Sarajevo Travel Guide - Bosnia and Herzegovina Fascinating Experience

Sarajevo Travel Guide - Bosnia and Herzegovina Fascinating Experience

Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is nestled in a valley, mainly within the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but with parts in the Republika Srpska entity. Sarajevo is one of the most historically interesting and varied cities in Europe. It is a place where the Western & Eastern Roman Empire split; where the people of the Roman Catholic west, Eastern Orthodox east and the Ottoman south, met, lived and warred. It has been both an example of historical turbulence and the clash of civilizations, as well as a beacon of hope for peace and tolerance through multi-cultural integration. Sarajevo is not a huge city - 395,133 people live in its urban area, but it is very livable, vibrant and busy. The city is historically famous for its traditional religious diversity, with adherents of Islam, Orthodoxy, Catholicism and Judaism coexisting there for centuries.

Sarajevo is a cosmopolitan European capital with a unique Eastern twist that is a delight to visit. The people are very friendly, be they Bosniaks, Croats, or Serb. There is very little crime, and the city ranks as one of the safest in South Eastern Europe. The town is very tourist friendly, especially in the city center.

Four distinct seasons with warm or hot summers and cold winters. Sarajevo is basically on the mountain so winters can be slightly colder here than in other capital cities in the region. You should not be surprised if you see some snow in mid October, but also sometimes in May, although it rarely occurs and stays on the ground for a very short period. Autumn can be cool, but during that period Sarajevo is very foggy and gray with little bit of sunshine.

Sarajevo is close to the center of the triangular shape of Bosnia and Herzegovina in southeastern Europe. Sarajevo city proper consists of four municipalities (or in Bosnian and Croatian: općina, in Serbian: opština): Centar (Center), Novi Grad (New City), Novo Sarajevo (New Sarajevo), and Stari Grad (Old City), while Metropolitan area of Sarajevo (Greater Sarajevo area) includes these and the neighbouring municipalities of Ilidža, Hadžići, Vogošća and Ilijaš.

Sports-related tourism uses the legacy facilities of the 1984 Winter Olympics, especially the skiing facilities on the nearby mountains of Bjelašnica, Igman, Jahorina, Trebević, and Treskavica. Sarajevo's 600 years of history, influenced by both Western and Eastern empires, makes it a tourist attraction with splendid variations. Sarajevo has hosted travellers for centuries, because it was an important trading center during the Ottoman and Austria-Hungarian empires and because was a natural stop for many routes between East and West. Examples of popular destinations in Sarajevo include the Vrelo Bosne park, the Sarajevo cathedral, and the Gazi Husrev-beg's Mosque. Tourism in Sarajevo is chiefly focused on historical, religious, cultural sites and winter sports.

Sarajevo is host to many parks throughout the city and on the outskirts of city. A popular activity among Sarajevo citizens is street chess, usually played at Trg oslobođenja Alija Izetbegović. Veliki Park is the largest green area in the center of Sarajevo. It's nestled between Titova, Koševo, Džidžikovac, Tina Ujevića and Trampina Streets and in the lower part there is a monument dedicated to the Children of Sarajevo. Hastahana is a popular place to relax in the Austro-Hungarian neighborhood of Marijin Dvor. Goat's Bridge, locally known as Kozija Ćuprija, in the Miljacka Canyon is also a popular park destination along the Dariva walkway and river Miljacka. On December 24 of 2012, a park hosting two brass sculptures resembling two mourning mothers was dedicated as the Friendship Park, commemorating over 45 years of friendship between Sarajevo and Baku.

Sarajevo is also famous for its city lookouts; including an observation deck on Avaz Twist Tower, Park Prinčeva restaurant, Vidikovac lookout (Mt. Trebević), Zmajevac lookout and Yellow/White fortresses lookouts (in Vratnik) as well as numerous other rooftops throughout the city (i.e. Alta Shopping Center, BBI Center, Hotel Hecco Deluxe).

Jesen na izmaku, Igman, planina nadomak Sarajeva - Bosna i Hercegovina | 4K

#igman #sarajevo #ilidza #hadzici #velikopolje #malopolje #1984 #olimpijada #planina #bosnaihercegovina

Sarajevo to Mt. Igman | Bosnia and Herzegovina | 4K

Mount Igman occupies the northeastern section of Mt. Bjelašnica’s 30-km-long high plateau. The northern side descends sharply toward Sarajevsko Polje and the suburbs, Ilidža and Hrasnica. The western side slopes toward the Zujevina River valley and Hadžići.

Mt. Igman has an average height of 1,300-1,400 meters, and its highest peak is Crni Vrh (1,502 m). Thick evergreen forests cover the higher elevations. The mountain is comprised of limestone, and various karst formations are visible, including Veliko Polje and Malo Polje, which are typical karst coves.

Temperature inversions can occur in these coves, resulting in exceptionally low temperatures during winter. On January 25, 1963 a record low temperature of -43.5°C (-46.3°F) was measured at Mrazište on Veliko Polje.

A legend says that Igman takes its name from one igumen, the head of an Orthodox monastery that was here centuries ago. The sparsely populated mountain was perfect for those in search of solitude.

Igman made it into local history books because of an event during WWII – the legendary Igman March. On the night of January 27, 1942, the Partisan’s First Proletariat Brigade was retreating from the more powerful fascist troops. Faced with incredibly harsh winter conditions and temperatures of -37oC, they managed to cross Igman, and then from Sarajevsko Polje they made their way toward liberated Foča.

Igman was one of the main competitive venues during the Sarajevo Olympics. The cross-country ski events were held on Veliko Polje, and the 70- and 90-meter ski jump installations were built on Malo Polje.

During the last war (1992-1995), the only way to reach Hrasnica was over Igman. Later on, the Tunnel beneath the Sarajevo Airport runway provided access to besieged Sarajevo. Igman’s strategic position made it the site of many fierce battles, the most intense of which was in July and August of 1993, when the supply route to Sarajevo was almost cut off.

All of the mountain’s sporting installations and hotels were destroyed during the war, and most have yet to be renovated. These days, accommodation on Igman can only be found in a few mountain cabins. As for sports and recreational facilities, Igman currently has 15 km of cross-country ski trails, 30 km of Nordic running and biathlon trails, tubing lanes and a fun park for children. During the summer there are facilities for football, bowling, volleyball….

Given its microclimate, Igman is considered a “pure air haven,” and a huge investment is in the works. By early 2019 (by the time the EYOWF will be held) a hotel-sports complex called O3 is set to spring up on the site currently occupied by Feri Hotel. This complex will offer fantastic conditions for sports teams and training, and will make Igman a major destination for sports tourism.

???????? Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina - Jerusalem of the Balkans ????????

There are slides of Sarajevo skyline, Baščaršija, Sarajevo old bazaar, Sebilj in Sarajevo, Serbian Orthodox Cathedral, Sarajevo Cathedral, Vijećnica, Sarajevo library, Latin Bridge, Sarajevo school of fine arts, etc.

Sarajevo is the capital and largest city of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Sarajevo metropolitan area, including Sarajevo, East Sarajevo and surrounding municipalities. Moreover, it is also the capital of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina entity, and the center of the Sarajevo Canton. Nestled within the greater Sarajevo valley of Bosnia, it is surrounded by the Dinaric Alps and situated along the Miljacka River in the heart of Southeastern Europe and the Balkans.
Sarajevo is the leading political, social and cultural center of Bosnia and Herzegovina, a prominent center of culture in the Balkans, with its region-wide influence in entertainment, media, fashion, and the arts.
Due to its long and rich history of religious and cultural variety, Sarajevo is sometimes called the Jerusalem of Europe or Jerusalem of the Balkans. It was, until late in the 20th century,[when?] the only major European city to have a mosque, Catholic church, Orthodox church and synagogue within the same neighborhood. A regional center in education, the city is also home to the Balkans' first institution of tertiary education in the form of an Islamic polytechnic called the Saraybosna Osmanlı Medrese, today part of the University of Sarajevo.
Although settlement in the area stretches back to prehistoric times, the modern city arose as an Ottoman stronghold in the 15th century. Sarajevo has attracted international attention several times throughout its history. In 1885, Sarajevo was the first city in Europe and the second city in the world to have a full-time electric tram network running through the city, following San Francisco. In 1914, it was the site of the assassination of the Archduke of Austria that sparked World War I. In WWII, Sarajevo was part of Ustashe's Independent State of Croatia, where many Serbs and Jews were killed. Forty years later, it hosted the 1984 Winter Olympics. For nearly four years, from 1992 to 1996, the city suffered the longest siege of a city in the history of modern warfare (1,425 days long) during the Bosnian War.
Sarajevo has been undergoing post-war reconstruction, and is the fastest growing city in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The travel guide series, Lonely Planet, has named Sarajevo as the 43rd best city in the world, and in December 2009 listed Sarajevo as one of the top ten cities to visit in 2010. In 2011, Sarajevo was nominated to be the European Capital of Culture in 2014 and will be hosting the European Youth Olympic Festival in 2019.
Sarajevo is also a metropolis due to being the most important and influential city in the whole country.
