Top 5 attractions in and around Keetmanshoop, Namibia, southern Africa

Adlerdenkmal: The “Eagle Monument” in Keetmanshoop commemorates the German soldiers who were killed in the Herero and Nama wars in 1897, 1903 and 1906-1907 respectively. It is shaped in the form of an obelisk and topped with the German Imperial eagle in bronze. Another memorial at the same site commemorates those who fell during the course of WWII. The latter, however, is not part of the national monument. The monument and bandstand are situated in the center of Keetmanshoop in the little park adjacent to the Post Office in Keetmanshoop, the capital of the south of Namibia.

Keetmanshoop railway station was erected in 1908, when the territory was colonised by Imperial Germany. It is part of the TransNamib Railway, and is located along the Windhoek to Upington line that was inaugurated in 1915 and connects Namibia with South Africa. Keetmanshoop also has a junction to Seeheim and Aus, completed in 1908. The station was rebuilt in 1928 after old building was damaged by fire.

Mesosaurus Fossil Camp is a guest farm and campsite in the south of Namibia. The farm hosts its own Quivertree forest and offers the famous Mesosaurus Fossil Tour which is personally guided by Giel or Hendrik Steenkamp.
The Mesosaurus is probably one of the most convincing examples to prove the drifting of continents. The same genus in the same rock formations is to be found in both southern Africa and South America. In southern Africa the fossils can be found in the Whitehill formations, while in South America they are found in the Irats Formations.

Old Post Office Building

In 1908, Gottlieb Redecker, the official builder of the German colonial government’s Works Department, drew up plans for a new post office building in Keetmanshoop. Although Keetmanshoop already had a post office at that stage, it was no longer able to serve its purpose effectively because the village was expanding very quickly with its new status as a railway junction and military and administrative centre for the south. The building was erected by the firm Seebach & Bach and completed in 1910. Like a number of buildings in Keetmanshoop, it is made of granite due to the stone’s durability and low maintenance. Air-dried bricks were only used for the interior. Building wood and corrugated iron were obtained from Cape Town, while the doors and windows were imported from Germany. Building is situated on the corner of Hampie Plichta and Sixth Avenues. It was officially proclaimed a national monument on 2 February 1987.

Johanniter Haus - The old Stone Hospital
The old hospital on Keetmanshoop, built by the Johanniter Order, is celebrating its 100th anniversary. The building today houses the offices of the Ministry of the Environment and Tourism. The site where the old hospital was built was sold by the Crown to the community of Keetmanshoop on 10 June 1912. This follows after the Johanniter Order already requested in 1908 that the German authorities should set up a hospital in this town. The hospital was completed in 1913 at a cost of 120,000 marks. In 1959, the Catholic Church built the St. Joseph nursing home which caters for another 12 patients. The hospitals are used until the new hospital along the main road to South Africa is opened in 1984.

Top 5 National Parks of the Republic of Namibia in southern Africa

Top 5 national parks and reserves in Namibia video, southern Africa.

8:03 Waterberg National Park

The ǀAi-ǀAis/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park is a peace park straddling the border between South Africa and Namibia. It was formed in 2003 by combining the Namibian ǀAi-ǀAis Hot Springs Game Park and the South African Richtersveld National Park. Most of the South African part of the park forms part of the buffer zone of the Richtersveld Cultural and Botanical Landscape World Heritage Site, which measures 5,920 square kilometres. The Fish River Canyon is located in the park, the largest canyon in Africa. A memorandum of understanding was signed on 17 August 2003 by the presidents of South Africa and Namibia, which formalised the establishment of the park. |Ai-|Ais means ‘burning water’, after the hot springs of the same name.

Etosha National Park is a national park in northwestern Namibia and one of the largest national parks in Africa. It was proclaimed a game reserve in March 1907 in Ordinance 88 by the Governor of German South West Africa, Friedrich von Lindequist. It was designated as Wildschutzgebiet in 1958, and was awarded the status of national park in 1967 by an act of parliament of the Republic of South Africa. It spans an area of 22,270 km2 and was named after the large Etosha pan which is almost entirely within the park. With an area of 4,760 km2, the Etosha pan covers 23% of the total area of the national park. The area is home to hundreds of species of mammals, birds and reptiles, including several threatened and endangered species such as the black rhinoceros. Sixty-one black rhinoceros were killed during poaching in Namibia during 2022, 46 of which were killed in Etosha.

The Namib-Naukluft Park is a national park in western Namibia, situated between the coast of the Atlantic Ocean and the edge of the Great Escarpment. It encompasses part of the Namib Desert (considered the world's oldest desert), the Naukluft mountain range, and the lagoon at Sandwich Harbour. The best-known area of the park and one of the main visitor attractions in Namibia is Sossusvlei, a clay pan surrounded by dunes, and Sesriem, a small canyon of the Tsauchab. The desert research station of Gobabeb is situated within the park.

With an overall area of 49,768 km2, the Namib-Naukluft National Park was at the time of its last expansion the largest game park in Africa and the fourth largest in the world. It consists of a strip of land on the Atlantic Ocean, including 1,609 kilometres of sea, that extends roughly 600 kilometres north-to-south from the Swakop River to the B4 road to Lüderitz.

Skeleton Coast National Park is a national park located in northwest Namibia, and has the most inaccessible shores, dotted with shipwrecks. The park was established in 1971 and has a size of 16,845 km2. The park is divided into a northern and southern section, the southern section is open to those with 4 wheel drive vehicles, they are allowed to go up (north) as far as the Ugab River Gate (where a sign with a skull and crossbones warns you to go no further). The northern section can only be reached by a fly-in safari, and the area is off-limits to all vehicles.

FISH RIVER CANYON SCENIC VIEWS KARAS REGION NAMIBIA SOUTHERN AFRICA

Video with scenic views of Fish River Canyon, the second largest in the world, endless panoramas of surrounding savanna in Namibia, southern Africa.

#FishRiverCanyon #Namibia #SouthernAfrica

The Fish River Canyon can be reached driving down south on main road B1, turning to B4 towards Luderitz, turning left on C12 and follow signs. The main attraction of the park is Fish River Canyon Hike.
Due to extreme temperatures (up to 50 degrees in the summer!) open only during winter time.

The canyon, which is 160 kilometres long and up to 550 meters deep, forms part of the conservation area proclaimed a reserve in 1969.
Vegetation. The vegetation in the area has been classified as dwarf shrub savannah. The following trees occur: camel thorn, quiver tree (kokerboom), sweet thorn, buffalo thorn.
Ai-Ais: One of the most famous hot-spring resorts in the country. The name is a Khoekhoen word which can be translated as ''fire water''. The area was discovered in 1850 by local Nama shepherd. During Nama uprising of 1903-07 the spring was used by German military forces as a base camp. They were also using this area in 1915 as a base to recover from wounds during invasion of South African troops.
Later the spring was leased to local entrepreneur and proclaimed a national monument in 1962. In 1969 it became a conservation area. The rest camp was opened in 1971 on 16 March. Severe floods in 1972, 1974 and 1988 caused camp to close down for some time. The Fish River Canyon Conservation area was enlarged in 1987 by addition of state land west of canyon. Renovations to the Ai-Ais Camp were carried out in 1987-88 and again in 2009 and in 2013.

The Fish River Canyon, is located in the south of Namibia. It is the largest canyon in Africa, as well as the second most visited tourist attraction in Namibia.

The Fish River is the longest interior river in Namibia. It cuts deep into the plateau which is today dry, stony and sparsely covered with hardy drought-resistant plants. The river flows intermittently, usually flooding in late summer; the rest of the year it becomes a chain of long narrow pools. At the lower end of the Fish River Canyon, the hot springs resort of Ai-Ais is situated.

Public view points are near Hobas, a camp site 70 km north of Ai-Ais. This part of the canyon is part of the Ai-Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park. The other 90 km of this canyon are privately owned.

The Fish River Canyon Hiking Trail

The Fish River Canyon hiking trail is one of the most popular hiking trails in Southern Africa. The immense scale and rugged terrain has drawn many visitors from all over the world to experience what hiking or trail running the canyon can offer.

Apart from the 2 kilometre descent west of Hobas and some optional short cuts, the trail generally follows 88 kilometres of the Fish River through to Ai-Ais and is usually completed within 5 days. Although there are a number of footpaths through the canyon, the trail is not fixed leaving the hiker to decide where and how long to hike.

There are no amenities on the trail and hikers have to carry all their needs with them. Open fires are not allowed on the trail.

In times of inclement weather, some shelter in a run-down building can be found at the Causeway (27.829°S 17.571°E) but otherwise sleeping is outdoors.

The weather is usually mild and typical temperatures vary between 5 °C and 30 °C with little humidity. Extreme weather, such as flash floods, stormy winds and rain occasionally play havoc during the hiking season.

Northern Namibia - Travel Destination

Strikingly set on the Andoni plains, one kilometre from Etosha National Park’s King Nehale gate is Etosha King Nehale. The lodge effortlessly portrays the shape of an Nguni cattle head, with chalets stunningly furrowed to the north and south, from the central area like a bull’s horns. Upon walking into the reception and curio shop, boma and dining areas, the Oshiwambo ethos is intriguingly evident from colours, fabrics, cutlery, chandelier, table engravings with impactful proverbs and other embellishments.

The chalets are spacious and stylishly adorned with a touch of Oshiwambo cultural ornaments, and each has its own plunge pool, allowing guests to behold boundless horizons of the Andoni plains. – Fit for a king and queen. The lodge hosts 40 rooms and pays homage to the rich cultural heritage of the area.

There is one detail that puts this lodge over the top: It is its private access to a secluded waterhole, Ontalelo Outpost, which is set in the Etosha National Park. This waterhole is reserved for Etosha King Nehale guests allowing them to immerse themselves in the tranquillity of nature and observe the rich diversity of the animal world in this corner of paradise.

To the north, the conservancy is surrounded by the pulsating life of the communal areas of the Oshikoto, Oshana, Ohangwena and Omusati regions. This new Gondwana lodge gives guests the opportunity to combine the natural wonders of Etosha with the cultural vibrancy of the Aawambo people.

Average income in Namibia and the SADC countries is significantly lower than in Europe or North America. With the Gondwana Card we want to enable more people from Namibia and the region at large to travel the country – in order to increase awareness within society of the value of nature and its gentle utilisation for tourism.

NAMIBIA 4x4 Roadtrip | Travel Inspiration

Our Namibia 4x4 Roadtrip took place in 2020! Can you believe that?! Well, that's because we were lucky to travel to Namibia before the COVID-19 outbreak. We traveled around this AMAZING country by 4x4 jeep with roof tent for 16 days! It was a wild 4x4 adventure as we explored Etosha National Park, Waterberg Plateau, Damaraland, Twyfelfontein, the Skeleton Coast, Torra Bay, Spitzkoppe, Walvis Bay, Swakopmund, Sossusvlei, and Deadvlei.

With its wide-open and dream-like landscapes, Namibia is a traveler's paradise. Home to the vast Namib Desert, a wide variety of wildlife, and a wild coastline, it has some of the most spectacular scenery of Africa. It is also one of the few places left in the world where you can drive for hours on the road without seeing anyone (or anything!). With just over 2.2 million inhabitants, Namibia is the 2nd most sparsely populated country in the world. This mix of ingredients is what makes Namibia the perfect 4x4 road trip destination.

We would highly recommend Namibia to anyone who loves adventure travel and unique landscapes! We hope this video inspires you to travel to Namibia.

KLEIN-AUS VISTA - DESERT HORSE INN
The attractive and airy rooms are built in a style indicative of the late century farmhouse and painted a deep, rich sienna that glows alluringly in the late afternoon sunshine. Put up feet on your veranda enjoying Klein-Aus calm, relax at the pool side, designed in a unique horse shoe shape. For the active ones: partake in the scenic drives or explore the numerous mountain-bike and walking trails traversing the rocky hills. En-route you will discover WWI ramparts, and an old Hudson motorcar riddled with bullet holes from an almost-forgotten shoot-out with diamond smugglers, viewpoints with extraordinary vistas, springbok and oryx on the plains and, if lucky, klipspringers poised on the rocky slopes. For a day excursion, visit the wild horses at the Garub waterhole, 20km to the West, and the old diamond mining town of Kolmanskop and Lüderitz, 100 km away. Return in the afternoon to Klein-Aus peace. Relax with sundowners on the restaurant veranda or wooden deck watching the sun disappearing behind the mountain slopes, before enjoying a 3-course meal in the restaurant. Exchange travel experiences and recommendations at the Wild Horse Bar or at the cosy fireplace in the lounge before returning to your room for a good night's sleep and the anticipation of a new day.

Karas Region Trailer

A short teaser for the soon to be launched Namibia 14 regions DVD set. Full DVD coming soon.

Moon Landscape in Namib-Naukluft Park, west coast of Namibia, southern Africa

Video of Moon Landscape near coastal town of Swakopmund, Namibia.

#MoonLandscape #Namibia #NamibNaukluft

Two million years ago this canyon was a high mountain range, which became eroded by the actions of the Swakop River.

5 Facts about Moon landscape
The Moon Landscape is located within a 30-minute drive from the closest town, Swakopmund:
Swakopmund is a 40-minute drive from Walvis Bay International Airport.
The Moon Landscape is in a national park, and therefore falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism.
The travel terrain to this location is a combination of tarmac and gravel road.
Off-road driving is only permitted in designated areas.
The best time of day to film at the Moon Landscape is during sunrise or late afternoon, in order to capture the contrasts of the canyon.

If you're on a quest to see Weltwitschia Mirabilis, continue east along the Weltwitschia Drive to the Moon Landscape, a vista across eroded hills and valleys carved by the Swakop River. Here you may want to take a quick 12km return side-trip north to the farm and oasis of Goanikontes, which dates from 1848. It lies beside the Swakop River amid fabulous desert mountains, and serves as an excellent picnic site.

Swakopmund Namibia 4K Cinematic

A cinematic introduction to the coastal town of Swakopmund in Namibia to give you an idea of what you can look forward to on a visit to the popular beachside town of Swakopmund.

More about Swakopmund
-----------------------------------------

Wedged between the Atlantic ocean on one side and the Namib Desert on the other Swakopmund is quite an amazing place. Swakopmund is one of the oldest towns in Namibia, and certainly the oldest along the coast of Namibia.

Swakopmund is one of the few coastal towns in Namibia, there's Swakopmund, Walvis Bay, Luderitz Henties Bay (if you can call Henties Bay a town, really it's a fishing village) and that's it.

The roads around Swakopmund, like the skeleton coach road, are made of salt. Because Swakopmund is very unusual in that it has almost zero rain they can do that.

Being by the coast Swakopmund is a bit cooler than most of Namibia, .

Swakopmund town is small enough to enjoy, it has lots of beautiful old style architecture and of course the beach, although the Atlantic water is quite cool. Not exactly your tropical swimming water but it does look pretty.

One of the many good things about Swakopmund is that the food you can get here
excellent, seafood being popular of course since Swakopmund is on the coast.

I hope you enjoy this short cinematic introduction to Swakopmund in Namiba, if you are interested then don't forget to check out my Namibia roadtrip playlist for lots more info on Namibia.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

It’s easy to fall in love with the peaceful bungalows at Sandfontein, and with the cool inviting 20 metre lap-pool.
But as soon as the morning sun throws light over the rippling Namibian mountains, birds begin to sing, butterflies flutter into life, and the reserve’s big game animals gradually start to awaken, giving visitors a very good reason to get out and explore one of Africa’s largest privately owned nature reserves.

WHAT TO DO AT SANDFONTEIN

No timetables, no constraints. You decide what, where and when.
1. Scenic and sundowner drives. Animals outnumber visitors at Sandfontein by more than 400 to one. But the reserve is bigger than the island of Singapore and the animals are free to roam across the wild terrain. Discover the beauty of Sandfontein on a scenic drive and sighting one of the animals on the huge reserve is a bonus!
2. Hiking and nature trails.
3. Canoeing, fishing and/or bird-watching on the Orange River.
4. Photography: earthly ecstasy for photographers – the dramatic landscape, fauna and flora, and ever-changing light devours both film and memory.

THE BATTLE OF SANDFONTEIN

As the site of the legendary 1914 Battle of Sandfontein, the reserve is rich in historical significance. The combined British and South African forces, more than 2,500 in number, with some 4,300 support animals, were desperate for water.
They were ambushed and ultimately defeated by the German colonial troops, comprised of four machine-gun units, ten artillery units, and 1,700 riflemen. At the end of the battle, 50 enemy were dead, 100 injured and some 200 prisoners taken. The clash is the only battle during World War One where the South African forces suffered a resounding defeat at the hands of the lesser German troops.
Today the landscape is a living museum sprinkled with mini ramparts, shells and food tins - clues as to how the troops tried to survive in this dramatic landscape. Two German war graves lie on Sandfontein – one within walking distance of the lodge – and are still maintained by the German government.

THE BATTLE OF NORECHAB

Another living museum, also part of Sandfontein Nature Reserve, is the Battle of Norechab that took place on 14 February 1906 and was planned by the Nama (then known as the Hottentots) against the Schutztruppe forces.
200 Nama approached the German camp under the cover of night and they started their attack at first light. The Schutztruppen were ready for battle within six minutes, having been joined by a neighbouring division of 30 men who had heard the gunshots. The attack failed and the Nama were defeated. The Germans suffered five deaths and a further seven were wounded. As the Nama were unable to give their dead a proper burial, and because there is no written record of their account, we can only find out more information on their losses through further research.

ORABO RIVER VILLAGE

OraBo, a portmanteau of “Orange” and “Bohemian” is a tiny village originally established decades ago as an Italian mission station.
Located a few hundred metres from the Orange River, OraBo offers self-catering accommodation set within the Sandfontein Nature Reserve. The fishing is world-class.
There are two comfortable self-catering guest houses that can accommodate up to six guests per house.
Camping is also available at designated spots for tents and motorhomes.
