Hotel Central in Jimma, Ethiopia
It is difficult to explain how exciting a $20 U.S. a night hotel can be unless you've been traveling in a third world country for weeks. The Hotel Central in Jimma had a toilet that flushed and hot water! Now that may not seem like anything to write home about, but we were ecstatic.
Jimma was the last major stop before Addis Ababa and a long flight home to Chicago.

Third Floor Room -- City View Hotel, Jimma, Ethiopia
We declined this room.
As we toured Ethiopia to video the beauty and culture of that nation. we came to the Jimma region. The agenda required we stay a few nights in Jimma, the largest town.
In the sprawling town of Jimma, our tour company took us to the best possible hotel, the City View. However, Jimma is a new city, with all the projects-in-progress of emerging nations -- new highways, new streets, new shops, a new stadium. And that means construction and mud and chaotic traffic.
The management offered us the room shown in the video. Third floor, no elevator. We had cameras and tripods, three cases of camera equipment and audio recording equipment, a suitcase of clothing and essentials -- a total exceeding 250 pounds to carry up flights of stairs.
I saw no space in that room to open the cases to transfer data to hard drives, charge batteries, clean lenses, or even change clothes. And sleeping? Even if I stacked the cases, where would I lay out the computer, hard drives, battery chargers? How many nights would I sleep in a stack of cases, cables, and equipment?
I declined the room. I explained the situation to the management -- and they offered us a suite in 'The Annex,' a new building across the mud boulevard.
The 'Annex' can be seen out the window of the small room in the video. The next video will show the suite we received.
In the following days, we toured and videoed the lush coffee forests of Oromia, one of the most productive coffee regions in the world. The people welcomed us with ceremonies, dances, gifts.
In the evenings, we returned to the suite at the 'Annex.' And the personnel at the City Annex provided us with excellent service, good food, and steady electricity required for the video work.
Though Jimma, as shown in the video, is a city in development, I recommend region for all travelers. The highway to the forests offers fast travel through the towns and beautiful forest. The people welcome foreigners. And the prices are minimal.
In time, Jimma will be a paved, modern city. And the City View provides good rooms at a reasonable cost.

King Abba Jifar's Palace Jimma, Ethiopia
Former King Abba Jifar's Palace doesn't look like a palace by any stretch of the imagination. A series of wooden buildings; some reconstructed while others are in shambles. It is still important to visit because of Abba Jifar's historical significance.
His realm was important since the trade route ran from Zanzibar, and through Gambela to Jimma. An extremely big man (his height is said to have been, 2 meters-10 centimeters/6 feet-8 inches), Abba Jifar had six wives (the last one died recently at age 113), and 14 children.
