CHIAPAS, MEXICO | 7 Best Places To Visit In Chiapas, Mexico

We explored the best places to go in Chiapas during an amazing 12-day road trip. In this video, we break down the best places to go in Chiapas, Mexico from our perspective. We had an amazing time visiting these Chiapas destinations and would highly recommend a road trip of your own one day to see them! Places we visited included: El Chiffon, Lagunas de Montebello, Las Nubes, the Lacandon Jungle, Palenque, San Cristobal de las Casas, and the Sumidero Canyon. Enjoy our video on the best places to go in Chiapas!

1. El Chiflón
The first stop on our Chiapas road trip was El Chiflón, near the city of Comitán. This is possibly the best place to go in Chiapas because of its otherworldly beauty. El Chiflon had some of the most beautiful waterfalls we have ever seen in our lives.

2. Lagunas de Montebello
Only 85 kilometres, or 53 miles, South from El Chiflon are the Lagunas de Montebello. This national park consists of 59 multi-coloured lakes in a pine forest. It’s a great place to hike, horse-back ride, drive around, and explore the lakes by traditional “balsa” boats.

3. Las Nubes
The next stop on our road trip was Las Nubes. The town and waterfalls are tucked away in the Chiapas jungle and don’t attract as many tourists as the other Chiapas highlights. This is why Las Nubes is truly one of the best places to go in Chiapas. The waterfalls stretch for kilometres and we highly recommend doing the full trail to the various viewpoints.

4. Lacandon jungle
The Lacandon Jungle is the most unique place to go in Chiapas! Not only is this the biggest rainforest in Mexico, but it is also home to the Lacandon people, who are the descendants of the ancient Maya. When the Spanish arrived in Mexico, this group fled to the jungle and survived as a culture by living deep in the rainforest. They were out of contact with the rest of the world until the 20th century.

5. Palenque
Palenque was the next stop on our road trip and one of the most famous places to go in Chiapas. Known for its mighty Mayan temples, this place is one of the best examples of Maya architecture in Mexico. Only 2% of the ruins are uncovered, which means that 98% are still covered by the surrounding land. We went on a 3 hour tour of the ruins and the jungle, which we highly recommend. During the final jungle part you’ll uncover houses of the Mayan people and find unique animals of the area.

6. San cristobal de las Casas
The colonial town of San Cristobal de las Casas is arguably one of the prettiest cities in all of Mexico. Its Historical Centre is filled with gorgeous colourful architecture and wide patios against a mountain backdrop. But besides being charming, this town is also extremely interesting thanks to its ancient past and blend of different cultures.

7. Sumidero Canyon
The Sumidero Canyon was the final stop on our road trip around Chiapas. It’s located right outside the city of Tuxtla Guttierez, and can be explored from the water as well as from the canyon walls. We did a boat ride from Chiapa de Corzo, which takes you through the canyon for 2 to 3 hours.

10 Most Beautiful Beaches in Mexico [Is Cancun included?]

✅Best-Selling travel gear
????Booking.com Deals

Mexico is a vast country with an extensive and attractive coastline to match. Measuring almost 10,000 km in total, the beaches of this North American country stretch along with four main bodies of water. The Pacific Ocean, the Gulf of California, the Gulf of Mexico, and finally, the temperate, crystal clear waters of the Caribbean. With many travelers venturing there for the sand and surf, we’ve compiled this guide to Mexico’s top beaches.

Welcome to ThingsToDo Channel we publish new content every day, so be sure to subscribe and don't forget to ring the bell to get notified about our latest video.

Dive into 10 beautiful beaches in Mexico.

Playa Mazunte.

One of Mexico’s most popular coastlines is that of the southern state of Oaxaca. Facing the Pacific Ocean, it boasts serene, sandy beaches, and crashing turquoise waves.

Playa Paraiso.

Literally named ‘Paradise Beach’, Playa Paraíso in Tulum is one of the best beaches in the country, almost unrivaled in beauty and ecological variety. Hemmed in by swaying palms and rugged cliffs, this picture-perfect beach sits beneath an elegant, iconic archaeological ruin.
Playa Las Gatas.

Steering away from the idyllic Quintana Roo and towards the more tumultuous Guerrero state region, Playa Las Gatas in Zihuatanejo is a relatively underrated beach.

Isla Holbox.

A relatively undiscovered island in the state of Quintana Roo is Isla Holbox. Although it has numerous beaches, its tiny size warrants its inclusion here as a singular entity.

Playa Norte.

Another excellent Quintana Roo island for beach finds is the long and easily accessible Isla Mujeres. Notably more touristy than Holbox, this quaint isle has a wide selection of beach bars, accommodation, and restaurants. However, it’s undoubted number one attraction is the stunning Playa Norte. Crystal clear waters and near enough white, powdery sand make this easily one of Mexico’s most beautiful beaches. Get there early in the morning and enjoy the relative lull before the sun worshippers begin arriving later in the day.

Bahia Balandra.

La Paz is a favorite of holidaymakers and so it makes sense that one of the beaches in that region would be amongst the most beautiful in the whole country. Bahía Balandra is a serene, shallow water piece of the Mexican coastline, making it perfect for kids and those who aren’t great at swimming. Azure toned water teems with tropical, colorful fish that can easily be seen with a simple snorkel. Get there early to make the most of the sprawling surroundings before people start arriving.

Playa del Amor.

Known in English as Lover’s Beach, Playa del Amor in tourist haven Cabo San Lucas ominously backs onto a beach named Divorce Beach. However, don’t let this put you off visiting. Playa del Amor ranks highly amongst Mexico’s top beaches and is perhaps the most well-known in Cabo San Lucas. Situated right next to the famous rock formation at the pinnacle of this peninsular region, it’s a beautifully romantic spot. Be careful when swimming, though, and only enter the water in the Bahia de Cabo San Lucas area of the beach, as the Pacific is much more dangerous.

Punta Negra.

Another tourist favorite is Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, which is situated on Mexico’s Pacific coastline. While Playa Los Muertos on the malecón usually grabs all the attention, venturing even a little further afield reaps big rewards in hot and humid Vallarta. Head instead to Punta Negra, a well-hidden and lesser frequented beach, further south than the historic town center. Bring your own beach umbrella and brush up on your Spanish since you’ll mainly find locals here.

Playa Maroma.

It would be a disservice to talk about beautiful Mexican beaches without mentioning Cancún at least once. Playa Maroma is one of the best on the Riviera Maya. Part of the Catalonia all-inclusive resort, this beach is a fine example of Cancún’s typical coastline conditions. Powder soft, fine sand and crystal clear waters gently lap away in the background, making for an overall feeling of serenity and peace.

Playa Gemelas.

A second Puerto Vallarta beach and another that is often untouched by tourists, Playa Gemelas is made up of two small, twin beaches located south of the main center. These beaches are home to a turtle launching spot so you may be lucky enough to witness some releases into the wild. Practically private, piercing blue waters make for prime photo-snapping opportunities, although bear in mind that due to the mountainous backdrop for which Vallarta is famous, access can be a little tricky.

Isla Mujeres Mexico Tour 2021

If you’re looking for an Isla Mujeres Mexico Tour look no further! We have found the best tour on Isla Mujeres for you. If you love the ocean and snorkeling this one is for you!

Between May and September, the largest migration of whale sharks in the world can be found off the coast of Isla Mujeres! Which means that snorkeling with whale sharks is one of the most popular tours on Isla Mujeres during the summer months, and for good reason!

This day trip started off at Sea Hawk Divers where they briefed us, provided a light breakfast and motion sickness tablets before bringing us to the dock where we linked up with their sister company, Mexico Divers. Driving out to find them took about an hour, and at 22 miles out to sea our Captain Luis spotted the first whale shark! We were the first ones to find them - how cool is that?! It wasn’t long before all the other boats pulled up, but what is fantastic about Mexico is that they protect the whale sharks. So unlike some other countries where there are literally hundreds of people flailing around in the water at the same time, in Isla Mujeres only 2 snorkelers per boat are allowed in the water at once. Pretty groovy huh?

Captain Luis said that he believed there were over 100 whale sharks! And there weren’t just whale sharks, there were dolphins and mantas and turtles too!

After we were done snorkeling, Mexico Divers provided us with sandwiches and drinks - but the tour didn’t end there. They brought us to a local reef where we drift snorkeled and after enjoyed fresh ceviche on the boat! All for $125 - it was quite the day and one of the best tours we have ever done!

Tune in to experience this unforgettable day with us! Warning: A lot of puns to come ????
