Dnipro, Ukraine-Interesting Side Travel Option

While not as intriguing of a travel destination as say, Kyiv or Lviv, Dnipro does provide a sense of adventure since it’s definitely off the beaten path in Ukraine. However, if you are looking for a place that is cheaper than Kyiv, Dnipro is not it, though. But if you are coming from the West the prices still won’t break the bank. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this brief glimpse into a lesser known Ukrainian city. #Ukraine #Dnipro #Travel #waterfall #city #urban #2021

DNIEPER RIVER: Kiev, Ukraine (Landscape Video Series) 4K/UltraHD

Dnieper River: Kiev, Ukraine (Landscape Video Series) 4K/UltraHD features stunning and spectacular aerial, walking, and drone video footage great for travel, visit, and tourism planning set to original music. The video is the perfect companion for indoor exercise routines involving treadmills, steppers, cycling, and rowing. The Dnieper is one of the major rivers of Europe, rising in the Valdai Hills near Smolensk, Russia, before flowing through Belarus and Ukraine to the Black Sea. It is the longest river of Ukraine and Belarus and the fourth-longest river in Europe, after Volga, Danube and Ural. The total length is approximately 2,200 km (1,400 mi) with a drainage basin of 504,000 square kilometres (195,000 sq mi). Historically, the river was an important barrier, dividing Ukraine into right and left banks. Nowadays, the river is noted for its dams and hydroelectric stations. The Dnieper is an important navigable waterway for the economy of Ukraine and is connected via the Dnieper–Bug Canal to other waterways in Europe. In antiquity, the river was known to the Greeks as the Borysthenes and was part of the Amber Road.

In popular culture:
The river is one of the symbols of the Ukrainian nation and is mentioned in the national anthem of Ukraine.

Some of the cities on its banks — Dnipro, Dniprorudne, Kamianka-Dniprovska — are named after the river.

The river is referred to as Dnipro, in the song Hey, Dnipro, Dnipro.

The folk metal band Turisas have a song called The Dnieper Rapids on their 2007 album The Varangian Way.

Leon Bolier featured a track called Dnipro in his debut 2-CD album Pictures. The track is said to be inspired by his visit to Kyiv in May 2008.

Roberto Bolaño's novel 2666 features the Dnieper as a significant feature of the village of Hans Reiter.

Beat laureate Spencer Hash spent childhood summers observing tide patterns in the Dnieper. It provides the backdrop for most of his 1998 novel Embassy.

This scenery video features original music by Drum Knight:

MAP OF KHERSON UKRAINE

Kherson Oblast (Ukrainian: Херсо́нська, also called Khersonshchyna is an oblast (province) in southern Ukraine, just north of Crimea which is currently occupied by Russian military. Its administrative center is Kherson, a city under Russian occupation. The area of the region is 28,461 km2 and the population 1,016,707 (2021 est.) It is considered the 'fruit basket' of the country, as much of its agricultural production is dispersed throughout the country, with production peaking during the summer months.
The Kherson Oblast is bordered by Dnipropetrovsk Oblast on the north, the Black Sea and the disputed region of Crimea on the south, Mykolaiv Oblast on the west, and the Azov Sea and Zaporizhzhia Oblast on the east.

The Dnieper River runs through the oblast which includes the Kakhovka Reservoir.

The oblast includes (within Henichesk Raion) the northern portion of the Arabat Spit, a thin strip of land between the brackish Syvash and the Sea of Azov that is geographically part of the Crimean Peninsula. Due to Russia gaining de facto control of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea in 2014, the southern areas of Kherson were the only parts of the Crimean Peninsula under direct Ukrainian control prior to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Administrative divisions
Main article: Administrative divisions of Kherson Oblast
Until the 2020 re-organisation, the Kherson Oblast was administratively subdivided into 18 raions (districts) and 3 municipalities. The municipalities – Kherson (administrative center of the oblast), Nova Kakhovka, and Kakhovka – were directly subordinate to the oblast government. The Kherson municipality was subdivided into 3 urban districts.

ZAPOROZHIAN SICH, Ukraine: heart of Ukrainian freedom & bravery, Cossack history | Khortytsia island

#Ukraine #Zaporozhian #Sich #Cossack #history #Ukrainianhistory #Khortytsia #worldwithatwist

The Zaporozhian Sich – the cradle of Ukrainian Cossacks, Khortytsia island, Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine:

Instagram:

According to a legend, in the 16th century the Ukrainian slaves were tired from oppression of their masters. The bravest of them ran away and decided to organize their own military defensive formation, based on the democracy rules, to protect independence and rights of Ukrainians. They were called Cossacks - free, independent people. Later they built Zaporozhian Sich.
Zaporozhian Sich was formed beyond the rapids (granite ledges of rocks) of the Dnieper River on the Khortytsya island. The phrase “Beyond the rapids” called in Ukrainian “za porogamy” was transformed into “Zaporizhzhia”. And Sich comes from the Ukrainian verb “sikty” (in English called “to cut”), which meant “to cut the wood.” The first settlers chose for the living inaccessible to enemies thickets, where they made “cuts” – passages free of trees (in Ukrainian called “sich”).
The historians consider Dmytro Baida Vyshnevetsky to be the founder of the “first Zaporozhian Sich” in the 16-17 centuries.

Today recreated historical complex “Zaporozhian Sich” is a prototype of the original Sich. It was reproduced by the scientists by the found remains. These remains were flooded by the waters of the Kakhovka Reservoir on the Dnieper River. The original Sich was about 10 times larger.

There were 8 Sichs on the territory of Ukraine at different times. 5 Sichs – on the territory of the Dnipropetrovsk region, 2 – on the territory of Kherson region, but one and the very first Zaporozhian Sich was located right here on the Khortytsya island. And the Zaporozhian Sich became the most famous.
Zaporozhian Sich is a unique historical and cultural complex that shows the image of the Cossack capital and the atmosphere of the Cossacks’ time. The construction of the complex began in 2004.
This territory has created a unique image, a unique mentality of the Zaporozhian Cossack, a Cossack warrior, a defender of Western Christian values. This is a person who had a great willpower, an unbending fortitude, and was very respectable. Moreover, the Cossacks were literate (historians claim that some Cossacks of the Zaporozhian Sich knew up to 12 languages).
The Sich is the capital of the Cossack lands, but the Cossacks lived not only in the Sich. There was a garrison of about 5 thousand persons in the Sich, and the rest lived outside the Sich, on the territory of “zymivnyky” (house for winter time) or farms. They were engaged in fishing, hunting, agriculture, lived with their wives and children, had a normal life. There were also some Cossacks, who lived in the Sich and never married (they took a vow of celibacy), but these were a minority.
Zaporozhian Sich consists of two parts – the Small Kish (trade and craft suburb) and the Big Kish (Cossack garrison). The whole town is protected by fortifications, defensive towers.
The interior space is also equipped by the Cossack traditions: Cossack kurins (houses, where they lived), a forge (where metal products were made), pottery (with clay products), a tavern (a place where the Cossacks had their meals) and a Greek house (like a hotel) where the ambassadors stayed during their visit to Zaporozhian Sich.
Cossack kurin was the house where the Cossacks lived. It was 18 meters long. There were 38 of such kurins. There was always a smell of a smoke (in Ukrainian “kurylo”) which came from the smoking stove in the kurin. This smoke was transformed into Ukrainian word “kurin”. A kurin is a military and a territorial unit, like a district. Cossacks from one locality tried to settle in one kurin on a territorial basis, so each kurin was called like another cities of Ukraine: Cherkasy, Chernihiv or Kaniv kurin.

Gunhouse in Ukrainian “Pushkarnya” is, the arsenal of the Sich, where cannons, weapons, cannonballs, gunpowder stocks were stored.
There is the Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin in the centre of the Sich. All Churches at every Sich at different times were called like that. This church is working, consecrated, divine services, weddings, christenings are performed here, and this is really the central place in the Sich. The main value of this church is the iconostasis, which is over 200 years old.
The Intercession was considered the patroness of the Cossacks and the Feast of the Intercession is celebrated today along with the Cossacks’ Day on October 14th. Now it is also the day of the Defender of Ukraine.
The Cossacks were Orthodox Christians. When the Cossacks retired from military affairs, they often lived in monasteries, donated a lot of money for the activities of churches and monasteries.....

We are looking for Pyramiden, a Russian settlement technically on Norwegian land that was abandoned overnight. And we are here to find out why.

This is Pyramiden. Once home to over 1000? people, now home to 6.
It is overlooked by the mighty Nordenskiöld glacier.
But why did the Soviets come here, and why did Russia end up leaving so quickly?

Once a lawless state, Svalbard, in a bid to solve conflict between mining owners and workers, came under Norwegian sovereignty with The Svalbard Treaty in 1920

The countries who signed the treaty agreed to give full and absolute sovereignty to Norway over the islands, under the conditions that signatories citizens could live there without discrimination, that the environment was protected, *AND that the land would not be militarised.

Today, there are 46 countries who have signed the treaty, but only the Russians and Norwegians have an active presence on the archipelago.

As well as being home to bountiful coal, the Soviet coal company’s move to take over Pyramiden very quickly served political and strategic purposes.

It was a showroom of Soviet communism that was otherwise not seen due to the iron curtain. It was one of two presences here in the high arctic which could help with future claims to sea and land territories as well as potential strategic shipping routes as Arctic ice melts away. (Something like this)

At a time when life inside the Soviet Union was largely unknown, Pyramiden was used to portray a Soviet Utopia of sorts - boasting of helicopters for transport, self sufficient farmland and a strong community that thrived in the long polar nights. They created a village that was designed to alleviate the hardships that Arctic living presented, including a school, hospital, gym and swimming pool, and culture house, making workers and their families feel at home in these high arctic fjords.

Miners, mainly from Ukraine at the time, were eager to come to make the most of good wages, free accommodation and food allowing them to save for a better future.

A carefully crafted portrayal of the very best that the Mainland had to offer, conveniently on a platform for the whole world to see.

The Canteen was the heart of the village, the place where everyone came for every meal of the day. It was decorated with lavish mosaics and even had a lushus garden in the entrance hall in a bid to make people forget the harsh conditions outside. There was also grass indoors for kids to play as parents socialized.

- As the Soviet economic crash casted a shadow of uncertainty on Pyramiden’s future, the Russian company eventually realised they couldn’t sustain Pyramiden. Barentsburg.
America vs Russia. conspiracy.

- In 1994, miners started to be laid off, families sent home and, by 1998, the once bustling village quickly waved off the last boat of 18 miners, leaving, Johan totally alone with some unwelcome visitors, polar bears.

Model of a 200 - 1800 m dam break at the Nova Kakhovka dam

Modeled by Dämmningsverket AB using the US Army Corps of Engineers (SACE) software HEC-RAS 6.3. The terrain data comes from Nasa.'s Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) and are available from the United States Geographical Survey (USGS).

The model is not based on actual measurements of the current state of the Dnipro flow, waterline, temperature, humidity, air pressure, wind speed and anytning else which would affect the model, but on assumptions for a worst case.

Assumptions include that the water-level in the dam is 13 meters above the Dnipro downstream, and that the dam break over an hour expands to a width of approximately 200, 400 and 1800 meters.

The destruction of the dam by Russia woudl be a war crime according to the Geneva Convention.
