Frederick John Horniman, was a tea trader in the 19th century and began collecting objects, specimens and artefacts 'illustrating natural history and the arts and handicrafts of various peoples of the world' from around 1860. He wanted to 'bring the world to Forest Hill' and educate and enrich the lives of the local community who didn't have the chance or money to go travelling and see these amazing things.
He travelled to Egypt, Sri Lanka, Burma, China, Japan, Canada and the United States collecting objects. Mr Horniman’s interest as a collector was well known and many travellers approached him with specimens and curiosities.
By the end of the century, he had accumulated so much stuff that he gave up the whole house to the collections'.
His wife said 'either the collection goes or we do' so the family moved to Surrey Mount the grounds of which adjoined those of the former residence.

The places included in this list are:
- Visit Östermalmshallen, a lovely food market
- Explore the island of Långholmen, which used to be a prison island
- Attend open sessions at Parliament - or just enjoy the view
- Kungsträdgården has events and shows and lots of things to enjoy - all for free
- The island of Royal Djurgården is gorgeous. Don't miss the Rosendal Castle!
- See the world's longest art gallery...in the form of the Stockholm subway art
- Check out all the free museums at Skeppsholmen, such as the Museum of Modern Art. Or just walk around and see all the historical boats anchored here
- Marvel at the 18th century Drottningholm Castle and its surrounding garden
- Pay a visit to the Medieval Museum...without paying anything at all
- And finally, find out all there is to see in Stockholm Old Town. Such as Sweden's smallest public monument, or Sweden's oldest public toilet

Road Trips in La Crosse County, WI
Up for a road trip? Enjoy beautiful scenery, access to excellent hiking, fishing, and boating, rugged bluffs, and of course the picturesque Mississippi River along the Wisconsin Great River Road. More at
This 100-mile loop goes north from La Crosse to quaint Buffalo City, WI, retraces its path back south to Highway 54, where you cross the Mississippi into Winona, MN, then heads south on Highway 61, along Minnesota’s side of the river. Re-cross the Mississippi in La Crescent and head directly back into downtown La Crosse. There’s plenty to see and do along the way, as the Great River Road takes you past Perrot State Park and Elmaro Vineyard near Trempeleau, the Monarch Public House and Seven Hawks Vineyards in Fountain City, and numerous access points to the La Crosse River State Trail and Great River State Trail.
