Grenoble - While it sits at the foot of three glorious mountain chains and is often referred to as “Capital of the Alps”. It is surprisingly the flattest city in France.
Lovely little Grenoble is the gateway town into the French Alpes in the southeast of France. It is small but it is packed with charm and fantastic things to do.
The city is well known for the prestigious University of Grenoble. It is a world-renowned re-search institution and is known as one of the best places in the world to learn the French lan-guage. This has helped the city become a strong tech hub and Grenoble is also home to many world-leading companies in this sector.
The combination of this international community, the stunning backdrop of the French Alpes and the beauty of the city itself makes for a unique travel experience.
French author quoted that in Grenoble, every street ends with a mountain. One of the delights of Grenoble is to wander its streets and literally see a rather spectacular mountain at the end of each one.
Grenoble’s cable car links the centre of the city with the Bastille fortress. The cable car or bubble as it is known locally has been in operation since 1934. It was the first urban cable car and the round clear bubbles have become a symbol of the city.
The lower station of the cable car is on the banks of the Isere river. The cable car takes 5 minutes to climb from 216 metres to 482 metres and provides stunning views of the Grenoble on the way. The cable car costs 9 euros for a round trip. It’s worth taking a trip during your visit to Grenoble!
The viewing platform at La Bastille is one of the best places to appreciate Grenoble’s spectacular setting with 180-degree panorama views. And on a clear day, there are views of Mont Blanc.
There are the old Mandarin Caves, tunnels, great viewpoints, a museum and even a couple of restaurants at the Bastille.

FRENCH CITY IN THE ALPS | GRENOBLE VLOG | Two excellent hikes close by!
This French city in the Alps doesn't seem like a real place. This is our Grenoble vlog. We start this vlog by gently hiking up the closest ski hill to Grenoble, Chamrousse Ski Resort. Talk about a scenic hike in the Alps, and only 40 minutes by car from the city! From the very top we're able to see the entire city of Grenoble sitting in the valley, and make our way down the mountain for golden hour. The next day, we walk through this urban city into the older parts of town. Colourful buildings line the Isere river, surrounded by mountains, as the Grenoble cable cars goes up and down. We hike up to the Fort de la Bastille for an ever more phenominal view of Grenoble then head in for pain au chocolat, croissants, and lunch. Lastly we stroll through the vielle ville (old town) and finish the day during happy hour. This place has it all it seems.

Grenoble is a city in southeastern France, at the foot of the French Alps where the river Drac joins the Isère. Located in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, Grenoble is the capital of the department of Isère and is an important European scientific centre. The city advertises itself as the Capital of the Alps, due to its size and its proximity to the mountains.
Grenoble's history goes back over 2,000 years, to a time when it was a small Gallic village. It became the capital of the Dauphiné in the 11th century.
Industrial development increased the prominence of Grenoble through several periods of economic expansion over the last three centuries. This started with a booming glove industry in the 18th and 19th centuries, continued with the development of a strong hydropower industry in the late 19th to early 20th centuries, and ended with a post-World War II economic boom symbolized by the holding of the X Olympic Winter Games in 1968. The city has grown to be one of Europe's most important research, technology, and innovation centers, with each fifth inhabitant working directly in these domains.
The population of the city of Grenoble was 158,180 at the 2016 census, while the population of the Grenoble metropolitan area (French: aire urbaine de Grenoble or agglomération grenobloise) was 687,985. The residents of the city are called Grenoblois.
The many suburb communes that make up the rest of the metropolitan area include three with populations exceeding 20,000: Saint-Martin-d'Hères, Échirolles, and Fontaine.

We love Grenoble and find it to be entirely underrated, not super touristy, and an absolutely stunning city. With tons of outdoor activities all year round, free museums, beautiful lookout spots on a magnificent hilltop fortress, remarkable history, this city has ample opportunity and beauty!
In this video, we take you around the city as we explore new areas, play in the park, and go for very long treks down windy paths from the fortress. We finished our night in the Christmas Market, which is just a teaser for future videos to come.
