Germany: A visit to Miltenberg
Miltenberg is a town in Bavaria, Germany. It is the seat of the like-named district and has a population of over 9,000.
The old town lies on the Main’s left bank on the left knee of the Mainviereck (Main Square) between the Spessart and Odenwald ranges. Since the Main riverbed in the Miltenberg area is relatively near the foot of the Odenwald, only a narrow strip of usable land is left, little over 150 meters in width,[2]:79 which in past centuries was time and again flooded by the Main. The historic centre, which stands on this land, often sustained considerable damage in these floods. Only in the 21st century efficient flood control measures, most of all a wall, have significantly reduced the adverse effects of these floods.
Some interesting sights are: the historic town centre with the Schnatterloch, the historic market square which served as a location for some scenes of the film The Spessart Inn (1958). Nearby are the Hotel Zum Riesen (one of Germany’s oldest inns, if not the oldest) and the old town hall. Miltenberg still has a total of around 150 half-timbered houses. Mildenburg (the local castle). It was the seat of the Oberamtmann, the Archbishop's local administrator until 1803. The Mainz Gate (Mainzer Tor), the Würzburg Gate (Würzburger Tor).

Miltenberg - is a town in the Regierungsbezirk of Lower Franconia in Bavaria, Germany. It is the seat of the like-named district and has a population of over 9,000. Source :
The seat of a historic county in the old Electorate of Mainz, the town of Miltenberg is pressed against a bend in the River Main by the final eastern peaks of the Odenwald range.
The old town is 2.5 kilometres long but only a maximum 150 metres wide. And those slopes bank up to the south and bring a sense of spectacle to Miltenberg’s romantic alleys and squares.
The many half-timbered houses bear witness to Miltenberg’s historic wealth as a centre of commerce on the navigable Main River.
Some epoch-making figures have called in on Miltenberg, including two Holy Roman Emperors and Napoleon. What’s amazing is that the inn where they all stayed is still in business.

Wir beginnen unseren Rundgang durch die größte Stadt des Odenwaldkreises (Hessen) am historischen Marktplatz. Dort bewundern wir das Rathaus von 1484, den Marktbrunnen und die Fachwerkhäuser. Anschliessend können wir in der bereis im Jahre 741 erstmals urkundlich erwähnten Stadt u.a.
die Stadtkirche Michelstadt von 1490, die Synagoge, das Elefantenhaus, die Burg Michelstadt und den Gasthof Grüner Baum besichtigen.

Here we can admire the town hall from 1484, the market fountain and the half-timbered houses. Michelstadt was first mentioned in records from 741. After the market square we can visit for example the town church Michelstadt from 1490, the synagogue, the elephant house, the castle Michelstadt and the guesthouse ‘Green Tree’ (‘Grüner Baum’).

The story of the Engelberg
above the Main, then called Rulesberg, goes back to the pre-Christian era. At that time there was a pagan place of worship, of which the so-called Hünenstein or Heuneschüssel, a huge boulder with a bowl-like depression, still bears testimony.
Around 1300 a simple wooden chapel was built on the mountain and dedicated to the Archangel Michael. As the leader of the heavenly hosts, he was chosen with preference as the patron saint of places in former pagan shrines. The old “Rulesberg” gradually became the “Engelberg”. At the beginning of the 14th century (1310 is mentioned) a statue of the Virgin Mary came into the chapel, which is venerated there as a miraculous image of grace and is the goal of pilgrimages.
The double veneration of the Archangel Michael and the Blessed Mother Mary, as Queen of Angels, is the origin of the local pilgrimage. Your oldest authentic document, the content of which suggests a heavily visited but in need of repair chapel, dates from 1406.
As the number of pilgrims grew, the Archbishop of Mainz, Anselm Casimir Wambolt von Umstadt, to whose district the area belonged at the time, summoned the Capuchins to Engelberg in 1630 and had a monastery built for them. General Jakob Alfons Franz Calderon d’Avila donated the first documented altar of grace to Mary in 1692, who was also buried in the monastery church in 1695 and whose grave slab is preserved there.
In 1828 the convent was taken over by the Franciscans of the Bavarian Franciscan Province by order of King Ludwig I of Bavaria.
Die Geschichte des Engelberges
über dem Main, damals „Rulesberg“ genannt, geht zurück bis in die vorchristliche Epoche. Damals befand sich dort eine heidnische Kultstätte, wovon heute noch der sogenannte „Hünenstein“ oder „Heuneschüssel“, ein gewaltiger Felsblock mit einer schüsselartigen Vertiefung, Zeugnis gibt.
Etwa um 1300 wurde auf dem Berg eine einfache Kapelle aus Holz errichtet und dem Erzengel Michael geweiht. Als Anführer der himmlischen Heerscharen wählte man ihn mit Vorliebe zum Kirchenpatron an Plätzen ehemaliger heidnischer Heiligtümer. So wurde aus dem alten „Rulesberg“ allmählich der „Engelberg“. Anfang des 14. Jahrhunderts (1310 wird genannt) kam in die Kapelle auch eine Marienstatue, die dort bis heute als wundertätiges Gnadenbild verehrt wird und das Ziel von Wallfahrten ist.
Die Doppelverehrung des Erzengels Michael und der Gottesmutter Maria, als „Königin der Engel“, ist der Ursprung der hiesigen Wallfahrt. Ihre älteste authentische Urkunde, deren Inhalt auf eine stark besuchte aber reparaturbedürftige Kapelle schließen lässt, stammt aus dem Jahr 1406.
Als die Zahl der Pilger immer stärker wurde, berief der Mainzer Erzbischof Anselm Casimir Wambolt von Umstadt, zu dessen Sprengel das Gebiet seinerzeit gehörte, 1630 die Kapuziner auf den Engelberg und ließ ihnen ein Kloster bauen. Den ersten urkundlich belegten Marien-Gnadenaltar stiftet 1692 General Jakob Alfons Franz Calderon d’Avila, der auch 1695 in der Klosterkirche beigesetzt wurde, und dessen Grabplatte dort erhalten ist.
1828 wurde der Konvent auf Anordnung Königs Ludwig I. von Bayern von den Franziskanern der Bayerischen Franziskanerprovinz übernommen.

Nun ist sie zu Ende, mein Wanderwoche im Aprilwinter 2022 . An meinen Bonustag in Miltenberg laufe ich zunächst hoch zur Mildenburg, dann runter ins Schwarzviertel und gen Großheubach. Von dort geht es entlang eines Kreuzwegs über 612 Stufen hoch zum Kloster Engelberg.
