The Bourgogne Road-Trip – Bourgogne Côte Saint-Jacques (1/13)

This web series takes the form of a road trip along which wine lovers can explore Bourgogne appellation's 13 geographical denomination with Marie and Alain, two youtubers who set off to find out more about the wine, the winemakers, and also the gastronomy and cultural heritage of each terroir.

In the north of Bourgogne, discover the Bourgogne Côte Saint-Jacques appellation. The nearest Bourgogne vineyard to Paris (1 hour), it looks down over the charming little village of Joigny, on the north bank of the Yonne.
Follow Marie & Alain, who drive along the south-facing vineyards, backed by the Forest of Othe plateau, and overhanging the valley and the town. The vines grow on a very special flinty clay soil.
Explore the town marked by wine, whose traces can be seen in the architecture (stained glass windows of the churches, decorations of the half-timbered houses...)
A unique land in Bourgogne, Joigny is the first wine-producing village you will come across on your way from Paris. It offers wines, the Bourgogne Côte Saint-Jacques, typical, confidential and rare, to discover absolutely.

A little hidden square behind the Palais des Ducs that is home to the sensational Musée des Beaux Arts, the Square des Ducs features the statue of Philip the Good. This little place is what remains from a rather large garden created for the wife of Philip the Bold, and is today a favourite spot for locals to relax on a bench near the fountain in the shade of the beautiful silver lime and purple-beech trees.

Pau, the resort town's way of life

Explore here the particular way of life in a resort town between the 19th century and the start of the 20th century through this interview with Cécile Devos, a researcher with the cultural heritage inventory for the city of Pau.

This resort town became home to large hotels for travellers, which were scattered around the centre and originally built as luxury accommodation. Such hotels included the Grand Hôtel Gassion, the Grand Hôtel and the Hôtel de France, which were built in the second half of the 19th century for wealthy guests wintering in Pau. The winter season was the busiest on account of the mild climate at this time of year in this part of France.

Pau boasted leisure facilities that the town hall had put in place specifically to attract such tourists: casino, bandstand, theatre, concert hall, ballroom—all designed to welcome this particular social class and offer activities tailored to its way of life. There was also no shortage of places to go for a chat or a stroll. In those days, when you stayed in a resort town, it was important to walk around and be seen.
There were also guest houses that let out apartments and property owners who let out small villas that they had built specifically for letting out in winter.
The most privileged groups, or perhaps those who were most in love with Pau, even built their own villas on their land.
Villas sprang up in the centre as well, with all their attributes: a beautiful building, a park, a garden... though perhaps on a smaller scale compared to villas outside of town.
Villas built in the suburbs, on the outskirts, boasted much vaster grounds, larger parks, more elaborate gardens, a view, and a landscape that was a little different and occasionally amplified through further acquisition of land, or the design of an architect or a landscape gardener.
Most villas had adjacent stables, which made it possible to keep horses at one’s residence, along with the staff to care for them—the grooms. Daily activities included horseback riding and fox hunting, but also rides in horse-drawn carriages, which were seen as a sign of wealth that needed to be shown off. People would bring out their carriage, take it for a spin around town, and then park it back in the garage in front of the villa.

Walking in FRANCE - GIVRY • Burgundy Nightwalk ????????【4K】Walking FRANCE [Bourgogne]

Walking in Burgundy. Nightwalk in GIVRY..

Burgundy 101 - Five Places to See

Five Places to See slides from Burgundy 101, an introductory travel webinar on Burgundy France, hosted by Jeff Steiner of Burgundy 101 took place on February 20th 2011.

French Canals: TIGHT QUARTERS

While work continues on the build of our Enksail Orion 49 aluminum sailboat, we take the opportunity to do some canal boat cruising on the French Canals where we demonstrate boat handling techniques for tight quarters such as locks and narrow channels. We visit picturesque towns and a unique winery as we navigate through beautiful countryside. On this cruise, we charter a 50-foot (15 metre) Penichette 1500FB canal boat for 2 weeks and show you the experience of bareboat chartering in France as we travel the tranquil Nivernais route out and back from Joigny.
