Places to see in ( Hexham - UK )

Places to see in ( Hexham - UK )

Hexham is a market town and civil parish in Northumberland, England, south of the River Tyne, and was the administrative centre for the Tynedale district from 1974 to 2009. Smaller towns and villages around Hexham include Corbridge, Riding Mill, Stocksfield and Wylam to the east, Acomb and Bellingham to the north, Allendale to the south and Haydon Bridge, Bardon Mill and Haltwhistle to the west. Newcastle upon Tyne is about 25 miles (40 km) to the east.

Hexham Abbey originated as a monastery founded by Wilfrid in 674. The crypt of the original monastery survives, and incorporates many stones taken from nearby Roman ruins, probably Corbridge or Hadrian's Wall. The current Hexham Abbey dates largely from the 11th century onward, but was significantly rebuilt in the 19th century. Other notable buildings in the town include the Moot Hall, the covered market, and the Old Gaol.

Hexham's architectural landscape is dominated by Hexham Abbey. The current church largely dates from c. 1170–1250, in the Early English Gothic style of architecture. The choir, north and south transepts and the cloisters, where canons studied and meditated, date from this period. The east end was rebuilt in 1860. The abbey stands at the west end of the market place, which is home to the Shambles, a Grade II* covered market built in 1766 by Sir Walter Blackett.

At the east end of the market place stands the Moot Hall, a c15 gatehouse that was part of the defences of the town. The Moot Hall is a Grade I listed building, and was used as a courthouse until 1838. The Old Gaol, behind the Moot Hall on Hallgates, was one of the first purpose-built jails in England. It was built between 1330 and 1333 and is a Grade I listed Scheduled Monument. Hexham Library can be found in the Queen's Hall. It contains the Brough Local Studies Collection which is the second-largest local history collection in the county.

Hexham is bypassed to the north by the A69 road, linking it with Carlisle to the west and Newcastle to the east, which bypasses the original route, the A695. The town is served by Hexham railway station on the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway, also known as the Tyne Valley Line. The line — part of the UK publicly owned national rail network — was opened in 1838, and links the city of Newcastle upon Tyne in Tyne and Wear with Carlisle in Cumbria. The line follows the course of the River Tyne through Northumberland.

( Hexham - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Hexham . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Hexham - UK

Top 10 Things To Do in Northumberland

My Top 10 Things To Do in Northumberland! In this video, we are exploring the Northumberland National Park, Northumberland Coast AONB and more! your ultimate guide for what to do in Northumberland!

Northumberland is an incredible place, packed full of more castles than any other county in the world, the least dense population of any county in England, and home to some of the most wild, immense and rugged landscapes I've ever seen in England. All these things make Northumberland the perfect place to explore around!

Hadrians Wall Video: Coming Soon (Sunday 15th August)

Top 10 list (in no particular order)

1. Bamburgh Castle - 0:39
Having a history dating back to the year 547, this castle is pretty breathtaking! Epic views from the ramparts and being beautifully renovated by William Armstrong make Bamburgh castle a great place to explore

2. Dunstanburgh Castle - 1:54
Located only 9 miles south of Bamburgh castle, this castle was much less fortunate and is left in ruins today, but the setting is no less epic. there is a 1-mile coastal walk from the town of Craster to access this castle as there is no parking nearby.

3/4/5. The Holy Island of Lindisfarne - 2:39
Lindisfarne Island is packed with things to do but is only accessible at low tide due to the causeway being submerged and the island getting cut off from the mainland. Firstly you can visit Lindisfarne Castle (3:09), you can also see the Boatsheds made from upturned boat hulls, walk along the coastline to the Holy Island War Memorial, explore Lindisfarne Priory, and if it's low tide walk out to St. Cuthberts Island (4:07). we visited Lindisfarne in the evening and it's a great place to catch a sunset.

6. Hadrians Wall - 4:50
Dating all the way back to 122 AD, built by the Roman emperor Hadrian, this wall is 73 miles long and stretches the whole breadth of England. we hiked a 3-mile stretch from Steel Rigg Car Park, Vis Sycamore Gap to Housesteads Roman Fort. Sycamore Gap is the most photographed tree in England and Housesteads fort is the most well preserved roman for on Hadrian's wall! this 3-mile stretch goes through Northumberland National Park and is a great hike!

7. Cragside - 6:10
Our favourite thing to do in Northumberland, Cragside is the first house in the world to be powered by hydroelectricity. As well as this there are so many grounds full of picture-perfect, straight out of a fantasy film scenery that you can explore to your heart's content. Definitely, a must-visit on your holiday in Northumberland!

8. Alnwick - 7:43
home to the famous Alnwick Castle, famous for its many uses as Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films. But the town of Alnwick is a great place in itself, make sure you head down to Barter Books, a second-hand bookstore housed in the old Victorian railway station of Alnwick!

9. Newcastle upon Tyne - 8:24
Technically not in the county of Northumberland but Newcastle was the place we stayed during our trip to Northumberland, full of some really interesting architecture and great nightlife!

10. The Angel of The North - 8:47
Located in Gateshead just south of Newcastle, this statue was designed by Antony Gormley in 1998 and is considered an icon of England! Overlooking the A1 and a great place to relax and watch the sunset!

Top places to visit in Northumberland | Beautiful UK locations to visit

Northumberland is a stunningly beautiful county, but often overlooked. It has some of the best coastline in England, steeped in heritage with coastal castles, offshore islands home to thousands of seabirds, inland woodlands and the largest reservoir in England which is home to several Osprey. These are just six of my favourite places to visit but there are many more...

Hexham Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Northumberland, and around 20 miles west of Newcastle, is the town of Hexham.

The town's history dates from 674 AD when Wilfred, Bishop of York founded a monastery in the area. In the 9th century, Hexham was plundered by the Danes who destroyed most of the town including the abbey. In the 12th century the abbey was rebuilt, and has stood at the town centre ever since.

Due to its relative proximity to the Anglo-Scottish border, Hexham was subject to multiple attacks from the Scots during the medieval era. In 1138 King David I of Scotland launched an attack on the town. Richard of Hexham described the attackers as an execrable army, savager than any race of heathen yielding honour to neither God nor man. In 1296 Scottish raiders set fire to the priory, and one year later in 1297, William Wallace (a.k.a. Braveheart) attacked the priory again, destroying what remained after the 1296 raid. In 1312 Robert the Bruce demanded and received £2,000 from the town and monastery to spare another attack from the Scots. And in 1346 the priory was once again sacked by Scottish raiders led by King David II.

In 1464 the Battle of Hexham took place during the Wars of the Roses. The Yorkists scored a decisive victory over the Lancastrians, allowing them to gradually gain control of northern England. The Lancastrian commander, the Duke of Somerset, was subsequently executed in Hexham market place.

Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, Hexham was a centre of the leather trade, particularly renowned for making gloves known as Hexham Tans. At its height, over a thousand people were employed in the leather industry in the town.

Today, Hexham is a popular town as a base for hikers in particular, with Northumberland National Park and the North Pennines situated on either side of the town, north and south respectively. The River Tyne runs just north of the town centre and Hexham Racecourse lies to the southwest for horse racing fans.

Famous people from Hexham include Peter Beardsley, Robson Green and Pete Doherty.

On the 24th of November 2021, Hexham was named the happiest place to live in Britain according to Rightmove's happy at home index which asks more than 21,000 people across the country how they feel about where they live.

Section 3: Hexham to Ladycross
In this section we start by exploring some of the sites in Hexham. The Old Gaol, England's oldest purpose built prison, the moot hall, and the Abbey with its Anglo-Saxon crypt. We leave Hexham and head to the pub... The Dilston Inn; where they brew their own excellent beer. From here we pass the remains of Dukesfield Lead Smelt Works, at the time when it first opened it would've been one of the largest such sites in the country; now just two arches and a wheel housing remain. Passing the remains of another old smelt works we make our way to Ladycross Quarry; thus ending section 3.

This is a shorter walk after the 16 miles from the previous walk and fewer but equally spectacular points of interest as we move away from the Tyne Valley and into the wilds of Southeast Northumberland.

Please subscribe so that you don't miss any of the next 49+ walks.

Escape to Hexham's Enchanting Beauty | 4K Walking Tour

Hexham town and the surrounding countryside is very picturesque and contains a wealth of interesting features, buildings and landscapes to explore.

Hexham has an excellent range of independent shops to explore that are totally unique to the town.

Our annual Happy at Home Index reveals that residents of historic Hexham are the happiest, based on factors including the friendliness of their neighbours, its sense of belonging, the quality of the town's local amenities, and its access to open space.

Hexham Abbey is one of the earliest seats of Christianity in England. Since its beginning, it has witnessed periods of immense turmoil and change, across the region and within the English Church itself. Many of these are reflected in the very fabric of the building we see today.
