When we visit cities across Europe, we usually stop in to see the old churches, not because we’re religious, but rather because historically, the churches of Europe were the recipients of the funds allotted for the commissioning of art and architecture. And, in our travels we’ve had the opportunity to visit a number of historically significant churches including the Duomo di Firenze and the Duomo di Siena in Italy. But, on a recent trip to Amsterdam, we stumbled upon a somewhat unusual and very unique church, a secret church in an attic, which is now the Museum Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder, or the Museum of Our Lord in the Attic.

Things to do in Amsterdam | Canal House Museum | June 2017 | Het Grachtenhuis
We love to find the offbeat or alternative things when we travel and on our recent trip to Amsterdam happened upon the Canal House Museum or Het Grachtenhuis as it is called in Dutch.
It is 12 EURO per adult and worth it.
The exhibition is very advanced (we didn't read very much at all) and you can really get a feel for the lift and times of Amsterdam, the development of the canal systems and the challenges that they have overcome to build the city.
I would recommend at least an hour to an hour and a half for your visit as there is plenty to see.
In this video, I share a brief tour of the museum to whet your appetite and inspire you to take a visit too.
BONUS: It is much quieter than a lot of the well known museums, so you can get up close with the exhibits, enter without queuing and actually enjoy the experience for as long as you like.

The Netherlands borders the North Sea.
In the north there are 5 inhabitant wadden islands.
The Wadden Sea is UNESCO world heritage.
Before 1927 there was a large sea in the middle of the country, the Zuiderzee. After the construction of a 30 kilometer barrier dam, the 'Afsluitdijk’, it became a freshwater lake. The name was changed to IJsselmeer.
Major rivers Rhine and Meuse flow through the Netherlands to the North Sea.
All this water together and the fact that the most of The Netherlands is below sea level, is a serious threat to the Dutch population.

The Heusden Castle dates back to the 12th century. Near this castle, the present town of Heusden developed. In the year 1210 a church was mentioned. Heusden was on the strategic boundary between the Duchy of Brabant, the county of Holland and the Duchy of Gelre, while the county of Kleef initially had rights. As a result, Heusden's political situation was unclear. Heusden was taken in 1279 by Duke Jan I of Brabant, and this is considered to be the beginning of Brabant influence, although there were already shootings between the three power blocks.
