Hawkinsville, Georgia to Jesup, Georgia on US-341 Driving Tour

Hawkinsville, Georgia; Chauncey, Georgia; Mcrae, Georgia; Hazelhurst, Georgia; Baxley, Georgia; Jesup, Georgia; US-341; driving tour
We are retired, and we travel to places that were once thriving but are not doing so well now sharing our thoughts about the places we drive through. We focus on South Georgia, Middle Georgia, and other places surrounding us. Sometimes the places that we visit are doing well. We also visit places of interest like state parks, historical places, and museums. We try to be positive about the areas we go to because there is too much negativity in the world already.

Ten Amazing Places Floridians Don't Want You to Know About

We traveled the state from coast to coast to find destinations all over Florida that native (and transplanted!) Floridians would rather keep to themselves. These are the non-Disney Worlds, the lesser known gems that aren't advertised all over those tourist brochures you see in the hotel lobby.

10 Best Roadside Attractions Near Orlando | Florida Roadside Attractions

Orlando is famous for its theme parks and family-friendly attractions. But if you're looking for something a little off the beaten path, consider checking out a few of the area's best roadside attractions.

In the 1920s and 30s as Florida's population grew and more people began to travel by car, a number of new roadside attractions sprung up along the state's highways. These oddball places broke up the long journey and allowed visitors to see something interesting.

Cypress Gardens made its debut in the mid 1930s, becoming famous for its water ski shows. By the end of the decade, Marineland had opened south of St. Augustine. This oceanside marine park was one of the first places in the world where visitors could swim with dolphins.

New quirky attractions continued to spring up around the state throughout the 50s and 60s as Florida’s tourism industry kept growing. But the rise of the modern theme park in the 70s and 80s marked the beginning of the end for many of the smaller attractions. They just weren’t able to keep up with the times and travelers would pass them by on the way to Disney,.

Fortunately for those nostalgic for a simpler time, a surprising number of classic roadside attractions are still open and continue to attract visitors from all over the world.

On this episode, we begin a new series highlighting the best roadside attractions near Orlando. The first installment covers everything from vibrant gardens and deep springs to vintage landmarks and even some newer places you can’t miss.

Acadia National Park Guide [Where to Go and What to See]

*** Download The Photographer's Guide to Acadia now:

Acadia National Park in Maine is one of the Top Ten most popular national parks in the country... but what's there to see, and what're the top attractions in the park? Acadia has mountains, lakes, woods, trails, miles of ocean coastline and more. But what should you see when you're there? This video highlights some of the most iconic places you'll want to see on your visit, so you can spend more time seeing the best sights, and less time wondering where to go next.

You might have heard of Cadillac Mountain and Thunder Hole, but do you know the best times to visit them? And when should you *not* visit the lighthouse? As a professional photographer whose photos are collected worldwide and sold in galleries and online, I've made it my mission to seek out the best places to visit and photograph in Acadia.

I've been visiting Acadia National Park every year since 2006 and have come to know the Park intimately. I've written an ebook for photographers, The Photographer's Guide to Acadia (see below), as well as a coffee table book about autumn in Acadia, Under October Skies. I love Acadia and enjoy sharing my knowledge of the park. Don't waste precious time trying to find the best places to visit. Check out this video and then start planning your trip!

Fort Jesup State Historic Site

Fort Jesup State Historic Site

This is a short adventure we had while camping at North Toledo Bend State Park. As we went into Many Louisiana for fuel and groceries, Ashley found this Fort close by. We had to make the short 10 minute drive to check it out. If your in this area you should check it out also.
- North Toledo Bend State Park

Fort Jesup is a reminder of a young nation's growing pains and a relic of Louisiana's rich international heritage. When the Louisiana Purchase Treaty of 1803 failed to clearly define the western boundary of Louisiana, which was also the western border of the country at that time, the United States claimed eastern Texas and Spain claimed western Louisiana. The ensuing dispute gave rise to the Neutral Ground, an area where the laws of neither nation were enforced. Soldiers and settlers were kept out and rogues of various stripes ruled the region.

After the territorial boundary was finally fixed at the Sabine River by the Florida Purchase Treaty of 1819, the United States built Fort Jesup in 1822. Lieutenant Colonel Zachary Taylor established and commanded the garrison, which was originally called Cantonment Jesup in honor of Taylor's good friend Brigadier General Thomas Sidney Jesup. Taylor's troops managed to establish law and order in the Neutral Ground and Fort Jesup remained an important military post for nearly 25 years.

Soldiers at Fort Jesup performed many duties which opened the frontier to American settlers: building roads, surveying the frontier, clearing the Red River and negotiating treaties. The garrison at Fort Jesup was also called on to control slave insurrections in Alexandria and to catch criminals trying to cross the border. The soldiers of Fort Jesup saw thousands of settlers move into the province of Texas and then watched Texas become independent of Mexican authority. In 1845, half of the U.S. Army traveled through the Fort Jesup area en route to war with Mexico.

The fort was abandoned in 1846 when it was no longer needed as a border outpost. One kitchen is the only historic structure remaining from the large reservation that once spread across the frontier. The reconstructed officers' quarters houses visitor information, interpretive exhibits and restrooms. This building was reconstructed with the assistance of historians from the Army Quartermasters General's Office and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. In 1961, Fort Jesup was designated a National Historic Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior and, as such, joined a select group of properties which have been recognized for their importance in American history.
