An Amhara Weekly Market in The Western Highlands of Ethiopia

Everyone knows what a poor country Ethiopia is and very few people outside of Addis Ababa can afford automobiles, motor cycles, motor scooters or even a regular bicycle! A person is considered rich if they have a donkey to help transport them, and their goods.

Because of that, driving through Ethiopia is a constant procession of people walking along the road. Painfully thin people who probably have the strongest bones in the world from heavy loads carried daily.

It was always easy to recognize a market in the distance by the long line of people going in the same direction. The Amhara comprise 26% of the country's population, and we stopped to visit their weekly market.

Let's go back to where it all started.
Enzo was really excited to know we're going to the park.
Meet enzo first. He walked in to my life as a surprise. He literally walked to me while his siblings runoff. I just picked him up and took him home. He's been the blessing of my life since. He's named after my favorite racing movie.

Start the engines, back to our main story, set destination entoto. Wait we need to get breakfast first, I know the perfect place love donut. A decent place to get tasty donuts in the city.
Took some time to try out a few of the donuts. Enzo seems to be enjoying the fresh air.
Let me tell you a bit about entoto on the way.
It is a historical place where Emperor Menelik II resided and built his palace, when he came from Ankober and founded Addis Ababa. It is considered a sacred mountain and has many monasteries.
The mountain is densely covered by eucalyptus trees that were imported from Australia during the reign of Menelik II, and mostly planted during Emperor Haile Selassie's reign. Thus, it is sometimes referred to as the lung of Addis Ababa. The forest on the mountain is an important source of firewood for the city. It was also a source of building material in earlier times.
Entoto Natural Park is the northeastern rim of Addis Abeba, on the southeastern slopes of Mt. Entoto, covering an area of 1,300 hectares. It is situated at an altitude of between 2,600 and 3,100 meters. Its annual average rainfall and temperature are 1200 mm and 14°C, respectively. The northern rim of the park serves as a watershed between the Abay (Blue Nile) and Awash rivers.

The Ethiopian Space Science Society has an observatory on the 3,200 m summit.

We left our cars off road and choose a back door entry to the park.

The first thing we noticed was a huge amount construction going in the park. The park was among many mega projects by the city government aimed changing the image of the city and creating more tourist attractions.
The park is said to incorporate biggest names in service like Khalidi's coffee and kuriftu resorts.

Kuriftu for example is undergoing final phases of reconstruction and finishing work after briefly opening last may.

We continued our journey deep in to the forest. Enzo didn't need his leash so we gave it to thisguy.
