibib.

In 1904 the place became again important as a railway hub for ferrying troops in the Herero and Namaqua War. Its status was upgraded to that of a county, and governance was extended to include Omaruru. At the end of the war in 1907, Karibib counted 316 white residents, and the remaining Herero land was expropriated and offered to white farmers. Karibib was declared a municipality in 1909, and Eduard Hälbich was its mayor.

Historic Buildings
Roesemann Building (1900), one of Karibib's first structures
One of Karibib's oldest buildings is the Roesemannhaus (Roesemann's house), erected 1900 shortly after the town was founded. Other historic structures are the Wollhaus (Wool house), erected in 1900 from local marble, the Railway station building (1901), the Kaiserbrunnen (Emperor fountain, 1906-1908), and the Christ Church (1910).

Swakopmund is located in the Namib Desert and boasts to be an adventure centre of Namibia. The town also has plenty of places of interest and sights in and near it as well as offers a lot of tours and adventure activities run by local tour operators.

Swakopmund is a beach resort and an example of German colonial architecture. It was founded in 1892 as the main harbour for German South West Africa. As of the 1970s, German influences remained evident, including German street names, a German daily newspaper, and the German language being spoken by some residents, prompting The New York Times to describe it as more German than Germany. A 2008 New York Times article describes the town as having the dislocating feel of a Baltic Sea resort set in the tropics.

Prominent colonial-time vintage buildings in Swakopmund include the Altes Gefängnis, a prison designed by Heinrich Bause in 1909. The Woermann Haus, built in 1906 with a prominent tower (Damara tower), is now a public library, Kaserne, Prinzessin Rupprecht Residenz - now a small B&B establishment, Hohenzollern House, Swakopmund Hotel (1900s-built railway station), 1905 Hansa Hotel, 1899 Fachwerk Biergarten, Villa Wille, German school, Otavi Bahnhof building, a Lutheran Church and many other fine buildings.

Other attractions in Swakopmund include a Swakopmund Museum, the National Marine Aquarium, Crystal Gallery, and spectacular sand dunes near Langstrand south of the Swakop River. Outside the city, the Rossmund Desert Golf Course is one of only five all-grass desert golf courses in the world. Nearby is a farm that offers camel rides to tourists and the Martin Luther steam locomotive, dating from 1896 and abandoned in the desert due to breakdown.

The 31 camping sites are partly located at the waterfront, partly in the bush and are suitable for big/small tents as well as cars with roof tents, campers and caravans.
Camping areas are all equipped with BBQ facilities, a drinkable water point and electricity. Toilets and showers are in the adjacent ablution blocks with hot water. Some campsites have their own toilet and shower.

Boat Rides
Smaller groups of up to 6 people can explore Lake Oanob from a speed boat. The lake is well-stocked with fish, which in turn attract a variety of water birds.
Note: Since the lake has many hidden rocks, the boat ride is only possible with our driver.

Hire a canoe to have some fun on the water or to go and find the many different species of birds.
Aqua-Cycling

Fish Eagle Cruise
The floating pontoon has bar, toilet and music facilities on board. We can accommodate between 30 - 50 adults. Our restaurant is happy to do the catering on the boat for you.
Note: It is not allowed to bring your own drinks and food on board! The boat will depart on the agreed time; any late departure will shorten the trip!
Giraffe Pool Bar
Relax and divert yourself at the heated Giraffe Pool Bar. Ask for the opening days and times at the restaurant: 062 523647.
