Namibia's Best Kept Secret - A Golden Route

• Subscribe To Gondwana:
• Gondwana Website:
• Namibia 2 Go Travels:
---------------------------------------------------------------

About This Episode:

The Zambezi Region. The area is rich in wildlife and has mineral resources. Of particular interest to the government of Namibia is that it gives access to the Zambezi River and is thereby a potential trading route to Africa's East Coast. However, the vagaries of the river level, various rapids, the presence of Victoria Falls downstream and continued political uncertainty in the region make this use of the Caprivi Strip unlikely, although it may be used for ecotourism in the future.

The Caprivi Strip in which the Zambezi Region is situated is a tropical area, with high temperatures and much rainfall during the December-to-March rainy season, making it the wettest region of Namibia. The terrain is mostly made up of swamps, floodplains, wetlands and woodland.

In addition to the Zambezi River, the strip also holds the Cuando and Kwando River, which marks the border with Botswana. Tributaries of the river here go by different names, including the Linyata and the Chobe. The province's far east is where the Cuando meets the Zambezi.

Gondwana Collection Namibia offer the best self-drive holiday in Namibia. Their on-the-ground knowledge and expertise are good assets throughout the planning process.

Driving through the Caprivi Region in Northeastern Namibia with Namibia2Go will offer you the best opportunity to experience Namibia at its best.

Namushasha is located near the Kwando River. Zambezi Mubala Lodge and Zambezi Mubala Camp are located on the river banks of the Zambezi, which aslo serves as the border to Northeaster Namibia. Chobe River Camp is located on the Chobe River. All of these form part of Namibia's Northeaster River systems where the great Namibian Wildlife can be found.

Top 5 National Parks of the Republic of Namibia in southern Africa

Top 5 national parks and reserves in Namibia video, southern Africa.

National parks in Namibia:

0:18 Ai-Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park

1:24 Hobas Camp
1:45 Fish River Canyon: main viewpoint

4:59 Sossusvlei & Dead Vlei
5:29 Skeleton Coast National Park
6:01 Shipwrecks
7:41 Terrace Bay & Torra Bay
8:03 Waterberg National Park

The ǀAi-ǀAis/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park is a peace park straddling the border between South Africa and Namibia. It was formed in 2003 by combining the Namibian ǀAi-ǀAis Hot Springs Game Park and the South African Richtersveld National Park. Most of the South African part of the park forms part of the buffer zone of the Richtersveld Cultural and Botanical Landscape World Heritage Site, which measures 5,920 square kilometres. The Fish River Canyon is located in the park, the largest canyon in Africa. A memorandum of understanding was signed on 17 August 2003 by the presidents of South Africa and Namibia, which formalised the establishment of the park. |Ai-|Ais means ‘burning water’, after the hot springs of the same name.

Etosha National Park is a national park in northwestern Namibia and one of the largest national parks in Africa. It was proclaimed a game reserve in March 1907 in Ordinance 88 by the Governor of German South West Africa, Friedrich von Lindequist. It was designated as Wildschutzgebiet in 1958, and was awarded the status of national park in 1967 by an act of parliament of the Republic of South Africa. It spans an area of 22,270 km2 and was named after the large Etosha pan which is almost entirely within the park. With an area of 4,760 km2, the Etosha pan covers 23% of the total area of the national park. The area is home to hundreds of species of mammals, birds and reptiles, including several threatened and endangered species such as the black rhinoceros. Sixty-one black rhinoceros were killed during poaching in Namibia during 2022, 46 of which were killed in Etosha.

The Namib-Naukluft Park is a national park in western Namibia, situated between the coast of the Atlantic Ocean and the edge of the Great Escarpment. It encompasses part of the Namib Desert (considered the world's oldest desert), the Naukluft mountain range, and the lagoon at Sandwich Harbour. The best-known area of the park and one of the main visitor attractions in Namibia is Sossusvlei, a clay pan surrounded by dunes, and Sesriem, a small canyon of the Tsauchab. The desert research station of Gobabeb is situated within the park.

With an overall area of 49,768 km2, the Namib-Naukluft National Park was at the time of its last expansion the largest game park in Africa and the fourth largest in the world. It consists of a strip of land on the Atlantic Ocean, including 1,609 kilometres of sea, that extends roughly 600 kilometres north-to-south from the Swakop River to the B4 road to Lüderitz.

Skeleton Coast National Park is a national park located in northwest Namibia, and has the most inaccessible shores, dotted with shipwrecks. The park was established in 1971 and has a size of 16,845 km2. The park is divided into a northern and southern section, the southern section is open to those with 4 wheel drive vehicles, they are allowed to go up (north) as far as the Ugab River Gate (where a sign with a skull and crossbones warns you to go no further). The northern section can only be reached by a fly-in safari, and the area is off-limits to all vehicles.

Top 5 attractions of small town Okahandja in Namibia, southern Africa

Okahandja town: top 5 attractions and historical images, Namibia, southern Africa.

#Okahandja #Namibia #Top5Africa

Okahandja:

Timecodes:

0:51 Lutheran Church
1:20 Mbangura Market
2:07 Railway station
2:48 Horse riding club
3:11 Moordkoppie
3:45 Bonus: old Okahandja

The Church of Peace (Friedenskirche Deutsche Evangelische-Lutherische Gemeinde), a Lutheran-Evangelistic church built in 1952, and also the house of Dr. Vedder, one of the oldest in town, are located in old part of Okahandja.

Just south of the post office, on Hoof Street, is a building known as the old stronghold, or the old fort. This was the town's old police station, started in 1894, though now it is empty and falling into disrepair.

Mbangura Market

This craft market is Okahandja’s best known tourist attraction. Woodcarvers from all over, and as far as the Kavango Region of north-eastern Namibia, who practice their ancient skills come here to sell their goods. Since wood is not resistant to the wear and tear of time, wood sculptures survive less well than other forms of art and are therefore an important hidden element in the art history of many cultures. The wood-and-thatch market is situated next to the main road at the town’s entrance and in town center.

Railway station

It serves the town of Okahandja and is part of the TransNamib Railway.

Okahandja is situated on the Windhoek - Swakopmund line, built in 1902 during Imperial Germany's colonial rule of German South West Africa. In 1914 this line was extended to Walvis Bay.

Okahandja is connected to a number of towns in the north of Namibia via the railway junction in Kranzberg, which lies on the Windhoek-Swakopmund-Walvis Bay route, and to the south and east of Namibia via Windhoek.

Moordkoppie

The historical animosity between the Nama and the Herero had its most emphatic expression at the Battle of Moordkoppie (Afrikaans for Murder Hill) on 23 August 1850. During the battle, 700 Herero under the command of chief Katjihene were massacred by Nama forces. Half of the victims were women and children, whose bodies were dismembered for the copper bangles on their arms and legs. The scene of this tragedy was a small rocky hill near the centre of town between the B2 and the railway line, 500 m north of the Gross Barmen turn-off.

Reit Club Okahandja - Horse riding club
In 1909 the club house was built by Dr. Fock, the Mayor of Okahandja, to be his residence. In 1958 it was made into a club house and stable yard called Reit Club Okahandja.

The Reit Club has numerous facilities for the equestrian sport, consisting of 120 stables, paddocks, a club house, a residence, jumping and dressage facilities with a cafe and a large spectator pavilion.

Roy’s Camp, Grootfontein, Namibia | Campsite Review

Roy’s camp is a rustic but very elegant, well kept, amazing camp outside the town of Grootfontein. Grootfontein is in the Otjozondjupa Region in the northern parts of Namibia. This is a great camp to stay for a couple of days or stay over on your way to the Khaudum or Rundu. The campsites are spacious. They also have chalets available. At the lapa area you can enjoy meals or have a refreshing drink next to the fire.

Hoba Meteorite near Grootfontein in northern Namibia - the largest in the world

The world's largest meteorite mentioned in Guinness Book of Records - the pride of Namibia - Hoba Meteorite, located near town Grootfontein.

#Meteorite #SafariNamibia #SouthernAfrica

Hoba Meteorite:

The world's largest meteorite - Hoba is located in the north of Namibia and can be found on the farm Hoba in vicinity of northern town Grootfontein. It was discovered and first described by J. Brits in 1920. His statement can be seen in the Grootfontein Museum.
The iron meteorite discovered is the largest single meteorite ever found and the largest piece of iron ever found near Earth's surface. It is tabular in shape and was given the name Hoba because it was discovered on a farm named Hoba West.
A farmer was plowing a field near Grootfontein, Namibia when his plow suddenly screeched to a halt. Curious about what he had run into, he dug in the soil to find a large piece of metal. The large metal mass quickly attracted the attention of scientists and others, who identified it as a meteorite and removed the soil around it. Although excavated, the meteorite has not been moved from its location of discovery because of its great weight. However, many pieces have been removed for scientific study and through vandalism.
The Hoba meteorite weights approximately 60 tons and has a measures 2.95 by 2.84 meters. Not only the size and its weight that makes this single largest known meteorite in the world so unique but also its cuboid shape which is highly unusual amongst meteorites. It was declared a national monument in March 1955 but despite the fact still suffered from vandals over the years.
The estimated age of meteorite is between 200 and 400 million years and it fell on Earth approximately 80 000 years ago.
The meteorite consists of 82.4% iron, 16.4% nickel and 0.76% cobalt. The scientific classification of Hoba Meteorite is nickel-rich ataxite.

No crater?

It is surprising that this meteorite is not surrounded by a crater. Objects of this size should punch through the atmosphere at a very high rate of speed and hit Earth with enough force to blast a significant crater. No crater is present around the site of the meteorite. This suggests that it fell to earth at a lower rate of speed than expected. Some scientists believe that the flat shape of the object may be responsible for its low velocity at impact.

A National Monument of Namibia

The Namibian government has declared the meteorite and the site where it rests as a national monument. The site now has a small tourist center and is visited by thousands of people each year.
In 1985 the Rossing Uranium Ltd. made funds available for the purpose of combating vandalism.
The meteorite site was donated by farm owner for educational purposes in 1987 and facilities (information centre, kiosk, etc.) were opened in the same year. Camping is available at Meteorite Camp nearby.
Hoba meteorite is the largest known single meteorite in the world.

GHAUB GUEST FARM AND CAVE GROOTFONTEIN AREA NAMIBIA SOUTHERN AFRICA

Ghaub Nature Reserve & Guest Farm video, lodge is located in Grootfontein area of Namibia.

#GhaubGuestFarmReserve #GrootfonteinNamibia #EtoshaTsumeb

Ghaub:

An idyllic oasis in the rugged Otavi mountains: rustic farm walls, tall palm trees, thick bush and a lush lawn surround the lovingly restored historic buildings of the Ghaub Lodge.

The 120 km² area of Ghaub houses a game-rich nature reserve with extraordinary rock engravings, a limestone cave as well as a farm with livestock and cultivation of vegetables.

The Ghaub Experience:

Rhino drive (rhino, giraffe, eland, blesbok etc.; rock engravings)
Rhino tracking (encounter rhinos on eye level)
Cave excursion (third largest cave in Namibia)
Farm tour (cattle farming, vegetable cultivation)
Nature trails (pleasant mountain landscape, more than 250 bird species)
Historical ambience (former mission station of 1895)
Farm products (vegetable, fruits, fruit juices, jams etc.)

Annual rain amount already at halftime
January 2021
This rainy season will go down in history not only in the south of Namibia. Even in the Otavi Mountains, which are often spoiled by rain, farmers were surprised by the total amount received. In the nature reserve of Ghaub you can see well-nourished game and a permanent resident who otherwise maintains a low profile.

Paradise for rhinos
The grass sprouted everywhere. A real land of milk and honey for square-lipped rhinos (Ceratotherium simum), red hartebeest (Alcelaphus buselaphus caama), springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis) and other graminivores. But also folivores such as giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) or kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros) found a richly laid table in the young leaves of the trees and bushes.

Particularly remarkable is that you spot leopard tortoises (Stigmochelys pardalis) much more often than usual. As they are dependent on water, they use the many puddles in the Veld for their search for new areas or a partner.

Ghaub combines ambience of pioneer days with modern comfort. Buildings, palm trees and farm walls recall the mission station founded by the Rhenish Missionary Society in 1895.

In the late 1990s, the historical buildings have been restored and carefully converted, and guest wings have been added.

12 rooms with bathroom, lounge and patio
coffee station & mini bar, 220 V power
restaurant (set menu) and bar
large swimming pool with children's pool
free WLAN at the reception

Ghaub Campsite
The pitches of the Ghaub Campsite are well apart from each other, hidden under trees on the slope of a small mountain and offering a great view of the Ghaub valley in the middle of the Otavi Mountains.

The campsites are located at the starting point of the nature trails and below the Lion King rock, from where you can greet the rising sun.

Three pitches, each with own shower/WC
lawn, barbecue, table, sink, light, socket
5 min. walk to the lodge (restaurant, bar, pool, free WLAN)
fire wood available

Activities

Rhino drive
A charming contrast to Etosha: The mountainous area of our 30 km² nature reserve is home to game such as giraffe, oryx, impala, eland, blesbok, red hartebeest and mountain zebra. We almost always encounter white rhinos. Another highlight is the unique rock engravings of our ancestors. Experts rave about the elephant.

Cave excursion
Not for claustrophobic visitors! Physical fitness is also a must: the deeper the cave, the less oxygen in the air. With a passage system extending to a length of 2.5 km, the Ghaub limestone cave is the third largest cave in Namibia. We have to crawl and climb in places, so please wear sturdy clothes and shoes. Helmets and headlamps are provided.

Nature trails

Whether you want to take a walk or go on a hike – well-demarcated trails lead you through the mountain paradise of Ghaub with its over 250 bird species. A cemetery and a stone pulpit at the side of the road are historical reminders of a small missionary parish and the last fights between the German Schutztruppe and troops of the South African Union during World War One.
