I ALMOST DIDN’T MAKE IT… HIKING VOLCANO ACATENANGO, GUATEMALA! (FULL TOUR & TIPS)

If you’re traveling Guatemala and are looking for things to do in Guatemala and are up for a heart pumping adventure hiking up Volcán Acatenango is a great option. Volcano Acatenango is located around an hour from Antigua and starts at an elevation of 2,400 m. In this Guatemala Travel Vlog I will take you through my entire experience of hiking Volcan Acatenango, all the ups and the downs, literally! After a 5 hour hike straight up we reach base camp which is located at 3,600 meters. It’s here where we rest, take in the views of Volcán Fuego and sleep for the night before ascending to the peak of Acatenango for sunrise, 3,976 m (13,044 feet). This hike was the hardest physical activity I have ever completed and I will be honest there were many times I wanted to turn back around but knowing you were there with me kept me going! I hope this Acatenango Guatemala video helps you out when you’re planning your trip to Guatemala! #guatemala #acatenango

/// ABOUT US ///
Hi! We are Eric and Sarah, a couple of Canadians currently travelling around Central America. We’ve been married since 2017 but have known each other since we were only 6 years old! During our last year of university, we spent 4 months in Honduras on a semester abroad and fell in love with Latin America. Since then, we began planning and saving to do an extensive Latin America tour. 2020 delayed those plans by half a year but during this time stuck in BC, we explored a new hobby (like everyone in the pandemic) of videography and photography. We are now using our new skills to document our adventures around South and Central America. Our desire through these videos is to provide helpful and inspiring content for other travelers while also showing people around the world how beautiful Latin America truly is! Thanks for following along and please leave a comment to say hi!

Semuc Champey Adventures: Cave Swimming + Waterfall Jumping with Zephyr Lodge in Lanquin Guatemala

Who wants to jump off waterfalls, swim in caves, wade in turquoise waters, and hike through one of the most beautiful forests in Guatemala? Well this is the video for you if you want to experience one of the most picturesque landscapes in Central America and Guatemala. Semuc Champey is a National Monument known for the turquoise waters, 300 meter limestone bridge, clear pools to swim in, and is located just outside of Lanquin, Guatemala. #semucchampey #lanquinguatemala #guatemalatravel #guatemalatravelguide #centralamerica #guatemala
.
Many people come for Semuc Champey, but I particularly fell in love with the experience of visiting the Lanquin Caves, hiking to the Semuc Champey Mirador, and eating lunch with the locals. Zephyr Lodge is also an experience in itself, with beautiful dorms, deluxe dorms, private rooms, cabins, an infinity pool with the best view, and a restaurant on site there is everything you need. My opinion is this is the best place to stay when visiting Lanquin, Guatemala and Semuc Champey.

For almost a millennium, the ancient ruins of great architecture lay buried beneath the jungle vegetation on the Yucatan Peninsula. Abandoned by their creators these ancient temples and pyramids are a stunning reminder of a powerful civilization that once ruled the people of Central America. Although the accomplishments of the ancient Mayans are astonishing, no city would escape the inevitable collapse. One by one they were swallowed by the rainforest leaving the amazing Mayan ruins hidden, waiting to be discovered.

Tikal Ruins are breathtaking Mayan Ruins in Northern Guatemala. Tikal is one of the most popular places to visit in Guatemala so we wanted to show you how to experience it to the fullest!

We first spent a few nights on Flores Island before making our way into Tikal park. Belize Day 2- Day Trip to Tikal, Guatemala from San Ignacio, Belize

This video will show you on how to go to Tikal from Belize by car.

Tikal is an ancient Mayan city in the rainforests of northern Guatemala. Possibly dating to the 1st century A.D., Tikal flourished between 200 and 850 A.D. and was later abandoned. Its iconic ruins of temples and palaces include the giant, ceremonial Lost World (Mundo Perdido) Pyramid and the Temple of the Grand Jaguar. At 70 meters, Temple IV is the tallest pre-Columbian structure in the Americas.

Hiking the Third Highest Volcano in Guatemala | Acatenango | Central America | Indian Travel Couple

Hiking the 13,044 ft. Acatenango Volcano in Guatemala is one of our most memorable travel experiences. It is a grueling hike, yet the rewards are totally worth the physical effort and the mental strength that this hike demands.

We went for an overnight hiking adventure to Acatenango volcano, the third highest peak in Guatemala and all of Central America.

Day 1:

We hiked for about 5-6 hours (including breaks) to reach our base camp on Acatenango. The trail took us through various ecosystems - farmlands and oak forests, cloud forests, coniferous forests and volcanic sands and rock. The hike was steep but the views were nice.

After reaching the base camp, we enjoyed the spectacular show of the neighboring active volcano Fuego erupt every few minutes - in the afternoon, during sunset, in the evening, at night, at dawn, before sunrise and after sunrise.

Getting to see the mighty Fuego erupt from such close quarters is definitely the highlight of the Acatenango volcano hike. Check out our Fuego eruptions video for more glimpses of the Fuego eruptions:

Day 2:

We woke up at 4:00 am for hiking from base camp to Acatenango summit to catch the sunrise. Navigating an almost non-existent trail in the darkness of the night with our headlamps, and braving freezing cold, this part of the hike was even more challenging.

But when we reached the top, it was mesmerizing to see the sun rise from behind the horizon of clouds and shower with its light Guatemala's various volcanoes that pierced through the sky.

After the sunrise summit of Acatenango, we returned to the base camp, had a heart breakfast with freshly made pancakes and then started on return hike to the trailhead.

In this video, we hope to bring you on this journey of hiking the Acatenango volcano, an incredible travel experience in Guatemala. Enjoy! :-)

1. El Chiflón
The first stop on our Chiapas road trip was El Chiflón, near the city of Comitán. This is possibly the best place to go in Chiapas because of its otherworldly beauty. El Chiflon had some of the most beautiful waterfalls we have ever seen in our lives.

2. Lagunas de Montebello
Only 85 kilometres, or 53 miles, South from El Chiflon are the Lagunas de Montebello. This national park consists of 59 multi-coloured lakes in a pine forest. It’s a great place to hike, horse-back ride, drive around, and explore the lakes by traditional “balsa” boats.

3. Las Nubes
The next stop on our road trip was Las Nubes. The town and waterfalls are tucked away in the Chiapas jungle and don’t attract as many tourists as the other Chiapas highlights. This is why Las Nubes is truly one of the best places to go in Chiapas. The waterfalls stretch for kilometres and we highly recommend doing the full trail to the various viewpoints.

4. Lacandon jungle
The Lacandon Jungle is the most unique place to go in Chiapas! Not only is this the biggest rainforest in Mexico, but it is also home to the Lacandon people, who are the descendants of the ancient Maya. When the Spanish arrived in Mexico, this group fled to the jungle and survived as a culture by living deep in the rainforest. They were out of contact with the rest of the world until the 20th century.

5. Palenque
Palenque was the next stop on our road trip and one of the most famous places to go in Chiapas. Known for its mighty Mayan temples, this place is one of the best examples of Maya architecture in Mexico. Only 2% of the ruins are uncovered, which means that 98% are still covered by the surrounding land. We went on a 3 hour tour of the ruins and the jungle, which we highly recommend. During the final jungle part you’ll uncover houses of the Mayan people and find unique animals of the area.

6. San cristobal de las Casas
The colonial town of San Cristobal de las Casas is arguably one of the prettiest cities in all of Mexico. Its Historical Centre is filled with gorgeous colourful architecture and wide patios against a mountain backdrop. But besides being charming, this town is also extremely interesting thanks to its ancient past and blend of different cultures.

7. Sumidero Canyon
The Sumidero Canyon was the final stop on our road trip around Chiapas. It’s located right outside the city of Tuxtla Guttierez, and can be explored from the water as well as from the canyon walls. We did a boat ride from Chiapa de Corzo, which takes you through the canyon for 2 to 3 hours.

CENTRAL AMERICA BACKPACKING TRIP | Mexico, Belize & Guatemala - Trailer

I went solo backpacking around Central America for 6 weeks, travelling through Mexico, Belize and Guatemala.

This 3 part documentary series shows the entire backpacking experience.

From the fun activities, beautiful sites, crazy parties, to the exhausting journeys and the good, bad and ugly hostels.

Flying into Cancun, Mexico, I made my way to Tulum to check out the cenotes. Then chilled out at the beautiful Lake Bacalar before crossing the border into Belize.

Caye Caulker island was a great place to chill and party, as well as do some incredible snorkelling. From here I took a 3 day island-hopping boat tour with Ragamuffin tours along the Belize Barrier Reef.

Heading inland I went to San Ignacio, exploring the Caracol ruins by jeep. Then I crossed the border into Guatemala, staying in the beautiful town of Flores to visit the ancient Mayan ruins of Tikal.

Next stop was the beautiful Semuc Champey, stunning waterfalls in the jungle-filled mountains. Then I went to Antigua and got to roast some marsh-mellows on Pacaya volcano.

I then did a 3 day trek from Xela to Lake Atitlan, hiking through cloud forests, corn fields, small villages and staying with local families.

At Lake Atitlan I got to try out horse-riding for the first time before finishing up my trip at El Paredon on the Pacific Coast.

If you want to know what to do in Lake Atitlan 2020 watch our Lake Atitlan tour video. We show you what to see in Santiago Atitlan on Lago Atitlan.

It has a strong indigenous identity and the majority of the atitecos are Tz'utujil Maya. The town's cofradías maintain the syncretic traditions and rituals of Maya Catholicism.

We are leaving San Pedro La Laguna with a boat in the morning. We are passing Volcano San Pedro, Volcano Atitlan and Volcano Toliman on our way to Santiago Lake Atitlan.

Don't miss our Maximon Guatemala visit! Maximón, also called Rilaj Mam the great grandfather, is a Mayan deity and folk saint represented by a dressed up wooden effigy, who smokes cigarettes and drinks alcohol. Maximon Santiago Atitlan likes Quetzalteca, cigarettes, and money.

We also visit Concepcion Ramirez, also known as Doña Chonita. In 1959 her portrait was chosen to feature on the 25 centavo coin.

If you visit Santiago Atitlan in Guatemala you should go on the market days, Friday or Sunday. Santiago Atitlan market is a colourful market which is a must see!
We also explore the indoor market which is mainly a food market, also a must visit place in this amazing Lake Atitlan town.

La Iglesia Santiago Apóstol, Saint James the Apostle Church, is also worth a visit!

Santiago Atitlan has seen some of the worst events of the Guatemalan civil war. We visit a site of a massacre, Parque del La Paz, or Peace Park.
