Discovering East Africa's Hidden Gem: Sipi Falls in Uganda
Sipi Falls, located in Eastern Uganda's Kapchorwa District, is one of East Africa’s most spectacular natural attractions. Situated near the base of Mount Elgon, the falls form part of the border between Uganda and Kenya and stand at an impressive 105m in height.
Sipi Falls features several cascading waterfalls, each one offering a unique view. Visitors to the falls can take in the lush green foliage as well as the unforgettable sight of Mount Elgon in the distance. The area surrounding the falls is a popular hiking destination, and visitors can also enjoy camping and birdwatching around the area. The falls themselves provide a breathtaking experience, as the clear, refreshing waters cascade down into a beautiful plunge pool below.
Throughout the year, people also come to Sipi Falls to experience its beautiful waterfalls. The area features some of the most picturesque cascades in the region, with eight waterfalls forming the area’s largest feature. The two main waterfalls - the Sipi Falls and Chebonet Falls - are among the largest, and are a popular spot for both photography and sightseeing.

나일 강의 발원지 진자를 떠나 다음 목적지로 향하는 길. 최근 우간다 곳곳에서는 관광객 유치를 위한 도로공사가 한창이다. 빅토리아호수 북동쪽에 위치해 있는 엘곤 산. 케냐와 우간다의 국경에 자리한 이 산의 높이는 4,321m로 아프리카에서 4번째로 높다. 하지만, 이 엘곤 산을 더 유명하게 만든 것이 있었으니, 바로 시피 폭포다. 엘곤 산 해발 약 1,775m에 자리 잡고 있는 시피폭포는 3단 폭포다. 보다 정확한 위치는, 우간다와 케냐의 국경 가까이에 자리한 마운트엘곤 국립공원의 가장자리로 위쪽의 2개 보단 맨 아래쪽의 폭포가 가장 크다. 폭포 근처로 가까이 다가가자 귀청을 울리는 물소리가 어마어마하다. 3단 폭포 중 접근하기가 가장 쉽다는 마지막 폭포. 폭포의 바로 안까지 접근할 수 있다. 가까이에서 바라 본 폭포의 기세는 엄청나다. 주변의 모든 것을 쓸어버릴 듯 쏟아지는 세찬 물줄기에 나는 할 말을 잃었다. 우간다 사람들이 아름다움의 상징으로 꼽는 시피폭포. 시피폭포는, 우간다의 넓은 평야에서 살아가는 인간과 동물들을 살찌운다 해서, 우간다의 보석이라 불리기도 한다. 우간다를 찾는 관광객들이 꼭 들르는 대표 명소이기도 하다. “영화에서 보는 것처럼 너무 아름답네요.”“제가 한 단어로 우간다를 표현해 달라고 하면 어떻게 표현하시겠습니까?”“믿기 힘든(너무 좋아서)” “친절하고” “화려하고” “감탄스럽습니다.” 우기가 되면 아래로 떨어지는 물줄기가 더욱 강해진다. 적어도 5시간은 걸어야 시피폭포를 전체적으로 감상할 수 있다.

우간다에서 맞는 새로운 날. 또 다른 목적지를 향해 발길을 재촉하던 길 위에서 뜻밖의 친구들을 만났다. 바로 개코원숭이다. 아프리카 지역에서 가장 쉽게 마주친다는 개코원숭이는때로 도로의 정체의 주요인이 되기도 한다. 좀처럼 길을 비켜주지 않는 개코원숭이 때문에 사람들이 애를 먹는다. 어쩔 수 없이, 먹이로 유인해 보지만 쉽지 않다. 오히려 맛있는 바나나를 더 먹기 위해 자동차 지붕 위로 올라가는 모험을 강행하기도 한다. 그렇게 얼마나 씨름을 했을까. 간신히 개코원숭이와 헤어진 후 속도를 내려는 순간, 아직 미련을 버리지 못한 개코원숭이 한 마리가 우리 차를 향해 돌진해 자리를 잡는다. 이번엔 좀 더 덩치가 큰 개코원숭이 한 마리가 차를 향해 달려 들었다. 달콤한 바나나 때문이 었을까. 녀석은 아쉬운지 한참을 매달려 있다 동료들에게로 돌아갔다.

Abseiling Down Sipi Falls in Uganda
The Sipi Falls are arguably the most beautiful waterfalls in Uganda. They are also one of the most visited tourism sites in Uganda. The Sipi Falls consist of 3 waterfalls (Simba, Ngasire) that are separated by steep hillsides in the District of Kapchorwa East of Uganda. The falls are found outside the boundary of Mount Elgon National Park.
Adventure lovers looking for a rush of adrenaline on their visit can abseil/rappel from the top of the 100metre high Sipi Falls, or try climbing on the numerous high cliffs.
