Kalajoki sandbars are a nature destination and tourist center in Kalajoki, a province of Northern Ostrobothnia on the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia. The Kalajoki sandbars are located along Highway 8, about ten kilometers south of the Kalajoki city center.
There are many stories about the birth of Kalajoki sandbars. Formerly known as the Bolsheviks, the place was a destination for the local population at least as early as the 1890s. The first kiosk in the area began in the 1920s. Launched in 1931, the so-called Hilman Hotel was for a long time the only host company. In 1964, the State Hotel was built in the area, which was visited by, among others, President Urho Kekkonen and his Russian guests. In the 1960s, a dance floor and a holiday union hotel became an area. The municipality of Kalajoki (a city since 2002) maintained the campsite, which was transferred to private ownership in 2004. The determined development of the tourist area began in the 1960s, after which the number of companies in the area increased. The municipality of Kalajoki built Spa Sanifani in 1990. A significant growth leap was experienced in the first years of the 21st century, when a new hotel was added to the area (Santa's Resort & Spa Hotel Sani, originally Spa Hotel Sani and Metsähallitus Marine Nature Center in 2007). 2008. In the late 2010s, the number of holiday home construction in Hiekkasärkki has grown greatly, and in 2017 there are about 12,500 beds in the area, compared to only about 3,500 in the early 2000s. In May 2018, Ostoskylä Raitti was opened near Hiekkasärkkä.

Kalajoella järjestettiin 12.3.2022 Talvipurjehduksen SM-kisat. Lajeina kilpailussa olivat: purjekelkat, siivet ja leijat. Kilpailun järjesti Perämeri WindRiders, Kallan Purjehtijat sekä Rautio Sports.
Jääpurjehdusta on harrastettu Kalajoella 80-luvun alusta saakka ja Perämeri Kalajoen edustalla tarjoaa mahtavat puitteet lajiin.

Why Finland is one of the BEST countries for van life.
A travel guide to some of the best stops in Finland. We traveled Finland/Suomi in our self converted camper van and it was fantastic. We drove right from northern Lapland to Helsinki, passing through Kalajoki and having some extraordinary wildlife encounters (brown bears!) along the way.

Finland really does offer the ultimate escape from the rest of Europe. The forests and the wilderness is endless, and the set up and right to roam means that you have the freedom to enjoy being in nature unhindered. We also loved the wildlife, from reindeer on the roads to bears from secret lakeside hides, there was more wildlife in Finland than we'd seen on the rest of our trip through Europe.

Kävimme koeponnistamassa uudet reitit kahden aktiiviharrastajan Saaran ja Arin kanssa. Keli oli varsin haastava, sillä edellisen päivän ja yön oli pyryttänyt paljon lunta, mutta aamulla ajetut reitit kannattelivat kuitenkin hyvin Safaritalolta lainaan saatuja sähköavusteisia Fatbike-pyöriä. Laskimme hieman rengaspaineita, jolloin kantavuus ja pito parani entisestään.
