Brihadishvara Temple (originally known as Peruvudaiyar Kovil), locally known as Thanjai Periya Kovil, and also called Rajarajeswaram, is a Shaivite Dravidian styled temple dedicated to Shiva. It is one of the largest Hindu temples and an exemplary example of a fully realized Tamil architecture. It is called as Dakshina Meru (Meru of south).Built by Chola emperor Rajaraja I between 1003 and 1010 AD, the temple is a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Great Living Chola Temples, along with the Chola dynasty era Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple and Airavatesvara temple that is about 70 kilometres (43 mi) and 40 kilometres (25 mi) to its northeast respectively
A spectrum of Hindu temple styles continued to develop from the fifth to the ninth century over the Chalukya era rule as evidenced in Aihole, Badami and Pattadakal, and then with the Pallava era as witnessed at Mamallapuram and other monuments. Thereafter, between 850 and 1280 CE, Cholas emerged as the dominant dynasty.[2][22] The early Chola period saw a greater emphasis on securing their geopolitical boundaries and less emphasis on architecture. In the tenth century, within the Chola empire emerged features such as the multifaceted columns with projecting square capitals. This, states George Michell, signaled the start of the new Chola style.[2][note 1] This South Indian style is most fully realized both in scale and detail in the Brihadeshwara temple built between 1003 and 1010 by the Chola king Rajaraja I.

Streets are chaotic in Tamil Nadu, so those unfamiliar with the region should hire an experienced guide to get you safely from place to place. In addition, the streets can be dirty, with huge drifts of plastic trash. I was often struck by the dissonance of great beauty and great squalor in a single glance. Despite this, we found many things to enjoy about the city, often catching a tuk-tuk with our guide to experience them.
Thanjavur may not be an ideal place to start for a first-time visitor to India, but it will reward the experienced traveler with delicious food and mesmerizing architecture. A visit to the city is often part of an itinerary that includes other places of interest in the Tamil Nadu, such as Pondicherry, Chettinad and Madurai. It would also be a fantastic place to start a road trip across the wild Western Ghats to the beaches of Kochi on the Kerala coast. The monsoon rains fall from June to September, so plan accordingly.

During my visit to Thanjavur, I stumbled on something very special: Raja Raja Cholan's ceremonial bathtub.It is almost 10 feet long, made out of a single rock. Raja Raja Chola lived around 1000 A.D, so this bathtub was carved a thousand years ago.
Some excellent stone cutting techniques both outside and inside. A perfect rectangle at the top with straight corners. It is definitely a bathtub, because you can even see a drain hole to get the water out. The locals told me that this was used by King Raja Raja Chola on special occasions. The bathtub would be filled with water and special perfumes will be added. Exotic flowers would also be placed in the water to increase the fragrance. The king would then take a ceremonious bath, before going inside the temple's main chamber.
