New Mexico's parks are less crowded many other western parks but still have stunning scenery. On this trip we drive from South to North. Starting by exploring 3 of the least visited National Parks in the country- White Sands, Carlsbad Caverns and Guadalupe Mts..
In Alamogordo we visit New Mexico's Space History Museum and see rockets tested at the nearby missile range.
We go to one of my favorite places- 3 Rivers Petroglyphs site to hike among 20,000 ancient rock carvings and meet a blind lady in her 70 who enjoys hiking!
On the road north we go to the UFO museum in Roswell. And then walk on a Lava Field at the Valley of Fires BLM camping area, before visiting the Trinity Site.
In Albuquerque we visit the 4 sites of Petroglyph Monument including a volcano field! While looking at a map I saw a marker for Coronado State Park, so we make an unscheduled stop to see the remains an old adobe village on the Rio Grande where Spanish Conquistador Coronado once stayed- until the battle.
We make a quick stop at a stone church built in 1621. On our way to Super Volcano- or at least its remains-- Valles Caldera.
The highlight of the northern part of the trip is the cliff dwellings at Bandelier National Monument. We visit the cliff houses and see the nearby stone village.
We make a quick stop in Santa Fe and another in Taos before flying over the spectacular Rio Grande Gorge Bridge before our final stop on top of a cinder cone volcano and Capulin Volcano National Monument.

We had a great weekend out exploring the Gypsum Hills. Ancient floodplains, buttes, canyons, mesas, and sinkholes are rare on the Great Plains. Yet, nestled in the Kansas grasslands are the Gypsum Hills, or Red Hills, with plenty of geologic diversity. The Gypsum Hills Scenic Byway is enchantingly noteworthy for its rolling, weathered hills, picturesque vistas, and outdoor recreational options. The drive affords tantalizing views of the rugged landscape and includes two scenic overlooks to help you soak it all in.

White Sands National Park | ????WORLD's LARGEST Gypsum Dune field
You'll want to plan a road trip to White Sands National Park, formerly White Sands National Monument. Located in New Mexico on U.S. Route 70, the gypsum white sand dunes are great for sand sledding and a must if you're planning to visit America's parks.
White Sands New Mexico is the newest national park in the United States and an easy drive from El Paso, Las Cruces, and Alamogordo. One of many things to do in New Mexico, you can hike white sands, picnic, go sledding in sand dunes, and enjoy a spectacular sunset as the colors reflect off the pure white gypsum sand.
At 275 square miles, the White Sands dune field is the world’s largest gypsum dunefield. The finely grained gypsum is soft, like powder, doesn't absorb the heat so you can walk barefoot and not burn your toesies, and perfect for dune sledding.
The best time to visit White Sands National Park is April through October. Cost to visit is $25 per car, $15 for solo drivers, or get in free with your America the Beautiful Pass.

Gypsum Campground is a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Campground just west of Gypsum Colorado. 8 Campsites are $10 per night. I-70 is north of the campground and the Eagle River flows past all campsites on the south side of Gypsum Campground.

Kansas Gypsum Hills Ghost Towns // Aetna, Sun City, Lake City, Mingona
I was fortunate to spend an awesome day exploring The Gypsum Hills and found these four cool old towns. Aetna is right in the heart of the hills, and not much is there anymore. Sun City has a lot to see, as well as an interesting and colorful history. Lake City is full of old buildings and a cool elevator. I finished the night seeing a beautiful sunset in Mingona. Kansas never disappoints!
