Xishuangbanna, in the south of Yunnan Province, is like experiencing Southeast Asia without leaving Mainland China. Its intricate architecture, vast rainforests, delicious cuisine, and picturesque night markets are all reasons to visit. But after a four day trip in the prefecture, I left with a conflicted feeling. Even though its cultures do overlap, is Banna trying too hard to be like Thailand, Laos, or Myanmar? What has Xishuangbanna sacrificed in becoming one of the biggest tourist attractions in the country?

Jinghong City is a county-level city in Xishuangbanna Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China, and is the location of the state government. The total area is 6,867 square kilometers, and the total population in 2020 is 642,737. The word Jinghong means City of Dawn in Dai language.
Jinghong, Xishuangbanna, located in the tropics, has attracted many people from other regions to settle here. Some people who have settled here say that they don't want to leave after living in Banna for more than a week.

Traveling in China | Xishuangbanna Part I: the majestic Thailand of China
In 2020 the national day and the Mid autumn festival coincide on the same dates, so from October 1st to the 8th we have holidays here in China. This time we decided to a place far from Shenzhen, is a city that not many people in China know, which I wonder why since this is very beautiful and interesting place! Very different from the China we are used to, this city resembles more to Thailand or any other country from Southeast Asia than China itself. Still beautiful, we spent 4 days in this wonderful city, exploring its parks, temples, gastronomy and night life. We Eat Local @ the Xishuangbanna Night Market // Dai People in China
I love eating at night markets, and Xishuangbanna (AKA Jinghong, Yunnan) has a great one. It sits along the Mekong River, which is called the Lancang in China. The food is delicious and plentiful. After browsing the booths, we decided to get some BBQ and take a seat with the many locals that were crammed into stools, chairs, and whatever else you can sit on. The cramped atmosphere was like no other that I've experienced. We ate many sticks of meat and vegetables, and also had some pineapple cooked rice, a Dai specialty.
The Dai people are one of the 55 recognized ethnic minority groups in China. Jinghong, which is in southern Yunnan province, is the former Tai kingdom capital. It was once called Sipsongpanna, which is now written for the Chinese language as Xishuangbanna. You could say that Jinghong is China's Thailand/Laos/Cambodia. The people that make up those countries, many of them would be considered Dai by the Chinese definition. In reality, they are from different tribes - many even speak different languages - but in China 'Dai' is an umbrella term used to describe them all.

XISHUANGBANNA (Yunnan, China) unique Thai culture inside China. Stunning view from drone (in 4K)
Xishuangbanna (西双版纳) in Yunnan is noted for its distinct culture, more similar to Thai and Laos, than the rest of China - which is basically Han culture. The main city is Jinghong, and the two most famous sites are Mengle Great Buddha (勐泐大佛寺) Temple, and Gaozhuang Xishuangjing (告庄西双景). Both look amazing from a drone flying above them - which I did (watch this video).

Overland Southwest China 5 Xishuangbanna in Yunnan
On the border of Burma and Laos sits an area full of different ethnic minority groups including the Dai, Hani, Lisu and Yao as well as hill tribes of Aini, Jinuo, Bulang, Lahu and Wa. We took an overnight sleeper bus from Kunming to Jinghong, an experience in itself, and trekked through the region towards the town of Menghun where we heard there was a very colorful market that attracts hill-tribes once a week. Highly recommended.

Xishuangbanna is an autonomous prefecture in China's southwestern Yunnan province, bordering Myanmar and Laos. Strong influence by Dai culture, It has distinctive temples and tropical rainforests.
Dai dance & Sunday Market at Border Trade Market Festival of Menglong Manfei Village, Xishuangbanna
Manfei Village is located in Menglong Town, Jinghong City, Xishuangbanna, Yunnan, China, next to Menglong 240 path in the China-Myanmar border area, only 10 kilometers away from Myanmar. Perhaps because the border has just been opened, the first Border Trade Market Festival did not see the participation of residents from neighboring countries, but the nearby villagers will come to the event, and the scene is very lively. Compared with other Dai villages, Manfei Village looks more modern, but still inherits a lot of traditional Dai culture. We can see various Dai-style buildings here, as well as hand-woven Dai brocade.

HOTEL REVIEW: Mekong River Jinglan Xishuangbanna
During our last trip to the magical city of Xishuangbanna in Yunnan Province, China we stayed in two different hotels. This is the first of the two hotels we visited.
Mekong River Jinglan Hotel is located in the west of Shuangzhuang, the most popular place in Jinghong City, Xishuangbanna, close to the Lijiang River, with a beautiful view of the mountains and rivers. With an overall construction area of over 220,000 square meters, the hotel has created a comprehensive holiday experience space for customers who come to eat, live and travel. There are 309 different types of rooms in the West End, 396 East Hotel Apartments, and a buffet restaurant with 500 people dining, a thousand-person banquet hall, a luxurious western restaurant on the roof, and a panoramic view lounge. A variety of luxurious meeting rooms, gymnasium, swimming pool, a thousand square meters water park, high-end spa, children's exclusive entertainment areas and other complete leisure facilities.
