Μονή Αστερίου, Καισαριανή
Σε μια κατάφυτη, ήσυχη πλαγιά του Υμηττού, με πανοραμική θέα προς το λεκανοπέδιο της Αθήνας, στα βορειοανατολικά της Μονής Καισαριανής, βρίσκεται η Μονή Αστερίου, μετόχι της Μονής Πετράκη. Είναι αφιερωμένη στους Ταξιάρχες και αναφέρεται με τις προσωνυμίες Αστερίου ή Αστέρη ή το Αστέρι, για τις οποίες έχουν διατυπωθεί διάφορες απόψεις, αλλά η έρευνα δεν έχει δώσει σαφή ερμηνεία.
Η παράδοση συνδέει την ιστορία της με τον Όσιο Λουκά τον Στειριώτη, που έδρασε τον 10ο αιώνα, ωστόσο η θεωρία αυτή φαίνεται να καταρρίπτεται, καθώς τα αρχιτεκτονικά κατάλοιπα της μονής ανάγονται στον 16ο αιώνα. Το καθολικό υπήρχε τουλάχιστον από το 1646, όπως δείχνει το παλαιότερο από τα χαράγματα που έχουν εντοπιστεί στους τοίχους του. Σύμφωνα με επιγραφή που σώζεται στον ναό, η μονή αποτελούσε πατριαρχικό σταυροπήγιο έως το 1716. Είχε παιδευτική δραστηριότητα και διέθετε πλούσια βιβλιοθήκη, η οποία διασκορπίστηκε το 1687 με την εισβολή των Βενετών του Μοροζίνι, ενώ αργότερα, το 1826-1827, χάθηκαν και τα τελευταία απομεινάρια της, που είχαν μεταφερθεί στην Ακρόπολη της Αθήνας για μεγαλύτερη ασφάλεια. Το 1833, με τον νόμο της αντιβασιλείας του Όθωνα η μονή διαλύθηκε και ερημώθηκε. Το 1960 η βασίλισσα Φρειδερίκη ανέλαβε την ανακαίνισή της και την προσθήκη νέων κτισμάτων.
Το συγκρότημα έχει τη μορφή φρουρίου που αναπτύσσεται μέσα σε τετράπλευρο περίβολο. Στο κέντρο του βρίσκεται το καθολικό, που ανήκει στον τύπο του σύνθετου τετρακιόνιου σταυροειδούς εγγεγραμμένου ναού με τριμερή νάρθηκα στη δυτική πλευρά. Οι τοίχοι του είναι κτισμένοι με αργολιθοδομή και ο τρούλος του, που ανήκει στον απλοποιημένο «αθηναϊκό» τύπο, στηρίζεται σε τέσσερις κίονες που σχηματίζονται από πώρινους σοβατισμένους σπονδύλους. Το εσωτερικό του ναού κοσμούσαν τοιχογραφίες, σπαράγματα των οποίων σώζονται στον κυρίως ναό και στον νάρθηκα. Πρόκειται για έργα απλοϊκής και επαρχιακής τέχνης, που χρονολογούνται στον 16ο αιώνα.
Στο συγκρότημα, εκτός από το καθολικό σώζονται σήμερα ανακαινισμένα τα κελιά, η τράπεζα, και στον εξωτερικό χώρο, η κρήνη.
