GRIMBERGEN
Deze namiddag namen we voor het eerst na een lange tijd, wegens de corona, opnieuw de bus om Grimbergen te gaan bezichtigen.
Grimbergen is een plaats en gemeente in de provincie Vlaams-Brabant in België. De gemeente, die de benaming Parel van Brabant deelt met de Nederlandse dorpen Oisterwijk en Heeze, telt iets meer dan 37.000 inwoners. De gemeente wordt gerekend tot de streek Brabantse Kouters.
De Abdij van Grimbergen is een norbertijnenabdij in de Brabantse circarie. Ze ligt in Grimbergen, ongeveer 10 kilometer ten noorden van Brussel. Het is de oudste bewoonde norbertijnenabdij van België. Het embleem van de abdij is de feniks, ontleend aan de Griekse mythologie.
De Sint-Servaasbasiliek in Grimbergen wordt beschouwd als een van de mooiste en meest harmonieuze barokkerken in de Lage Landen. De kerk maakt deel uit van de norbertijnerabdij van Grimbergen maar doet tevens dienst als parochiekerk.
Grimbergen heeft een Belgisch abdijbier Grimbergen. Het wordt gebrouwen door Brouwerijen Alken-Maes te Alken. Alken-Maes is sinds 2008 een onderdeel van Heineken, maar bij de overname werd het merk Grimbergen toegewezen aan Brouwerij Carlsberg. Heineken kreeg wel een langdurige licentie op het merk.

This afternoon, for the first time after a long time, we took the bus to visit Grimbergen.
Grimbergen is a town and municipality in the province of Flemish Brabant in Belgium. The municipality, which shares the name Pearl of Brabant with the Dutch villages Oisterwijk and Heeze, has just over 37,000 inhabitants. The municipality is part of the Brabant Kouters region.
The Grimbergen Abbey is a Premonstratensian abbey in the Brabant Circus. It is located in Grimbergen, about 10 kilometres north of Brussels. It is the oldest inhabited Premonstratensian abbey in Belgium. The abbey's emblem is the phoenix, borrowed from Greek mythology.
The Basilica of Saint Servatius in Grimbergen is considered to be one of the most beautiful and harmonious Baroque churches in the Low Countries. The church is part of the Norbertine abbey of Grimbergen but also serves as a parish church.
Grimbergen has a Belgian abbey beer called Grimbergen. It is brewed by Brouwerijen Alken-Maes in Alken. Alken-Maes has been part of Heineken since 2008, but when it was taken over, the Grimbergen brand was assigned to the Carlsberg brewery. Heineken did, however, receive a long-term licence for the brand.

YOU GUYS! Obviously Belgium is very well-known for their food, but these fries were NEXT LEVEL (sorry had to start this by mentioning fries LOL)!! In today's vlog we're in Brussels, and these are some of the best things to do!!
We kicked off the day with coffee as well as some breakfast. When I think of Belgium, three things pop into my mind: waffles, fries, & chocolate. SO, we knocked out one of the three by stopping at Maison Dandoy for some Belgian waffles. They specialize in waffles as well as specaloos, which are small spiced shortbread biscuits.See the Grand-Place
Right around the corner from Maison Dandoy is Grand Place, which is the most popular and most visited part of Brussels. Grand Place is the central square for the city of Brussels, and it’s known worldwide for it’s beauty. Around the square are extremely beautiful guild houses, the City Hall, & the Maison du Roi, which translates to ‘The King’s House’. This place is very similar to the Vienna City Hall in the fact that it REALLY shows out at Christmas time where it hosts a massive Christmas market.
Just a short walk from Grand-Palace is one of the quirkier things in Brussels. It’s called Mannekin Pis and I’ll let you put two and two together on why it has that name LOL.
Next up, a church!! Notre Dame Du Sablon isn’t the biggest or oldest church in Brussels, but it’s exterior is built in the gothic style & has two baroque chapels inside. We just couldn't pass it up!
Right next to Notre Dame Du Sablon is a place called Passion Chocolat. As we said earlier Belgium is known for three major things. We’ve tried the waffles, and now it’s on to the chocolate. We chose this chocolate shop because A) they’re very popular, but also B) because they don’t use preservatives, extracts, or concentrates in their product.
We then made the short walk down Rue de la Régence to see the Royal Palace of Brussels. Although it's been more than a century since the Belgian royal family lived in it, the Royal Palace of Brussels remains the headquarters of the Belgian constitutional monarchy. The palace was built in the 19th century and sits on the south side of Parc de Bruxelles, or Brussels Park. Full disclosure, we had no idea Belgium had a royal family LOL.
Since we were at the Royal Palace, we figured we might as well take a walk through Brussels Park. Parc Royal as it’s known locally is the largest public park in Brussels and was renovated from hunting grounds to a park in 1770.
Next up, FRIES! We took the public transit in order to access our late lunch spot. It’s called Frit Flagey and it’s really popular for locals here in Brussels. It’s a bit of a ride outside of the central part of the city but MAN is it worth it. They say that waffles, chocolate, and fries are the things to get here so knocking out all three in one day seemed appropriate for us LOL
We went home to clean up before we got dinner at a restaurant called Le Bistro. It had fabulous local food and we highly recommend it!
I know we’ve already been to Grand-Place today, but every time we’ve ever seen photos of it have been during the night time, which suggests to that it really shines when the sun goes down. It’s basically right in the center of Le Bistro and our last stop, so we wanted to stop one last time.
As we’ve said a few times today, Belgium is known for waffles, chocolate, & fries; but that’s not the whole picture. Belgians LOVE their beer and since we’re beer lovers ourselves, we wanted to end the night somewhere that would paint an accurate picture of this. Make sure to stop at Delirium to pick from one of their 2004 different beers!!!!

Basiliekwandeling van Vilvoorde naar Grimbergen
Wat een prachtige zomerdag vandaag, dus trokken we onze wandelschoenen weer aan om een flinke wandeling gaan te doen, namelijk, de Basiliekwandeling van Vilvoorde naar Grimbergen.
Van Basiliek tot Basiliek is een 9 km lange wandelroute door het groen, van Vilvoorde naar Grimbergen. Ze neemt je mee door stille natuurgebieden, katapulteert je terug in de geschiedenis en serveert cultuur en gastronomie op het start- en eindpunt. De wandeling is eenvoudig, maar bij regenweer trek je beter stevige schoenen aan, want dan is er kans op modder. 3-2-1 start: laat je vervoeren in de Groene Gordel rond Brussel.
Let op: deze wandeling is geen lus: houd er rekening mee dat je nog terug aan je startpunt moet raken!
Welkom in Vilvoorde. Onze wandeling vertrok rechtover de basiliek Onze-Lieve-Vrouw van Troost. Dan wandelden we in het Hanssenspark naast het station van Vilvoorde dateert van 1898 en is aangelegd in de Engelse landschapsstijl. Boven de achtvormige vijver hangt een idyllische gietijzeren brug. Oorspronkelijk was het park omheind door art-nouveauijzerwerk. We vervolgden onze wandeling naar een Franse Versaille-tuin, een Engels landschapspark en een Japanse tuin: het landgoed Drie Fonteinen . Van het midden van het park kijk je uit op de pittoreske Lendrikkapel. Geniet van een hapje en een drankje in Brasserie De Drie Fonteinen en laat de kinderen ravotten in het speelbos en de speeltuin. En dan hop, naar de volgende bestemming! Vervolgens wandelden we in het Tangebeekbos , de groene long aan de Brusselse Ring . In het voorjaar kleurt de bodem prachtig wit en geel door bosanemonen, dotterbloemen, speenkruid en slanke sleutelbloemen.
Als laatste wandelden we in het Prinsenbos met het prachtig Prinsenkasteel in Grimbergen. In de plaatselijke sporthal deden we een terrasje want we hadden verschrikkelijke dorst van al die kilometers te stappen. Nog snel even langs onze eindbestemming, de Sint-Servaasbasiliek en dan was het tijd om naar huis te vertrekken. We hadden 14 kilometers op onze teller, dus meer dan genoeg voor vandaag. Gaan jullie eventjes mee op wandel met ons ? Veel wandelgenot !

What a beautiful summer day today, so we put on our hiking boots again to go for a long walk, namely, the Basilica Walk from Vilvoorde to Grimbergen.
Van Basiliek tot Basiliek is a 9 km long walking route through the greenery, from Vilvoorde to Grimbergen. It takes you through quiet natural areas, catapults you back into history and serves up culture and gastronomy at the start and finish. The walk is easy, but if it rains you'd better wear sturdy shoes, because there is a chance of mud. 3-2-1 start: let yourself be transported through the Green Belt around Brussels.
Attention: this hike is not a loop: keep in mind that you still have to get back to your starting point!
Welcome in Vilvoorde. Our hike started right in front of the Basilica Onze-Lieve-Vrouw van Troost.
Then we walked in the Hanssenspark next to Vilvoorde's train station, which dates from 1898 and was laid out in the English landscape style. An idyllic cast-iron bridge hangs above the eight-shaped pond. Originally, the park was enclosed by Art Nouveau ironwork.
We continued our walk to a French Versaille garden, an English landscape park and a Japanese garden: the Three Fountains estate . From the middle of the park you can see the picturesque Lendrikkapel. Enjoy a snack and a drink in Brasserie De Drie Fonteinen and let the children romp around in the play forest and the playground. And then hop, to the next destination! Next we walked in the Tangebeek forest, the green lung of the Brussels Ring. In spring, the ground turns a beautiful shade of white and yellow with wood anemones, marshmallow, spearweed and slender primroses.
Finally, we walked in the Prinsenbos with the beautiful Prinsenkasteel in Grimbergen. In the local sports hall we had a drink, because we were terribly thirsty after walking all those kilometres. We quickly passed our final destination, the Sint-Servaas basilica and then it was time to leave for home. We had 14 kilometres on our counter, so more than enough for today.
