It is the capital and largest city of the East Flanders province, and the third largest in the country, exceeded in size only by Brussels and Antwerp.[2] It is a port and university city.
The city originally started as a settlement at the confluence of the Rivers Scheldt and Leie and in the Late Middle Ages became one of the largest and richest cities of northern Europe, with some 50,000 people in 1300.
The municipality comprises the city of Ghent proper and the surrounding suburbs of Afsnee, Desteldonk, Drongen, Gentbrugge, Ledeberg, Mariakerke, Mendonk, Oostakker, Sint-Amandsberg, Sint-Denijs-Westrem, Sint-Kruis-Winkel, Wondelgem and Zwijnaarde. Afgelopen weekend ging ik (alweer) spontaan naar België voor een feestje. Deze keer was het Extrema Outdoor, ook wel bekend als 'XO'! Het festival vond plaats in Houthalen-Helchteren, wat zo'n twee uur rijden van Amsterdam af ligt. We gingen een dagje weg met de auto op de zaterdag. Het evenement zelf duurde van vrijdag t/m maandag en had daarom ook een camping. Meer informatie over het festival kan je vinden in de beoordeling op mijn eigen blog (zie onderstaande link). Mit dem E Bike in den Baumwipfeln der belgischen Provinz Limburg
Start und Ziel unserer Tour lagen - wie man unschwer anhand der vielen abgebildeten Fahnen auf den Fotos und im Video erkennen kann - in Belgien. Und zwar in Helchteren, welches Nord-westlich von Genk liegt und mit dem Auto aus Willich in etwas über einer Stunde Fahrtzeit erreichbar war.
Auf dem Tagesprogramm standen rund 130 Kilometer Strecke durch eine uns beiden gänzlich noch unbekannte Gegend. Und einem Komoot-Highlight welches da hieß Fietsen door de Bomen. Oje, meine Sprachkenntnisse: ist das Niederländisch? Vielleicht kann mir da jemand helfen? Ich habe als Übersetzung im Netz Radeln durch die Bäume gefunden. Aber dazu gleich mehr.

Op mijn man zijn 74 ste verjaardag vandaag trokken we er een dagje op uit. Vandaag trokken we naar Vilvoorde, vandaar naar de luchthaven in Zaventem, dan naar Merchtem en terug huiswaarts.
