America's Most Affordable Place to Live! Driving and Walking Tour of Hickory NC

Hickory NC is also one of the nicest places to live in the United States. I've been blessed to live nearby Hickory for the last 35 years. All the small cities and towns in the Catawba Valley and WNC Foothills are really special, with lots of kind and hard-working people. Come along with me on this partial driving and partial walking tour of Hickory. We'll see the downtown, some of the primary shopping areas, the motor mile, main connector streets and thoroughfares. I'll do my best to get some additional regions in coming months. And yes this is a pretty affordable area (so far).

Top 5 Attractions in North Carolina | USA

North Carolina's coast boasts more than 300 miles of barrier island beaches, romantic lighthouses, idyllic small towns, and national seashores. Spring is an appealing time to hike the Appalachian Trail or bike at Rocky Knob Mountain Bike Park. Fall lures travelers to the spectacular colors along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Cities like Raleigh, Durham, Winston-Salem, and Charlotte are some of the best places to go in North Carolina for city explorers. With the Atlantic Ocean to the east, North Carolina features plenty of shorelines for visitors to enjoy with water activities, sunbathing, or simply relaxing on the beach. The state's long history means that you can find important historic sites from the Revolutionary and Civil Wars.

The Great Smoky Mountains is America’s most visited National Park. Take one trip to the park and you’ll immediately see why. Great Smoky Mountains is located on the North Carolina-Tennessee border. It’s home to some of the most diverse groups of plants and wildlife in the world.

Biltmore Estate, a historic 250-room French Renaissance chateau that was built by George Vanderbilt in the 1890’s, has been a favorite for tourists since it was opened to the public in 1930. The amazement of the home’s sheer size is matched only by the intricate details inside and the features that seem way ahead of their time, like the indoor pool and private bowling alley. With over four acres of total floor space, the home features 35 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms, 65 fireplaces, a large banquet hall and a library that is home to 10,000 volumes.

Nicknamed America's favorite drive, the 469-mile Blue Ridge Parkway was designed by landscape architect Stanley Abbott whose vision was to create a road that was far more than just a way to get from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina to the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, with its scenic hiking trails. The drive itself has incredible views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the surrounding landscape, and the road is popular with motorcyclists and bicyclists for its endless scenery.

The crown jewel of the North Carolina State Parks, Chimney Rock is a great spot to visit. Chimney Rock State Park represents the best of the North Carolina mountains in one place. Surrounded by the towering cliffs of Hickory Nut Gorge, the Park offers some of the most amazing views found anywhere in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Not far from the cities of the Triad area, off the four-lane highways, there's another North Carolina to be discovered: sheer cliffs and peaks of bare rock, quiet forests, and cascading waterfalls, with views of the Piedmont plateau that stretch for miles. Hike the trails of Hanging Rock State Park and let nature put life's hectic pace in perspective

Traveled To Hickory, NC: One of The Most Beautiful Corners in America

Today I traveled to Hickory in North Carolina and wanted to show you perhaps one of the most beautiful places in the entered United States.

This is the view of Lake Hickory from Moore's Ferry neighborhood.

Lake Hickory was created on the Catawba River in 1927 with the completion of the Oxford Dam 11 miles (18 km) northeast of Hickory. The dam parallels the NC Highway 16 bridge over the Catawba River between Interstate 40 and Taylorsville. It is 122 feet (37 m) high, with an overall length of 1,200 feet (370 m). The spillway section of the dam is 550 feet (170 m) long.

Lake Hickory was named after the City of Hickory and runs along its northern edge.

Hello from Hip Hickory: Drive and Walk-Thru

You will be in for pleasant surprises when you visit Hickory. It ranks as the third best place to live in NC, the most affordable nice place to live in the US; there are so many pro's. People love to come and retire here. Check out the downtown with us.

Hickory - North Carolina - Downtown Drive

Sunday afternoon drive around the downtown and surrounding areas of Hickory, NC. Originally recorded March 2020.

Hickory by the Numbers (2010 Census):
City Population: 40,010
City Area: 29.8 sq mi
Metro Population (Hickory-Lenoir-Morganton): 365,497

From Wikipedia:
Hickory is a city located primarily in Catawba County, with formal boundaries extending into Burke and Caldwell counties. The city lies in the U.S. state of North Carolina. Hickory's population at the 2010 census was 40,010 (primarily in Catawba County), with an estimated population in 2018 of 40,925. Hickory is the principal city in the Hickory–Lenoir–Morganton MSA, in which the population at the 2010 census was 365,497 and is located just northwest of the Charlotte–Concord Combined Statistical Area.

In the 1850s, under a huge hickory tree, Henry Robinson built a tavern of logs.[citation needed] The city of Hickory Tavern co-founded by Dolph Shuford, was established in 1863, and the name was eventually changed to the city of Hickory in 1873.

The first train operated in the city of Hickory Tavern in 1859. The first lot was sold to Henry Link for $45.00 in 1858. His house is now known as The 1859 Cafe, a restaurant (closed in 2011). The community of Hickory was the first for many things in North Carolina, including the council-manager form of government it adopted in 1913. Hickory was also one of the first towns to install electric lights in 1888 and a complete sewerage system in 1904.

In 1868, Dr. Jeremiah Ingold, pastor of the German Reformed Grace Charge, established Hickory's first school, the Free Academy.

In 1891, Lenoir–Rhyne University (then Highland Academy) was founded by four Lutheran pastors with 12 initial students.

Hickory is home to one of the oldest furniture manufacturers in the United States that is still located and operated on the original site. Hickory White, formerly known as Hickory Manufacturing Company, was built in 1902 and has been in continuous operation ever since. During World War II, the factory made ammunition boxes for the U.S. military instead of furniture.

Hickory was known in the years after World War II for the Miracle of Hickory. In 1944 the area around Hickory (the Catawba Valley) became the center of one of the worst outbreaks of polio ever recorded. Residents who were then children recall summers of not being allowed to play outside or visit friends for fear of contracting the disease. Since local facilities were inadequate to treat the victims, the citizens of Hickory and the March of Dimes decided to build a hospital to care for the children of the region. From the time the decision was made until equipment, doctors, and patients were in a new facility, took less than 54 hours. Several more buildings were quickly added. A Red Cross official on the scene praised the project as the most outstanding example of cooperative effort he has ever seen.[

The city also came to national attention when the remains of Zahra Baker were found leading to a police investigation where Zahra's stepmother, Elise Baker, was found guilty of second-degree murder. The Zahra Baker All Children's playground, located in Kiwanis Park, is named in her honor.
