Kaliningrad until 1946 known as Königsberg, is the largest city and the administrative centre of Kaliningrad Oblast, the westernmost oblast of Russia. The city is situated on the Pregolya River, at the head of the Vistula Lagoon on the Baltic Sea, with a population of 489,359 residents, up to 800,000 residents in the urban agglomeration. Kaliningrad is the second-largest city in the Northwestern Federal District, after Saint Petersburg, the third-largest city in the Baltic region, and the seventh-largest city on the Baltic Sea.

The settlement of modern-day Kaliningrad was founded in 1255 on the site of the ancient Old Prussian settlement Twangste by the Teutonic Knights during the Northern Crusades, and was named Königsberg in honor of King Ottokar II of Bohemia. A Baltic port city, it successively became the capital of the State of the Teutonic Order, the Duchy of Prussia (1525–1701) and East Prussia. Königsberg remained the coronation city of the Prussian monarchy, though the capital was moved to Berlin in 1701. From 1454 to 1455 the city under the name of Królewiec belonged to the Kingdom of Poland, and from 1466 to 1657 it was a Polish fief. Königsberg was the easternmost large city in Germany until World War II. The city was heavily damaged by Allied bombing in 1944 and during the Battle of Königsberg in 1945; it was then captured by the Soviet Union on 9 April 1945. The Potsdam Agreement of 1945 placed it under Soviet administration. The city was renamed to Kaliningrad in 1946 in honor of Soviet revolutionary Mikhail Kalinin. Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, it is governed as the administrative centre of Russia's Kaliningrad Oblast, an exclave sandwiched between Lithuania and Poland.

As a major transport hub, with sea and river ports, the city is home to the headquarters of the Baltic Fleet of the Russian Navy, and is one of the largest industrial centres in Russia. It was recognized as the best city in Russia in 2012, 2013 and 2014 according to Kommersant's magazine The Firm's Secret, the best city in Russia for business in 2013 according to Forbes, and was ranked fifth in the Urban Environment Quality Index published by Minstroy in 2019. Kaliningrad has been a major internal migration attraction in Russia over the past two decades, and was one of the host cities of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Fun with Maps – Kaliningrad aka Königsberg

This episode of Fun with Maps takes a look at a very strategic piece of land called Königsberg or Kaliningrad. Kaliningrad is actually a city in the administrative center of Kaliningrad Oblast, a Russian exclave between Poland and Lithuania on the Baltic Sea. Remember that an enclave is a piece of land that is totally surrounded by a foreign territory. An exclave is a piece of land that is politically attached to a larger piece but not physically having the same borders with it because of surrounding foreign territory. Many entities are both enclaves and exclaves. Kaliningrad is an exclave because while politically attached to Russia it is bordered by Poland and Lithuania and the Baltic Sea. An oblast is a political and administrative division of a country. Oblast is a term used by many former Soviet countries that is something like states or provinces. So how did Russia get territory to the west of Lithuania and north of Poland? It’s a long story starting with Prussia. For much of the last 700 years or so this land was Königsberg, an historic Prussian city that then became German. As you will see, Germany was forced to give up huge patches of its conquered land at the end of WWII. In 1945 the Potsdam Agreement was signed by the USSR, Britain and the USA. It specifically gave Kaliningrad (known as the German Königsberg at the time) to Russia, without opposition. As you can tell from the map, it’s very important as Russia’s Baltic Navy base. It was also a center of knowledge and culture with people such as Immanuel Kant, Leonard Euler, Christian Goldbach and others there. Caspian Sea Monster. Not a plane, not a ship

In the 1960s, an American satellite flying over the USSR captured something that had left many within the US intelligence community scratching their heads. A gigantic machine that didn’t look like anything they’d seen before: not a plane, not a ship but something else. Confused by the type and purpose the Americans dubbed their discovery the Caspian Monster or the Caspian Sea monster which is how it's generally known today.

Saint Petersburg City Walking Tour: Vasileostrovskiy District, Street 8 line.
This video is a continuation of a walk along 8 line street in St. Petersburg (Russia) on Vasilievsky Island (Vasileostrovsky District).
Our route will start from Maly Prospekt and end at the Makarov embankment at the old pier.
This area was supposed to become the center of the city. Many famous architects and sculptors worked on the creation of this area. Here is the building of the Twelve Collegia (project by D. Trezzini). At the beginning of the 18th century, it housed 12 colleges, the Senate and the Synod, and now it houses the St. Petersburg State University.

The Menshikov Palace is under construction nearby (today it is one of the branches of the Hermitage). The Academy of Sciences was built according to the project of Quarenghi.

Prince A.D. Menshikov ordered to cut a clearing from his palace in the west, to the Baltic Sea. This glade was named Bolshoy Pershpektiva, and later - Bolshoy Prospekt. The core of the district is made up of Bolshoi, Maly and Sredny avenues, which are intersected by lines of streets with numbers in their names. Until the 70s of the 18th century, the canals were located along different lines. The word line does not mean the street, but the side of the canal.

Russia Travel: Kaliningrad (August 2019)

There is a small enclave of Russia, bordered by Lithuania, Poland - which contains the Kaliningrad Oblast. Once was part of Prussia and then Germany, after World War 2 it became part of the Soviet Union and became a Russian city. The Germans called the city Königsberg and it was almost razed to the ground by Allied bombing during the Second World War. Today, it is not only what has been preserved, but also that which has been entirely destroyed, that reminds us of the war and the layering of the city’s post-war landscape. The clearest example of this is the intractable debate among architects and the public around the fate of two of the city’s most famous landmarks — the House of Soviets and the Königsberg Castle — and whether, to demolish the former and rebuild the latter. Despite the big mix of soviet and leftovers of Prussian/German architecture, the city has a unique feeling with very open and hospitable people. The city is definitely worth visiting and exploring for a long weekend.

map of Kaliningrad [ Russia ]

Kaliningrad , Russian: Калининград, IPA: [kəlʲɪnʲɪnˈɡrat]), until 1946 known as Königsberg (German pronunciation: [ˈkøːnɪksbɛʁk]; Russian: Кёнигсберг, tr. Kyonigsberg, IPA: [ˈkʲɵnʲɪɡzbʲɪrk]), is the largest city and the administrative centre of Kaliningrad Oblast, the westernmost oblast of Russia. The city is situated on the Pregolya River, at the head of the Vistula Lagoon on the Baltic Sea, and is the only ice-free port of Russia and the Baltic states on the Baltic Sea. Its population is 489,35 with up to 800,000 residents in the urban agglomeration. Kaliningrad is the second-largest city in the Northwestern Federal District, after Saint Petersburg, the third-largest city in the Baltic region, and the seventh-largest city on the Baltic Sea.

Kaliningrad has been a major internal migration attraction in Russia over the past two decades, and was one of the host cities of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Kaliningrad is at the mouth of the navigable Pregolya River, which empties into the Vistula Lagoon, an inlet of the Baltic Sea.

Sea vessels can access Gdańsk Bay/Bay of Danzig and the Baltic Sea by way of the Vistula Lagoon and the Strait of Baltiysk.

Until around 1900, ships drawing more than 2 meters (6 ft 7 in) of water could not pass the bar and come into town;[citation needed] larger vessels had to anchor at Pillau (now Baltiysk), where cargo was transferred to smaller vessels. In 1901, a ship canal between Königsberg and Pillau, completed at a cost of 13 million German marks,[citation needed] enabled vessels of a 6.5 m (21 ft 4 in) draught to moor alongside the town (see also Ports of the Baltic Sea).

Facts About Republic of Kaliningrad
**************************************************************************
Kaliningrad is the capital of the Russian province of the same name, sandwiched between Poland and Lithuania along the Baltic Coast. Dubbed Königsberg during centuries of Prussian rule, the city was largely reconstructed after WWII. Traces of its German heritage can be seen in the surviving Brandenburg Gate and the riverside Fishing Village, a dining and shopping destination with re-created medieval-style buildings.
For a long time, Kaliningrad was part of Germany. The city's history began in 1255, when the Teutonic Knights founded a fortress on a hill, named Königsberg (King's Hill). The city first became part of Russia in 1758 as a result of its victory in the Seven Years' War. However, in 1762 the land was returned to the Kingdom of Prussia. In 1946, Koenigsberg again became a Russian city when WWII resulted in some German lands being transferred to the Soviet Union. Upon this transfer, the city received a new name – Kaliningrad, after the Soviet politician Mikhail Kalinin.
Kaliningrad often hosts various musical shows and performances, including international ones, such as the Mikael Tariverdiev Organ Competition, the Kaliningrad City Jazz Festival, the Kaliningrad in Rock Festival, and many more. Every autumn, the city hosts the Baltic Seasons Art Festival, at which theaters from many Russian regions present their best performances.
The city symbol is the Amber Museum, located in a red-brick tower which once formed part of the fortress. The Museum showcases sunstone of various shades, shapes, and sizes, with the largest exhibit weighing more than 4 kg. It also has the world's largest amber mosaic, the Rus mosaic, weighing more than 70 kg and consisting of around 3,000 elements.

HOW DOES KALININGRAD BECOME RUSSIAN

Hello, today you will find out HOW KALININGRAD BECAME RUSSIAN? Initially, Kaliningrad was called Konigsberg and was part of Germany. The city was founded in the thirteenth century by the Teutonic Knights. Earlier it was part of the territory of Russia, but it was repeatedly selected in other different ways. For example, in the middle of the eighteenth century, when the Seven Years' War ended. The eastern territory of Prussia and the city of Königsberg were accepted into Russia, but soon, under the terms of the peace agreement, they returned. How did the current Kaliningrad become Russian in the end? Everything was decided during the Second World War, when in 1949, Koenigsberg joined the Soviet Union. So the Germans paid dearly to the USSR when they surrendered. Kaliningrad was taken by assault by Soviet soldiers in April. The assault lasted four days, and the troops were led by Marshal Vasilevsky. Soon, the Potsdam Conference took place, during which Koenigsberg was finally annexed to the Soviet Union. Few people know, but initially, when the authorities wanted to give a new name to the city, the choice was between Baltiysk and Slavgrad. As a result, at this time, the famous politician Kalinin dies, after whom this city was named. After the end of the war, all remaining German residents who could not leave the city were deported to Germany. Already from the next year, the mass settlement of the city by Soviet people began. The city was dilapidated after the armed clashes, and some of the indigenous people remained in their homes. Soviet people often helped the Germans who were left to live in difficult conditions after difficult times. The reconstruction of Kaliningrad took a long time, but soon the city was turned by numerous efforts into a unique historical monument. Best (& free) view of Tver

Located 180 kilometres (110 mi) northwest of Moscow, Tver was formerly the capital of a powerful medieval state and a model provincial town in the Russian Empire, with a population of 60,000 on 14 January 1913. It is situated at the confluence of the Volga and Tvertsa Rivers. The city was known as Kalinin from 1931 to 1990.
