Campground Map from Alabama State Parks
We know most people go to the beach. But what if the weather is cold or there is a double red flag day? There are many trailheads with parking. The beach at Gulf State Park is one of the best we’ve been to. The main pavilion has a bike rack right at the beach access. There is a nominal parking fee that is waived if you are staying in the park at the lodge or campground. Full bathrooms are located here for your convenience as well as picnic tables and showers. From the beach, cyclists can head to the interpretive center before heading over 182 Alabama’s Coastal Connection on an awesome bridge. The interpretive center has hands-on experiences for a quick stop before heading into the park.
Shelby Lake has many activities for the whole family. Shelby Lake is just inside the shore near the fishing pier. There is a Boat Launch, Kayak Launch, and Kayak, canoe and paddleboard rentals. Your brood will love the playground and picnic area. The playground here has large installations for all ages and a smaller toddler area for little ones who are ready to get active. Swimming is allowed in Shelby Lake. Restrooms are also available and there is a dog park and plenty of parking here, too.
Do you bike with your dogs? Dog Pond at Shelby Lake is reserved for canines.
The trail includes 28 miles of paved and boardwalk surface that allows access to the park.
Number 4 on our list is the fishing pier. Hurricane Sally did a number on the Fishing Pier. The pier is open for fishing. There is a nominal fee to visit the pier and it varies based on a few factors but less than $10 per person. Included on the pier is a gift, snack, and bait shop, beachside bar and grill, Fillet table, and modern bathrooms. On calm days you can see a variety of fish from the pier including sharks, rays, manatee, and game fish including mackerel, sheepshead, and flounder to name a few. The fishing pier has a large parking lot and bike racks to spend your day there.
Alligators can be found on the Bike trail.
Gulf State Park embraces geocaching and you can bike and hike with purpose throughout the park.
As you spend your day in the park you may get hungry. If you haven’t packed a lunch check out the Woodside Restaurant.
From Woodside Restaurant to Al’s Parkour challenge and Hidden Lake which we will talk about next is less than 5 miles.
About halfway to Al’s Parkour on the Gulf Oak Ridge Trail is a beautiful forest covered in Spanish Moss. Riding through this area is magical and worth the ride around the back side of the park.
There is a long route further east called Rattlesnake Ridge. This is for people who want to put miles in or are staying outside the park in Orange Beach. It can loop around after the Orange Beach City Hall to Catman Road using road 161 Alabama’s coastal connection for a brief time.

The swimming pool, Nature Center, Tennis Courts and Campground store are located on middle lake inside the campground. There is a $2 fee per vehicle to get into the campground if you aren’t staying in the park camping, at the park lodge, or in a cabin. We don’t know if the pool is heated but it always seems like a better alternative to the ocean when the weather is cool. The splash pad is a lot of fun, too. The pool area is in a protected area, maybe sheltered by the pool entrance, with less wind. Tennis and pickle ball courts are next to the pool and are used often. There are four tennis courts at the facility. However, two are setup for pickle ball and have basketball hoops inside the fence. Tucked away behind the pool and Nature center are horseshoe pits, beach volleyball, swings and monkey bars. The nature center gets good reviews and they always have something interesting to share about the reptiles, birds, fish, other wildlife, general habitat and conservations in the area. Throughout the park, hidden in plain sight are a number of playgrounds with swings, climbing installations, and other equipment that will help you pass the time. There are many fishing spots along the inland ponds and lakes that are great for fishing. A freshwater fishing license is required. Make sure to pack your bike and hiking or running shoes.
The fishing pier sustained damage during Hurricane Sally. With sustained winds of 105 miles per hour and at least one gust over 120 mph the category 2 hurricane traveled over the area at only 2 miles per hour causing significant damage to Alabama. Today the pier is open for fishing and licenses are required. There is a fee to visit the pier and it varies based on your residency, camping in the park, and other factors. Fishing licenses are also required and can be purchased on-line. We’ll put a link in our description with more details. Included on the pier is a gift, snack, and bait shop, beachside bar and grill, Fillet table, and modern bathrooms. On calm days you can see a variety of fish from the pier including sharks, rays, manatee, and game fish including mackerel, sheepshead, and flounder to name a few.
The beach at Gulf State Park is one of the best we’ve been to. There are a few ways to attack the beach while in the park. The fishing pier has a large parking lot and bike racks to spend your day there. The advantage is the gift shop, pier, and restaurant provide ways to escape the sun and provide some alternate entertainment to make a day of it. The beach stretches for miles and walks along the shoreline will take you to hotel properties, space for meditation, and exploring for shells and shark teeth. The main pavilion is the second way of scoring a place on the sand. Full bathrooms are located here for your convenience as well as picnic tables and showers to remove the sand at the end of the day. We found this beach quite busy and great for people watching, getting a lot of sun and again, exploring the shoreline. Our favorite spot is way more difficult to get to but just as amazing for different reasons. The shoreline here is flatter and great for skim boarding. At the campground road there is parking for five vehicles and bike racks. It is popular for surf casting as there are fewer people and less congestion. We found it to be quiet, almost lonely at times. However, the skim boarding was epic.

10. Cameron Lake & Cathedral Grove
These are located near each other in central Vancouver Island, sitting between Parksville and Port Alberni. Cameron lake is a tranquil spot on the island with many other natural attractions in the area. Witness the old-growth giant trees at Cathedral Grove and more.
9. Goldstream Provincial Park
Located right outside of Victoria, Goldstream Provincial Park is a great spot for hiking, camping and connecting with nature. Explore the beautiful “Niagara” waterfall or do a challenging hike to the neighboring peak of Mount Finlayson.

7. Port Renfrew
The fishing village of Port Renfrew is another place you cannot miss on Vancouver Island! Also called Wild Renfrew, this area is known for its ancient rainforest, world-class hiking trails, and its stunning beaches.
6. Cowichan Valley
Cowichan Valley is another unique place to visit on Vancouver Island. Activities to enjoy here include hiking or biking Mount Tzouhalem, sipping wine at one of the idyllic vineyards, exploring the largest totem pole collection in Duncan, and seeing the sea lions in Cowichan Bay.
5. Lake Cowichan
Lake Cowichan is another amazing travel destination worth mentioning on its own. This freshwater lake is about 30 km or 18.6mi long and sits to the west of Duncan, in the Cowichan Valley.
4. Shawnigan Lake
Located about 40km north of Victoria at the southern edge of the Cowichan Valley, Shawnigan Lake is a popular place to vacation. The lake is 7km long and great for fishing, swimming, and sunbathing in the summer. But what we like the most in this area is hiking.

3. Sombrio & Mystic Beach
Mystic Beach has a beautiful waterfall that Cascades into the ocean, whereas Sombrio Beach has the best vibe for beach camping. Sombrio is a popular weekend getaway with friends or family during the summer and also offers some hidden waterfalls of its own.
2. Tofino & Ucluelet
Tofino and Ucluelet are both great destinations to get away and relax in nature on Vancouver Island! There is amazing hiking and surfing, and you will find the sandiest beaches on the island here! Our top pick of beaches include Cox Bay, Mackenzie Beach, Chesterman Beach, Long Beach, and Wickaninnish.

Gulf State Park Campground Site Photos - Score Your Ultimate Site!
Find your Campsite at Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores Alabama with this video. We have marked each site for easy identification.
Sites 464-468 are at the very east end of the campground. The map is from gulf state park. Each site has a grille, picnic table, and full hookup. These are some of the most secluded sites in the park. We like how the connection side is to the road and the door/awning side of the RV faces the woods. There is a lot of green space here and it is a quieter area of the park. The stars are more visible here too if your neighbors turn their lights off and enjoy the dark sky like we do. The wifi is very good throughout the park. It doesn’t matter where you are in the park the repeaters are on multiple towers and broadcast a good net.

Between sites 442 and 440 is the Middle Lake Overlook Trail. This trail is a short walk with a great view of Middle Lake. If you need RV repair we noticed a few like this company working daily. Coming up are the few primitive tent sites in the park. Tents are allowed on the RV sites and you can reserve an RV site without having an RV. The Tent Sites 11-1 are here and to the left you will see the Armadillo trail. They are nestled in the woods and provide a great experience. You’ll see the sites come with picnic tables. I’m sure the trees help shade campers and provide a cooler camping experience.
The Group camping site is here and swings are next to that site. We noticed an alligator relaxing in the ditch or on the culvert here most days. Sites 199-316 are in this loop. The loop is closer to the pool and Hospitality hub. This is a big loop with 3 bathhouses. There is room for Class A’s with Tag Axles and the large gooseneck trailers.
The swimming pool, Nature Center, Tennis Courts and Campground store are located on middle lake inside the campground. There are four tennis courts at the facility. However, two are setup for pickle ball and have basketball hoops inside the fence. Tucked away behind the pool and Nature center are horseshoe pits, beach volleyball, swings and monkey bars. The nature center gets good reviews and they always have something interesting to share about the reptiles, birds, fish, other wildlife, general habitat and conservations in the area. Throughout the park, hidden in plain sight are a number of playgrounds with swings, climbing installations, and other equipment that will help you pass the time. There are many fishing spots along the inland ponds and lakes that are great for fishing. Gulf State Park is located between Gulf Shores and Orange Beach in Alabama’s Gulf of Mexico shoreline. The turquoise coast is magnificent and Alabama did it right by protecting thousands of acres.
Tent sites are about $30 per night. RV sites vary and most of the sites are priced between $60 - $70 per night. The canal sites which we will show later are in the $80-$90 range. Most are full hookup rv sites with water, sewer, and electric. The electric has 20 amp, 30 amp, and 50 amp outlets.
There are 11 bath houses which are well maintained with good showers, sinks, and toilets. Self service laundry is available, for a fee, at the campground store building. The store has firewood ice, logoed products like sweatshirts and magnets,, snacks, rv supplies, and beach gear for purchase. If you need to rent a bike they can be rented here for a fee as well. We were very surprised to find great WiFi connectivity at the campground.
