Introducing Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

Founded in 1741 by Moravian settlers and nicknamed the “Christmas City”, Bethlehem Pa., once held a world-wide reputation for its steel manufacturing. Today the town is well into a cultural and economic leadership position in the Lehigh Valley. Home to Lehigh University and Moravian College, the city also has seen a growth in restaurants, art galleries and shopping in its historic district, South Side and in the Wind Creek Casino complex. Wind Creek is a casino with slot machines and table games, restaurants, hotels and nightclubs. The facility has expanded as more buildings that formerly belonged to Bethlehem Steel are either converted to new use or torn down to make way for new construction. The Wind Creek Event Center draws top-name musical acts throughout the year. The residential neighborhoods closest to this new complex are Historic Bethlehem and Saucon Valley, as well as Fountain Hill. Redevelopment along E. Fourth Street from the casino complex through to the border with Hellertown has changed the corridor from one of empty buildings to new business park campuses and even a greenway that runs from the start of the South Side all the way to Hellertown.

Bethlehem is also home to Musikfest, an annual celebration of music with free performances taking place throughout the historic district and at other nearby venues. Each year’s event draws about 1,000,000 visitors.

The Christmas season is celebrated in style in Bethlehem’s charming historic district, where a vibrant Main Street is anchored by 18th-century Moravian settler buildings and historic Hotel Bethlehem and lined with independently-owned shops and restaurants. The surrounding residential area presents streetscapes with 18th- and 19th-century homes tastefully restored. Special events take place throughout December, including Christkindlmarkt, a German-inspired holiday shopping area that now sets up at the casino complex. Ring in the New Year as a giant Peep drops (Just Born candy, maker of Peeps and other sweets, is headquartered in Bethlehem).

Major employers in Bethlehem include St. Luke's Hospital, Lehigh University, B. Braun Medical, Just Born, Dun & Bradstreet, Moravian College, Cigars International and others.

INCREDIBLE CASTLE House in PA TOUR | Fonthill Castle: Doylestown, Pennsylvania

Welcome to our tour of Fonthill Castle in Doylestown, Pennsylvania! This amazing home is made entirely out of concrete and has elaborate tiles and mosaics in each room. In this travel vlog, we'll share the history of this castle house and the man who designed it all! Visiting Fonthill is one of the most unique things to do in Pennsylvania!

Fonthill Castle is a magnificent historic home just an hour outside of Philadelphia. This is a great place to tour, if you're looking for a unique day trip from Philadelphia! It's one of the few castles in Pennsylvania and is not your typical Victorian home.

A ceramist named Henry Chapman Mercer built this home in the early 1900s as an experiment to see if he could build a house made out of concrete. He then hand-placed each of his tiles inside his home, creating amazing mosaics! Mercer made most of his tiles at the Moravian Pottery & Tile Works, which is next to Fonthill in Bucks County, PA.

In this vlog, we'll explain how this castle house was constructed. It took four years to build this castle in Pennsylvania. The crew who built the home is not what you would expect!

We took a guided tour of Fonthill Castle and got our tickets through the Mercer Museum. Although the home has 44 rooms, we only toured a handful of its rooms. However, the rooms got more and more unique as the tour continued!

We started with the library, where Mercer kept most of his collection of over 6,000 books! Not only did he read all of those books but he also personally annotated most of them.

There's a room in the house called the saloon. Not only is this room eccentric but it also has some of the oldest tiles that Mercer collected from around the world! Henry Mercer was a big fan of Christopher Columbus. He was such a big fan that he dedicated a whole room to Columbus and filled the ceiling with fascinating tiles that depict Columbus' journey to the New World. The Columbus Room was definitely a highlight for us!

Mercer put lots of Easter eggs in his castle house that pay homage to the people (and pets) that he loved. One example of this is several of the EL tiles around the home that honor his Aunt Elizabeth, who helped finance Mercer's dream home.

Walking the grounds of Fonthill Castle truly felt like we were exploring a European castle! You should add Fonthill to your list of must-see places in Pennsylvania!

What did you like the most about Fonthill? Let us know in the comments!

Allentown State Hospital 10/17/2020 Currently Under Demolition

Since a movie was filmed here I thought that I'd cut in some clips from the movie along with my own video. Sad that they're tearing down this masterpiece of a building ~ estimated 1 million dollars in today's money in marble work in just the lobby area alone. Whatever building takes it's place in the future you can be sure that it won't be built to the same standards as this 108 year old structure. A protest and petition tried to save this historic site but demolition has started. Film location of the movie Glass (2019) starring James McAvoy, Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, Anya Taylor-Joy.

Allentown State Hospital is a 108 year old former psychiatric hospital and has been permanently closed since 2010 and is currently under demolition to be completed sometime in 2021 .

Founded: October 3, 1912
Closed: Dec. 17, 2010
Demolition began: 2020

Bethlehem is an American city along the Lehigh River, split between both Northampton and Lehigh counties in the Lehigh Valley region of eastern Pennsylvania. As of the 2020 census, Bethlehem had a total population of 75,781, making it the eighth largest city in Pennsylvania. Of this, 55,639 were in Northampton County and 19,343 were in Lehigh County.

Bethlehem lies in the center of the Lehigh Valley, a metropolitan region of 731 sq mi (1,890 km2) with a population of 861,899 people as of the 2020 census, making it Pennsylvania's third most populous metropolitan area and the 68th most populated metropolitan area in the U.S. Smaller than Allentown but larger than Easton, Bethlehem is the Lehigh Valley's second most populous city.

There are four sections to Bethlehem: central Bethlehem, the south side, the east side, and the west side. Each of these sections blossomed at different times in the city's development and each contains areas recognized under the National Register of Historic Places. ZIP codes that use the address Bethlehem totaled 116,000 in population in 2000. These ZIP Codes include Bethlehem Township and Hanover Township.

The Norfolk Southern Railway's Lehigh Line (formerly the main line of the Lehigh Valley Railroad) runs through Bethlehem heading east to Easton and across the Delaware River to Phillipsburg, New Jersey. The Norfolk Southern Railway's Reading Line runs through Bethlehem and west to Allentown and Reading.

Bethlehem has a long historical relationship with the celebration of Christmas. The city was christened as Bethlehem on Christmas Eve 1741 by Nicolaus Zinzendorf, a Moravian bishop. In 1747, Bethlehem was the first U.S. city to feature a decorated Christmas tree. On December 7, 1937, at a grand ceremony during the Great Depression, the city adopted the nickname Christmas City USA in a large ceremony. It is one of several Lehigh Valley locations, including Emmaus, Egypt, and Allentown's Jordan Creek, whose names were inspired by locations referenced in the Bible. The Lehigh River, a 109-mile-long (175 km) tributary of the Delaware River, flows through the city.

Bethlehem borders Allentown to its west and is 48 miles (77 km) north of Philadelphia and 72 miles (116 km) west of New York City.

--------------------------------------------------
Allentown (Pennsylvania Dutch: Allenschteddel, Allenschtadt, or Ellsdaun) is a city in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. The city had a population of 125,845 as of the 2020 census. It is the fastest-growing major city in Pennsylvania, the largest city in the Lehigh Valley metropolitan area, and Pennsylvania's third largest city, behind only Philadelphia and Pittsburgh in total population. Allentown was founded in 1762 and is the county seat of Lehigh County.

Located on the Lehigh River, Allentown is the largest of three adjacent cities (Allentown, Bethlehem, and Easton) in Lehigh and Northampton counties that join with Carbon County in Pennsylvania's Coal Region and Warren County in northwest New Jersey to form the Lehigh Valley metropolitan area. Allentown is approximately 59 miles (95 km) north-northwest of Philadelphia and 93 miles (150 km) west of New York City.
