Amazing Things to Do in Ålesund & Top Ålesund Attractions

Discover with us the most amazing things to do in Ålesund & Top Ålesund attractions. Thanks to its proximity to fjords and mountains as well as well-preserved Art Nouveau architecture, Ålesund is considered the most beautiful town in Norway.
Ålesund ‘s Art Nouveau architecture is a result of a great fire which took place in January 1904 when the entire town was destroyed. Between 1904 and 1907 Ålesund was rebuilt in the Art Nouveau style by 20 master builders and 30 Norwegian architects drawing inspiration from all over Europe.
One of the finest examples of the town’s Art Nouveau style architecture is Ålesund Church completed in 1909. This popular place for wedding ceremonies was built out of concrete and Norwegian marble. It can seat around 800 people and inside you can admire beautiful frescoes and stained-glass windows. The 64-tunes organ belongs to the largest in Norway and the glass gable windows behind it were a gift from the German Kaiser Wilhelm II.
If you like hiking, walk 418 steps up from the Town Park or go by car or take the City Train up to Aksla Mountain.
From Aksla viewpoint you will be rewarded with a panoramic view of the beautiful town center, the archipelago, and the amazing mountains. Do you wander how people used to live in earlier times? Visit Sunnmøre Museum where you can find 55 old houses. A walk through this open-air museum is like a journey through the centuries.
Additionally, visit the Atlantic Sea-Park which belongs to the largest saltwater aquariums in Scandinavia. This family attraction includes 11 aquariums and feeding of fish in 4 million liter Atlantic tank is only one of its many attractions. This tank is a home to different fish species such as cod, halibut, catfish and skate.
Do not miss iconic red and white Alnes Lighthouse completed in 1876. It is located only 30 minutes from Ålesund and you can climb it up and enjoy stunning views of the ocean and coastline
If you visit this lighthouse in winter and you are lucky enough, you can see Aurora Borealis dancing over this structure which is still operational.

Haugesund, Norway - Our Day in Port

Cruising Norway and docked in pretty Haugesund. This was a different experience from the Fjords we had been used to. The town is culturally important and famed to be the seat of Viking kings with Harald I Fairhair reputed to have become the 1st king of all Norway by winning a battle here. Whilst this is celebrated the town is a modern coastal town with a working port. There is a lovely vibe of culture and art and a very relaxed air with some fantastic bars and cafes. It’s quite small though and before long you’ve explored the main town area. There is however a gorgeous rugged coastline to explore which is well served with marked footpaths. If you are able to these paths are worthy of your time and you are rewarded with some stunning coastal views.

Haugesund, Norway

Haugesund is a municipality on the North Sea in Rogaland county, Norway.
THE viking destination of Fjord Norway, and a region full of contrasts

Haugesund the home of the Vikings | Norway ????????

Haugesund, Norway, is carved into the southwest of the country's marvelous fjord coastline, between the larger cities of Stavanger and Bergen.

Our Savior's Church was designed by Architect Einar Halleland. The building is constructed in red-facing brick and in a New-Gotic, historistic style.

Experience Norway's national monument Haraldshaugen, slightly north of Haugesund City Centre. This was erected during the millennial celebration of Norway's unification into one kingdom under the rule of King Harald Fairhair.

Then there are a variety of shops and a beautiful waterfront. A truly beautiful place to visit.

HAUGESUND Norway - But Is This The End With P&O Cruises?

From Viking Kings To Marilyn Monroe Onboard P&O Britannia.
P&O Britannia arrives in Haugesund, Norway on the return leg of our Norwegian Fjord Cruise.
Haugesund Norway the home of Viking Kings as well as the father of Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe was born Marilyn Monroe, Norma Jeane Mortenson.

In the 10th century, the area around Haugesund was home to Harald Fairhair, the first king of Norway. He is thought to be buried under a mound at Haugar by the Strait of Karmsund near Haugesund.

You can’t trust the weather in Norway, the weather forecast wasn’t good but as you can see, we did have blue skies and sun. We made the most of the good weather and walked the coastal path to the Kvalen lighthouse.

After Haugesund, it was back on the Britannia to Southampton but don’t forget to subscribe to see our next cruise coming soon

This morning we woke to find us docking in the little village of Olden.

We docked at 9am and our departure was planned for 5pm.

Come along with us as we show you how we spent our day in this port and visiting Europes largest glacier. There really is so much natural beauty in this part of the world and the views we found simply breathtaking that no picture could ever do it justice.

One thing we will never forget about this village is the hospitality of its locals and the send off we got was overwhelming.

Haraldshaugen (Haraldstøtta) | Haugesund Norway

Haraldshaugen (Norwegian: Riksmonumentet Haraldshaugen) is a national monument in Haugesund, Norway. The monument was erected during the millennial celebration of Norway's unification into one kingdom under the rule of King Harald Fairhair (Norwegian: Harald Hårfagre).[1] [2]

Haraldshaugen was unveiled on July 18, 1872 by Crown Prince Oscar (later King Oscar II of Sweden) in connection with the one thousand year anniversary of the Battle of Hafrsfjord. The monument is designed by Norwegian architect Christian Christie. Norwegian national poet, Ivar Aasen, wrote a poem entitled Haraldshaugen to commemorate the event.[3][4] The monument was opposed by Norway's political left, which questioned the merits of celebrating a figure whom they viewed as a brutal, authoritarian conqueror.[5]

Haraldshaugen is located in the northern suburbs of Haugesund. The monument consists of a large mound surrounded by a granite memorial stones with 29 smaller stones, one from each of the historic counties of Norway. At the top of the mound stands a 17m high granite main obelisk, with four bronze panels around the base. Each panel depicts important scenes from the life of King Harald I.[6]

Haraldshaugen commemorates the Battle of Hafrsfjord which commonly dates to the year 872. The Battle of Hafrsfjord has traditionally been regarded as the point in which western Norway was for the first time unified under one monarch. Tradition holds that Haraldshaugen is the burial site of King Harald I, who died circa 933 at Avaldsnes on nearby Karmøy, south of Haugesund, but currently there is no clear archeological evidence of this.[7] - Source: Wikipedia
