Nurmes is a city in Finland, located in the province of North Karelia at the northern end of Pielinen. After the 2020 municipal union, the city will have a population of 9,787 and an area of 2,692.85 km², of which 291.49 km² will be water bodies. The population density is 4.07 inhabitants / km² and the land area is 2,401.36 km². The current city of Nurmes comprises the former Nurmes town hall and the associated Nurmes rural municipality and the municipality of Valtimo.
Nurmes' neighboring municipalities are Juuka in the south, Lieksa in the southeast, Kuhmo in the northeast, Sotkamo in the north and Rautavaara in the west. The municipality of the artery was merged with Nurmes on 1 January 2020.
The origin of the name is in Nurmesjärvi. The word Nurmes comes from the Karelian word grass, which means meadow like coastal meadow.The most central part of Nurmes city center is located on a ridge between Nurmesjärvi and Pielinen.
Nurmes hosts many musical activities during Christmas, such as various concerts and events. Nurmes was declared the Christmas City of Finland in 2005 and the City of Christmas in Europe in 2009. [8] Nurmes is known as the city of birches, as there are thousands of birches in the center of Nurmes, in Old Kauppa. Bomba Karelian Village and Spa and Hyvärilä Youth and Tourism Center are located in Nurmes.

Nurmeksessa järjestetään joulun alla paljon musiikillista toimintaa, kuten erilaisia konsertteja ja tapahtumia. Nurmes julistautui Suomen joululaulukaupungiksi vuonna 2005 ja Euroopan joululaulukaupungiksi 2009. Nurmes tunnetaan koivujen kaupunkina, sillä Nurmeksen keskustassa, Vanhassa Kauppalassa, on tuhansia koivuja. Ilomantsin Sotatie, Öykkösenvaaran tarina
Öykkösenvaaran taistelualue Ilomantsissa on luokiteltu ensimmäisen tärkeysluokan sotahistorialliseksi kohteeksi. Alueella on Museoviraston ohjauksessa kunnostettuja puolustusrakenteita ja taisteluasemia, sekä rakennettu helppokulkuinen polku, jonka varrelle pystytetyissä opastustauluissa esitellään kunkin kohteen tausta. Jalustalle asetettu panssarintorjuntatykki, TykK/21.Pr:n muistokivi ja alueen yleisopaste muistuttavat alueen tapahtumista.
Rakennustaiteellisesti ainutlaatuisen, aina avoimen opastuskeskuksen tiloissa annetaan selkeiden karttapiirrosten ja tekstien avulla yleiskuva talvi- ja jatkósodan yleisestä historiasta. Useissa kookkaissa tauluissa keskitytään Ilomantsissa käytyihin taisteluihin, erityisesti kesään 1944.
Opasteisiin tutustumalla sotatapahtumista saa erittäin hyvän kuvan. Opastustauluja täydentävät tapahtumiin liittyvät autenttiset, kookkaat ja koskettavat valokuvat. Kuvin ja tekstein esitellään myös joitakin Ilomantsin taisteluihin osallistuneita Mannerheim-ristin ritareita ja käytössä olleita asetyyppejä.
Öykkösenvaaran umpeen kasvanutta maisemaa avattiin syksyllä 2020 räjäyttämällä noin 60 puunrunkoa.
