Kalgoorlie-Boulder, known colloquially as just Kalgoorlie, is a city in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia, located 595 km east-northeast of Perth at the end of the Great Eastern Highway.
The mining of gold, along with other metals such as nickel, has been a major industry in Kalgoorlie ever since, and today employs about one-quarter of Kalgoorlie's workforce and generates a significant proportion of its income.

Kalgoorlie, Western Australia Walking tour [4K]
Join me for another one of my walking tours this time coming from the city of Kalgoollie in Western Australia which is widely considered to be Australia's unofficial gold mining city and largest city in the Australian outback. Located around 600km east of Perth in the aptly named Goldfields- Esperance region of Western Australia Kalgoorlie is by far the largest centre in this massive geographical region which spans east to the SA and NT borders, south to the WA south eastern coastline and north up to the Pilbara. First founded in 1893 off the back of the discovery of gold in the region, gold mining still very much dominates the economy of Kalgoorlie today with its famous Super Pit Gold Mine which was once Australia's largest (and still second largest) open cut gold mine which still dominates the economic life of the city.
There is much more than just gold mining in this historic city however and this walking tour will seek to comprehensively showcase many of the historic wide open streets and historic buildings which make Kalgoorlie such an iconic looking city. In this walking tour I will show you the once bustling Hannan Street with its magnitude of old historic pubs such as the Exchange Hotel, Palace Hotel and Kalgoorlie Hotel, the historic old Town Hall and Visitors Centre, Kalgoorlie Railway Station, St Mary's Church, Goldfields Art Centre, Curtin University School of the Mines, Forrest Street and more!
I will also visit the WA Museum of the Goldfields and its iconic red mining shaft that dominates the city's skyline and also the Mount Charlotte Reservoir and Lookout to showcase to you more great 360 sweeping views over the Kalgoorlie skyline and also out looking over to the Super Pit.

We start in the great mining city of Kalgoorlie, where we learnt about the significant gold mining history of the city, from the discovery of gold there way back in 1893, right up to today with the 3.5km long Super Pit, which was Australia’s largest open cut gold mine until 2016. We even had a go at panning for gold (without much success!)
It was then time to head back to the coast, and what a coast it was!!! Esperance has beaches galore – all with the whitest of sand, and turquoise to deep blue water.
Our last stop was Hopetoun, a great little spot with a free beachside RV overnighter, perfect for visiting Fitzgerald River National Park.

Kalgoorlie-Boulder is famous as a gold mining town, and is home to Australia's largest open cut gold mine, The Fimiston Open Pit or better known Super Pit. Visitors can witness the sheer magnitude of this 3.5 kilometre long, 1.5 kilometre wide and 360 metre deep pit from the Super Pit Lookout.
To experience life as a miner, don overalls, boots and a hard hat and head underground at Kalgoorlie-Boulders first gold mine. The Gold Mine of Fame guided tour runs for around 1 and a half hours and leads you down original timber lined mine shafts via ladders and through narrow portals.
The town offers a range of historic attractions including Western Australia's only operating pharmacy museum - the century old Boulder Pharmacy Museum, or learn about the regions involvements in the Boer War, WWI, WWII and the Vietnam War at the Goldfields War Museum and Information Centre.
The Royal Flying Doctor Visitor Centre offers an insight into the valuable service provided to remote communities, while the Karlkurla Bushland Park offers a 4km walking trail and viewing platform of the surrounding bushland.
Further afield, Lake Ballard at Menzies is home to world-renown artist, Anthony Gormley's 51 life-sized metal statues, based on silhouettes of the local people.
For those on a touring holiday, the beautiful coastal town of Esperance, with its white sand beaches and turquoise water, is a 4 and a half drive and offers a Mediterranean-like climate with excellent fishing and swimming.
