HOLLAND: Hoorn, historical city centre & marina

Hoorn is a city (and municipality) in the northwest of the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland, located on the Markermeer.

The Markermeer is a 700 km2 (270 sq mi) lake. It is used as a freshwater reservoir and a buffer against floodwaters and droughts.

Hoorn is well known in the Netherlands for its rich history. The town acquired city rights in 1357 and flourished during the Dutch Golden Age. In this period, Hoorn developed into a prosperous port city, being home to one of the six chambers of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). However, towards the end of the 18th century it started to become increasingly more difficult for Hoorn to keep competing with the nearby city of Amsterdam. Ultimately, it lost its function as port city and became a regional center of trade, mainly serving the smaller villages of West Friesland. Nowadays, Hoorn is a city with modern residential areas and a historic city center.

The Roode Steen ('Red Stone') or Kaasmarkt ('Cheese Market') is the central square of Hoorn. De Roode Steen is a central place for events and catering. The Red Stone is named after a stone on which executions took place. The original stone is in the Westfries Museum, a replica has been installed on the square.

The Waag (building) was built in 1609 by order of Hendrick de Keyser on the Roode Steen square. Presently a grand café has been established there in which many old materials and tools are still on display. The building was the center of the cheese market which was held weekly from the second half of the 17th century. Since June 2007, a (tourist) cheese market is held on the Roode Steen square every Thursday, and in De Waag the cheese is weighed just like in the past.

The Westfries Museum is a museum of regional history (former State College, 1632). The museum has an extensive collection of paintings, silver objects, porcelain, historic firearms, objects of the schutterij and VOC objects. The collection is exhibited in 25 rooms, of which one is a style-room.

De Boterhal is an art center located in the former Sint Jans Gasthuis (1563) on the Kerkplein (square). The Boterhal serves as the home base and exhibition space of the Artists' Association Hoorn. The members of the association organize exhibitions with their own work and that of other promising artists.

The Grote Kerk (church) was build in 1883 and is situated on the Kerkplein (square). The church was closed for worship in 1968 and sold to be converted into a commercial building. The church was bought in 1984 to be converted into shop(s) and apartments. Thirty-six residential apartments have been realized in the building, 18 of which are located between the wooden barrel vault and the roof. The tower is owned by the civil municipality.

The Engeltjesbrug is a wooden bascule bridge between the Korenmarkt and the Bierkade. The Engeltjesbrug is one of the two bridges that connect the artificial island Venidse to the mainland. The bridge was newly built in 1937 on the site of a predecessor. On November 16, 1965, the bridge was listed as a national monument. The bridge was completely restored in 2015, whereby the upper structure was completely removed.

The Hoofdtoren (tower at marina) is one of the last defenses in Hoorn that have been preserved. The tower is named after the nearby Houten Hoofd (Wooden Head) jetty, which was built in 1464.

Oostereiland is an artificial island that was built in the harbor between 1662 and 1668.

The Havenlicht van Hoorn, also called Grote Lantaarn ('Big Lantern'), is a wooden light curb on the Lantaarndijk (dike) on Visserseiland (island).

Visserseiland is an artificial peninsula. The eastern side is located on the Grashaven. The peninsula was built in the 17th century, as was the Oostereiland.

The Hoorn–Medemblik heritage railway, operated by the Museumstoomtram Hoorn Medemblik, is a heritage railway. It runs from Hoorn to Medemblik city, a distance of about 20 km (12.4 mi). The railway is operated as a tourist attraction.

Hoorn - The Netherlands

Holland - Best Places to visit - Amsterdam, Gouda, Leiden, Maastricht, Giethoorn, Hoorn & Oirschot.

Holland - Best Places To Visit.

In this video we would like to tell you a little about the best places to visit in Holland as well as provide some tips on languages, currency, driving, parking, camping and shopping.

Holland is a really interesting country to visit.

Some of the best places to visit in Holland include Amsterdam, Gouda, Leiden, Maastricht, Groningen, Giethoorn, Katwoude, Hoorn, Alblasserdam and Oirschot.

Holland has a population of around 17 million people but has only a small land mass of 41,526 sq. km a large percentage of which is very flat and below sea level.

The official language is Dutch, however most people speak very good English as it is taught from an early age at school.

The currency is the Euro.

Wild camping is forbidden, however, several motorhome friendly municipalities have regulated facilities where overnight parking is allowed.

Ready-made joints, cannabis related products, rolling papers, pipes and bongs can be ordered legally in coffee shops, however we decided to stay on our natural high of just being with each other.

Bicycles can be seen in their millions and the Netherlands has more than 32,000 km of dedicated bicycle paths.

The Dutch are the most prolific travellers of any country we have encountered whilst travelling – whether it be NordKap in the far north of Norway, Sounion on the southern tip of Greece or anywhere in between we always saw the yellow number plates with NL and knew we would be able to speak to them in English and get a smile and help in return.

There are still at least 30 different languages in the EU and Dutch Frisian and English are the main languages spoken.

Most younger people in larger towns and cities across Europe speak English as their second language, however in the rural areas sometimes not a lot of English is spoken, particularly by older people.

There are around 13 different currencies in the EU however the Euro is the main Dutch currency.

Vignettes are not required for driving on the Holland road networks and there are no toll roads except for a couple of tunnels.

The road systems in Holland are good the only problem being that Holland is a very small country with way too many people and way too many cars so the road networks are always crammed with traffic.

Credit cards are accepted widely in Holland, however, some vendors only accept Visa but not Mastercard, or vice versa.

There are different rules regarding “parking” and “camping” – many countries allow “overnight parking” as long as you don't camp there – the definition of “camping” is if you set up anything outside of your vehicle eg tables and chairs, and or BBQ, and or put up your sun awning and or position your vehicle on levelling ramps etc – then that is classified as camping.

Aussie European Tour – Australians Rob and Krys Henshaw tour 28 European countries, travelling around 60,000 km in their LHD Hymer 544 during 2017 and 2018.

To access the blog notes including tips on language, currencies, driving, parking, camping and shopping with videos and photos for every overnight stop on the entire tour through 28 European countries covering in excess of 60,000 km please log on to the website at

Overnight stops included Wild Camping, Aires and Stellplatz and occasionally in camp grounds.

Hoorn beautiful authentic harbour - Holland Holiday

A beautiful old city, about 40 kilometers from Amsterdam, is Hoorn.
In the past it was a succesful trading port situated on the Zuiderzee.

After closing this sea with a 30 kilometer barrier dam the Zuiderzee became a lake, called IJsselmeer.
After the construction of a dam between Enkhuizen and Lelystad the lake south of the dam was called Markermeer.

Today Hoorn is a bustling marina for water sports.

At the end of the afternoon the traditional ships enter the harbour, often with groups that make a trip on the Dutch waters, such as the IJsselmeer, Markermeer and the Wadden Sea.

These old Dutch flat-bottomed ships are called 'De Bruine Vloot', which means 'The Brown Fleet'.
The name refers to the brown sails many of these boats are equipped with.

Did you know that Cape Horn was named after the city of Hoorn?
In the year 1616 explorer Willem Corneliszoon Schouten named the cape after his city of birth.

The old town has lively shopping streets with pleasant terraces.
Like many other towns in the Netherlands Hoorn has a history with cheese. In summer there is a cheese market every week.

We take a look in a cheese shop that has hardly changed for generations.

You can also visit several interesting museums.

The collection of the Westfries Museum shows you the cultural history of the 17th century, the Golden Century.

Museum 20th Century houses an impressive collection of objects from the 20th century that will appeal to both young and old alike!

Or enjoy old masterpieces of poster design in the ‘Affiche Museum’.

Make a trip through time with a historic steam tram from Hoorn to another little harbour, Medemblik. Or a trip in combination with a boat trip to ancient port Enkhuizen.

You will enjoy your stay in Hoorn!

Volendam is a small town in the Netherlands that is well-known for its traditional wooden houses, scenic canals, and Holland's iconic windmills. While there are plenty of things to do in Volendam, here are some of the best attractions:

The Volendam Museum is a great place to learn more about the history and culture of this charming town. The Peter Stuyvesant Museum is also worth a visit - it's home to an extensive collection of maritime artifacts. Volendam is also a great place to go hiking or cycling, thanks to its beautiful countryside and winding paths. And, of course, no trip to Volendam would be complete without a visit to the world-famous windmills!

Volendam is a town in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. It is well known for its traditional wooden houses, its fishing culture, and its Volendammer clothing.

Volendam was settled in the thirteenth century as a small fishing village. The name Volendam is derived from the Dutch words vollen (meaning full) and dam (meaning dam). This refers to the fact that the village was located at the mouth of a canal that was used to store water for fishing.

Volendam grew rapidly in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries as a result of its location on an important trade route between Amsterdam and Zaandam. The town became known for its traditional wooden houses, which were built to withstand the harsh winters in North Holland.

The fishing culture of Volendam also developed during this period. In the early twentieth century, Volendammers began to export their smoked fish around the world. Today, Volendam is still known for its smoked fish products, which include eel, herring, and salmon.

Volendam also has a long tradition of clothing. The Volendammer costume is a type of folk costume that is popular in the Netherlands. It consists of a long dress, a cape, and a hat or cap. The costume is typically worn by women on special occasions such as weddings and christenings.

The history of Volendam is closely tied to its traditions and culture. These traditions are still alive today and attract tourists from all over the world.

Hoorn is well known in the Netherlands for its rich history. The town acquired city rights in 1357 and flourished during the Dutch Golden Age (17th century). In this period, Hoorn developed into a prosperous port city, being home to one of the six chambers of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Towards the end of the eighteenth century, however, it started to become increasingly more difficult for Hoorn to keep competing with nearby Amsterdam. Ultimately, it lost its function as port city and became a regional center of trade, mainly serving the smaller villages of West Friesland. Nowadays, Hoorn is a city with modern residential areas and a historic city center that, due to its proximity to Amsterdam, is sometimes considered to be part of the Randstad metropolitan area. Cape Horn and the Hoorn Islands were both named after this city.
