Ogre Municipality - a place for a fresh start

In the middle of Latvia near its capital city Riga lies Ogre Municipality. There is nature arround every corner. And people love to engage in sporting activities and explore new horizons.
Ogre Municipality is place, where meet someone. Maybe that one casual encounter will lead to unexpected adventures.
Ogre Municipality boasts the pine-surrounded and well-kept city of Ogre, where modern technologies are widely used for the convenience of residents and visitors. Lielvārde town is known throughout Latvia for its rich cultural heritage, which can be explored in the Andrejs Pumpurs’ Lielvārde Museum and the Lielvārde Park with the ruins of a medieval castle, whereas the name of Ikšķile associates with the beginnings of Christianity in Latvia - the ruins of the oldest stone building in the Baltics can still be seen on St. Meinard’s Island. Ķegums, in its turn, is connected with the beginnings of Latvia's unified electricity supply. A visit to the Energy Museum will provide anyone with new knowledge about the history and development of Latvia's energy sector. But the rural territory of Ogre Municipality with its beautiful landscapes, diverse forests, vast meadows and the meanders of the Ogre River attracts nature lovers.
Who knows – maybe one day this becomes a place for a fresh start.

salutations my friends. this is a map of Riga , Latvia. The river Daugava has been a trade route since antiquity, part of the Vikings' Dvina–Dnieper navigation route to Byzantium. A sheltered natural harbour 15 km (9.3 mi) upriver from the mouth of the Daugava—the site of today's Riga—has been recorded, as Duna Urbs, as early as the 2nd century. It was settled by the Livs, a Finnic tribe.
The building of the Brotherhood of Blackheads is one of the most iconic buildings of Old Riga (Vecrīga).
Riga began to develop as a centre of Viking trade during the early Middle Ages. Riga's inhabitants occupied themselves mainly with fishing, animal husbandry, and trading, later developing crafts (in bone, wood, amber, and iron).
The Livonian Chronicle of Henry testifies to Riga having long been a trading centre by the 12th century, referring to it as portus antiquus (ancient port), and describes dwellings and warehouses used to store mostly flax, and hides. German traders began visiting Riga, establishing a nearby outpost in 1158. excuse me. please comment about Riga. continuing.
Along with German traders the monk Meinhard of Segeberg arrived to convert the Livonian pagans to Christianity. Catholic and Orthodox Christianity had already arrived in Latvia more than a century earlier, and many Latvians had been baptised. Meinhard settled among the Livs, building a castle and church at Uexküll (now known as Ikšķile), upstream from Riga, and established his bishopric there. The Livs, however, continued to practice paganism and Meinhard died in Uexküll in 1196, having failed in his mission. In 1198, the Bishop Berthold arrived with a contingent of crusaders and commenced a campaign of forced Christianisation. Berthold died soon afterwards and his forces were defeated.
The Church mobilised to avenge this defeat. Pope Innocent III issued a bull declaring a crusade against the Livonians. Bishop Albert was proclaimed Bishop of Livonia by his uncle Hartwig of Uthlede, Prince-Archbishop of Bremen and Hamburg in 1199. Albert landed in Riga in 1200 with 23 ships and 500 Westphalian crusaders. In 1201, he transferred the seat of the Livonian bishopric from Uexküll to Riga, extorting agreement to do this from the elders of Riga by force.

The year 1201 also marked the first arrival of German merchants in Novgorod, via the Dvina. To defend territory and trade, Albert established the Order of Livonian Brothers of the Sword in 1202, which was open to nobles and merchants.
The Christianisation of the Livs continued. In 1207, Albert started to fortify the town. Emperor Philip invested Albert with Livonia as a fief and principality of the Holy Roman Empire. To promote a permanent military presence, territorial ownership was divided between the Church and the Order, with the Church taking Riga and two-thirds of all lands conquered and granting the Order a third. Until then, it had been customary for crusaders to serve for a year and then return home.
Albert had ensured Riga's commercial future by obtaining papal bulls which decreed that all German merchants had to carry on their Baltic trade through Riga. In 1211, Riga minted its first coinage, and Albert laid the cornerstone for the Riga Dom. Riga was not yet secure as an alliance of tribes failed to take Riga. In 1212, Albert led a campaign to compel Polotsk to grant German merchants free river passage. Polotsk conceded Kukenois (Koknese) and Jersika to Albert, also ending the Livs' tribute to Polotsk.
Riga's merchant citizenry chafed and sought greater autonomy from the Church. Saint Meinhard's Island on Daugava river in ???????? Latvia
Ikšķile is a place where more than 800 years ago historical events of both national and European importance took place. The ruins of the oldest sacred stone building, located on the St. Meinhard’s Island on the river Daugava, are the witnesses of these events. In 1184, Meinhard, who was an Augustinian canon at the Segeberg Abbey in Holstein, started to build a church on the island. The church served as the chair of the Livonian bishop till 1201, when Riga was founded. The building was thoroughly reconstructed during 1879–1881, but was destroyed in 1916. Nowadays, a 10 m high metal cross (artist: E. Samovičs), and a stone altar (sculptor: J. Karlovs) are placed on the island. For conservation purposes the ruins were covered with a metal roof in 2002. Visitors can get to the ruins via passenger ferry or a boat. Each August the St. Meinhard's day is celebrated on the island, and the Holy Mass is held. If previously arranged, it is possible to held baptism or wedding on the island. An architectural and historical monument of national importance.

Āgenskalns (historically known also as Hāgenskalns or Hagensberg) is a district in Riga, located on the left bank of the Daugava, an old neighbourhood, mainly built in the late 19th to early 20th century. The total area of Āgenskalns is 4,6 km2, which is a lot less than other districts of Riga.

Zilo kalnu teritorija ir labiekārtota atpūtniekiem un tūristiem, tajā atrodas Dubkalnu ūdenskrātuve un 30 metrus augstais Zilo kalnu skatu tornis, kas atklāts 2013. gadā un ir izvietots augstākajā kalnu punktā. Cauri visai parka teritorijai ir ierīkota apgaismota distanču slēpošanas trase.
Great idea for weekends nearby Riga. Ogre Blue Mountains is a nature park in Ogre and Ikšķile region. The 312-hectare park has been a specially protected nature area since 2004. The Blue Mountains area is well-maintained for vacationers and tourists, it houses the Dubkalni Reservoir and the 30-meter-high Blue Mountains Lookout Tower, which was opened in 2013 and is located at the highest point of the mountains. An illuminated cross-country ski run is installed throughout the park.
