Jefferson City has many historic buildings that have stood the test of time. Visit the State Penitentiary, the Old Governor’s Mansion, or the Capitol Building. Many will make you feel as if you’ve been transported back to the Civil War era, such as the Jefferson Historic Landing Site and the Missouri Farm Bureau Log Home.
The city also offers plenty of museums to spend your time in for more glimpses into its history. Go to the Museum of Missouri Military History to see how the state has played a part in almost every American conflict or the Missouri State Museum for a more complete picture of its history.
Despite its name, Jefferson City has a high concentration of state parks. Stop by Rock Bridge and enter ts freezing Devil’s Icebox Cave, traverse the long Katy Trail at the state park that bears its name, ride your ATV through Finger Lakes State Park, or go to Binder State Park to play with your children or pets.
Jefferson City residents also know how to have fun. Throw down at the Capitol Bowl, play at the arcade in the Capital Mall, then dance the night away at the Mission LLC nightclub.
If you need a quick drink, stand in line for a unique experience at Prison Brews, a brewery that’s decorated itself to match the nearby Penitentiary. You can also stand in line to get a treat from Central Dairy if you’re patient enough.

Jefferson City is the capital of the U.S. state of Missouri. As of the 2010 census, the population was 43,079 which makes it the 15th-largest city in Missouri [8] It is also the county seat of Cole County, although a small portion of the city extends into Callaway County. It is the principal city of the Jefferson City metropolitan area, which has a population of 149,807 and encompasses both counties. Jefferson City is named for Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States.
Jefferson City is on the northern edge of the Ozark Plateau on the southern side of the Missouri River near the state's geographic centre, in a region known as Mid-Missouri. It is also at the western edge of one of the major wine-producing regions of the Midwest, the Missouri Rhineland. The city is dominated by the domed Capitol, which rises from a bluff overlooking the Missouri River to the north; Lewis and Clark passed the bluff on their historic expedition upriver before Europeans established any settlement there.
Jefferson City is home to Lincoln University, a historically black college founded in 1866 and later designated as a land-grant university.In pre-Columbian times, this region was home of an ancient people known only as the Mound Builders. By the time European settlers began arriving, the Mound Builders had vanished. The contemporary indigenous peoples were called the Osage Indians.
