I visited the Gut Brau brewery and also walked in the Center of Joinville. Joinville is a municipality located in the northern region of the state of Santa Catarina. Its population, according to IBGE estimates for 2021, was 604,708 inhabitants, being the largest city in the state, ahead of the capital Florianópolis, and it is the third most populous city in the southern region of Brazil, behind only Porto Alegre and Curitiba (da which is only 130 kilometers away, therefore, closer to the capital of Paraná than to the state itself).
The city has a high human development index (0.809) among Brazilian municipalities, occupying the 21st national position. A study pointed Joinville as the second best city to live in Brazil. Joinville boasts the titles of Manchester Santa Catarina, City of Flowers, City of Princes, and City of Dance. It is also known for hosting the Joinville Dance Festival (considered the biggest dance festival in the world), the Bolshoi Theater School in Brazil (the only one in the world outside Russia) and the Joinville Esporte Clube.
Manchester Santa Catarina, City of Princes, are the nicknames that Joinville bears. The municipality under study has one of the best HDIs in Santa Catarina. The city was created at the same time as Blumenau (second half of the 19th century), with an ethnic group similar to that of its contemporary city. The German people, who came from a region with low temperatures to a country with high temperatures, imposed their determination in the construction of the city known for its working population and for the metal-mechanical, textile, food, software, household appliances, computer industries, machines, etc. Joinville has the largest Gross Domestic Product in the state of Santa Catarina.
Joinville's first name was Colônia Dona Francisca, whose history began when Princess Francisca de Bragança, sister of Pedro II of Brazil, married in 1843 the French prince Francisco Fernando de Orléans, receiving the title of prince of Joinville. The city's name was changed to Joinville, in honor of the prince, who received those lands as a dowry. In 1848, the couple negotiated the land, at least in part, with the Sociedade Colonizadora Hamburguesa, as Francisco's father, King Luis Felipe of France, had been dethroned and the family was in financial difficulties. The entrepreneurship of German, Swiss and Norwegian immigrants built and continued its growth, making Joinville one of the greatest regional powers.
