A visit to Sutton Hoo, Suffolk, England

#53: Still in the UK, we went to Sutton Hoo. The archaeological digsite is a disappointment, but everything else (the walks, the house and the museum) is definitely worth a visit. A bit pricey at £15 per person, though.

Sutton Hoo Suffolk England

Inspired by movie 'The Dig' we went to Sutton Hoo National Trust Site in Suffolk UK.
Sutton Hoo is place where breathtaking discovery was made in 1939. Anglo-Saxon the Great Ship Burial was excavated and new facts about early Anglo-Saxon period were revealed. Little was known about people who lived on England territory in 6/7th centuries because no written records were left. Thus, any found from that period is like a little piece of the whole picture of Anglo-Saxon
England...

Places to see in ( Rochester - UK )

Places to see in ( Rochester - UK )

Rochester is a town and historic city in the unitary authority of Medway in Kent, England. Rochester is at the lowest bridging point of the River Medway about 30 miles from London.

Rochester was for many years a favourite of Charles Dickens, who owned nearby Gads Hill Place, Higham, basing many of his novels on the area. The Diocese of Rochester, the second oldest in England, is centred on Rochester Cathedral and was responsible for the founding of a school, now The King's School in 604 AD, which is recognised as being the second oldest continuously running school in the world.

Rochester Castle, built by Bishop Gundulf of Rochester, has one of the best preserved keeps in either England or France, and during the First Barons' War (1215–1217) in King John's reign, baronial forces captured the castle from Archbishop Stephen Langton and held it against the king, who then besieged it.

Rochester and its neighbours, Chatham and Gillingham, Strood and a number of outlying villages form a single large urban area known as the Medway Towns. These places nowadays make up the Medway Unitary Authority area. It was, until 1998, under the control of Kent County Council and is still part of the ceremonial county of Kent, under the latest Lieutenancies Act.

Rochester lies within the area, known to geologists, as the London Basin. The low-lying Hoo peninsula to the north of the town consists of London Clay, and the alluvium brought down by the two rivers—the Thames and the Medway—whose confluence is in this area. The land rises from the river, and being on the dip slope of the North Downs, this consists of chalk surmounted by the Blackheath Beds of sand and gravel.

Rochester comprises numerous important historic buildings, the most prominent of which are the Guildhall, the Corn Exchange, Restoration House, Eastgate House, as well as Rochester Castle and Rochester Cathedral. Many of the town centre's old buildings date from as early as the 14th century up to the 18th century. The chapel of St Bartholomew's Hospital dates from the ancient priory hospital's foundation in 1078.

A new Huguenot Museum, which includes items from the collections of the French Hospital, was opened in Rochester on 13 May 2015, with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund and individual donations. Since 1980 the city has seen the revival of the historic Rochester Jack-in-the-Green May Day dancing chimney sweeps tradition, which had died out in the early 1900s.

Rochester is on the A2, which crosses the Medway at Rochester Bridge – the route roughly follows the ancient road known as Watling Street. Rochester railway station is on the Chatham Main Line and the North Kent Line. Rochester Airport began in September 1933 when Rochester City Council purchased some land as the site for a municipal airport.

( Rochester - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Rochester . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Rochester - UK

Hoo St Werburgh - Rochester, Kent

Oldfrostig takes a walk around the Kent village of Hoo St Werburgh, which is situated in the Rochester area not far from the Thames Estuary. When we visited the village was readying itself for the Queen’s platinum jubilee with much bunting visible.
The video starts at the parish church which incorporates a Commonwealth war grave and moves on past the Chequers public house where there are a number of statuettes representing the fallen from the wars. These representations are know as the ‘there not there’ so that those who gave their life’s in defence of the Nation are remembered.
We then move along to the village centre where there is another pub called the Five Bells, along with a butchers, bakers but not candle stick makers! There are plenty of takeaways in the village providing a variety of differing cuisines.
There was a surprising amount there for such a small place and we felt it was a very pleasant looking village and worth a visit if you’re in the area. It’s not far from Haven’s Allhallows Leisure Park, so anyone visiting that might want to take a look if you fancy a trip out.

London British Museum, Amazing & Best Tourist Attractions of London, England,UK

London British Museum, Amazing & Best Tourist Attractions of London, England,UK. Traveling:

The Sutton Hoo Burial exhibit is still very ornate and it is a wonderful piece to check out. The helmet has several hidden images on it like in one of those children's books. There are over five thousand unique pieces that are displayed that can make the viewer truly grasp what life was like in the middle of the 18th century all the way up to the beginning of the 19th century. The British Museum was founded by an Act of Parliament and the piece of paper that the Act was transcribed on can be seen in George the III's library that was restored. It dates back all the way to the early 7th century. Make sure to find the best time that different collections are on display, because not all of them will be displayed every single day. You can find out more about exhibit schedules on the British Museum's website. The museum tries to mix it up a little because they have to many artifacts and not enough display space.
