10 Best place to visit in Horta Portugal

x

Is Horta, Portugal Worth Visiting? (Exploring one of the Azores' most charming seaside cities) ????????

Horta, Azores is Portugal in miniature. This charming seaside city boasts some of the most beautiful squares, mosaic sidewalks, and historic Renaissance-era in the country, albeit 1500 km off the coast of the mainland. If you've never heard of Horta, I'd forgive you; it's a low-key town, free from tourist traps and soulless resorts.

After a great day on the island of Pico, I boarded a fast ferry and headed across the narrow channel to the neighboring island of Faial to explore everything that Horta has to offer. My time here was a bit too short, but I enjoyed exploring its narrow streets, beautiful coves (Praia Porto Pim) and visited its many colonial-era churches. If you ever have the opportunity to visit Horta, you simply must go; there's no better place to experience the best of Portugal in a comparatively low-key and laid back setting.

Farol da Ribeirinha, Faial | Viewpoints | Azores Top 10 Things To Do

Overlooking the canal, the Ribeirinha lighthouse was one of the more important landmarks on the island. It was mentioned in many works of the Portuguese writer Vitorino Nemésio, who wrote the ex-libris of the lighthouse in his work Mau Tempo no Canal. The lighthouse is a square form, covered in white azulejo (tiles); a rectangular base, featuring a central tower.

Construction began during the month of May, 1915 and inaugurated in the winter of 1919 (November 1). Its optic (made from crystal) and lantern (partly red) distinguish it as a unique World Heritage artifact. Following the earthquake of 1998, the building was abandoned due to major cracks and deterioration of the internal structure.

Following the earthquake, which was centered 5 km off the coast of Ponta da Ribeirinha, the lighthouse was left in ruins. A preemptive demolition of the building in 2001 was abandoned following a campaign of the Liga dos Amigos do Farol (the League of Friends of the Lighthouse). Their objective is to preserve and reconstruct the lighthouse.

Moinhos da Graciosa | Viewpoints | Azores Top 10 Things To Do

Moinhos da Graciosa

The windmills are the best representation of the island of Graciosa, a nostalgia from the times gone by in which Graciosa Island was considered the Granary of the Azores, for its vast production of cereals.

The Mó da Praia was one of the last mills to grind grain on the Island, until the date of the death of Mr. Manuel Frutuoso Vasconcelos Moniz (the former owner), on February 18, 2002. It is now restored as a hotel, but has kept the essential features that make this artifact so special.
