10 Best Small Towns to Live in England

What are the best towns to live in England? Living in England means different things to different people. For some people, it’s either London or nowhere else whenever it comes down to the best places to live in England. Others would consider some other big cities if London is taken out. But did you know there are some who actually desire to live in small towns in England? Please don’t jump to any conclusion as to why they choose to live in a small town. It might not be due to just economic reasons. As you’d see on our list of 12 best small towns to live in England, certain towns have charms and allure that can cause a lover of beauty and nature to consider making them home.
10. Windsor, Berkshire
The next of the best small towns to live in England is Windsor in Berkshire. This town, for centuries, remains a popular destination for tourists living in England or the entire United Kingdom and for tourists from all parts of Europe. Those who chose to live in this town may have been attracted by the added fame it once received as the royal wedding venue for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. You could find accommodation in Windsor Castle, the world’s largest occupied castle. Since it’s a weekend and holiday home for the Queen, those living in Windsor consider it a privilege to walk the streets with her majesty without visiting Buckingham palace.
9. Frome, Somerset
Now, let’s shift our attention to Frome as one of the 12 best small towns to live in England. We don’t need a lot of explanation that transcends being voted as one of the best places to live in the UK. Though small, this town has quality schools considered one of the best to cater to the needs of families intending to live in a small town in England. Many people living in modern homes in big cities crave living in a small town in a historic and architecturally fascinating building. There are plenty of these in the center of the town of Frome lined with many independent shops.
8. Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire
This town is home to the famous Henley Royal Regatta. This boat race coming up in early July always gives the residents of this beautiful spot which was established as a market town in the 12th century the opportunity to interface with thousands of visitors. Henley-on-Thames is chocolaty. Having a respite at Chocolate Café, a local hot spot known for chocolate treats, either hot or cold, is one reason to consider this town one of the best places to live in England. It’s a place people enjoy good cardiovascular health because walking the Thames Path National Trail is a regular part of life in this town.
7. Bakewell, Derbyshire
We next turn to Bakewell a small market town in the Dales of Derbyshire County. Bakewell too is among the best small towns to live in England. We agree with the popular opinion that ranks Bakewell well on the basis of its three highly rated principal primary schools, secondary schools, and preparatory school and college. Another one of the attractions making Bakewell one of the most popular small towns in England is its Peak District National Park and Derbyshire Dales. Living in this small town affords you a chance of finding a home in these prestigious locations with their charming stone cottages, attractive rugged moorland, and green valleys.

Worcester is a city in central England’s West Midlands region. By the River Severn, medieval Worcester Cathedral houses royal tombs, a crypt, and cloisters.

At The Commandery, a museum traces the building’s evolution from the Middle Ages through England’s Civil War to the 1950s. The timber-framed Tudor House Museum focuses on life in Tudor and 17th-century Worcester, with displays on traditional brewing and weaving.

4K Walk Through Great Malvern

4K Walk Through Great Malvern. Come with us as we take a short walk through Great Malvern. This is video one of Malvern. Taken on a cold day in January 2020. We let the camera do the talking so you see what we see and where we go.

Malvern Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Worcestershire, and around 30 miles southwest of Birmingham, is the town of Malvern.

The town is comprised of several local communities, with the largest being Great Malvern - the subject of this walk. It is situated on the slopes of the Worcestershire Beacon, a hill whose summit is the highest of the Malvern Hills range.

Malvern formed in the 11th century around Great Malvern Priory. This was originally a Benedictine monastery, but repurposed after the Dissolution of the Monasteries of the 16th century into an Anglican parish church, which it remains to this day.

Malvern is home to a number of natural mineral water springs. It is alleged that the medicinal properties of these waters were known since the Middle Ages, although it wasn't until 1756 that they garnered significant attention thanks to a treatise published by Dr John Wall extolling their curative properties. Bottling and shipping Malvern water soon became big business. In 1842 Dr James Manby Gully and Dr James Wilson set up water-cure clinics in the town, with some notable Victorian celebrity customers, including Charles Dickens, Charles Darwen, Florence Nightingale and Lord Tennyson.

In 1859 the railway arrived in Great Malvern. With it came an influx of tourists, including day trippers from as far out as Manchester. Hydrotherapy declined in popularity towards the end of the 19th century. As a result many Victorian hotels were converted into private boarding schools and rest homes.

The first motor car in Britain, allegedly, was built in Malvern between 1887 and 1889 by T. C. Santler. The Morgan Motor Company was founded in 1910 in Malvern, where it has produced motor cars right up until the present day. Hundreds of cars are built each year, all assembled by hand, with a waiting list for a car ranging anywhere from six months to ten years!

Due to its quiet location, Malvern was chosen to be the wartime refuge of several government departments. Secret research was carried out here, including the development of radar for aircraft detection, which was to prove decisive in the Battle of Britain, and ultimately, the Allied victory. The scientific establishment stayed on after the war, with further innovations to follow including flight simulators, cathode ray tubes, LCDs and touchscreens.

Malvern - Visit the Malverns

Malvern - Explore, Enjoy, Discover…

Great Malvern is largely Victorian but its roots go back much further. Iron and Bronze Age forts and tracks ran along the hills and Great Malvern was only a collection of small cottages until the Middle Ages. The oldest parts of the town can be seen around the Priory Church which was founded in 1085 when Benedictine monks settled here and built a Priory, which was a daughter house to Westminster Abbey.

Great Malvern originated as a spa village with therapeutic qualities attributed to its springs. It was the Georgian fancy of taking the waters and later the Victorian popularity of the water cure that transformed Malvern into a Water Cure town. Doctors Gully and Wilson brought hydrotherapy – the water cure – from Austria and built the first water cure house in 1845. The growing influx of visitors necessitated accommodation, information and social recreation to rival such centres as Bath and Cheltenham. Although you can no longer take the water cure in Malvern, many of the impressive buildings are still in use as public buildings.

The popularity of Great Malvern continued to grow even when the water cure had declined. George Bernard Shaw and Edward Elgar brought Great Malvern into the 20th Century with their music and theatre festivals held in the Winter Gardens. Today there is a new theatre complex in the old Winter Gardens; the old Iron Age tracks leading to St. Ann’s well and onto the hills are still walked by visitors; and cars as well as people now traverse Belle Vue Terrace. The delight of Great Malvern today is still its unspoilt beauty, with a glimpse of past Victoriana including our many still-working gaslamps, stunning views of the Severn Valley and exciting music and theatre.

Malvern is an impressive shopping destination, thanks to its hillside setting. There are bookshops – both new and secondhand. There are antique dealers, as well as auctions from time to time, not to mention quality furniture, fashion and food. The Malvern lifestyle attracts artists and craftspeople, so you will find some delightful works on show and in shops and galleries. But the best way to appreciate what Malvern has to offer is to visit and explore – there is much to find.

The Malvern Hills - End to End

Upton upon Severn and Great Malvern

Some views of Upton upon Severn and Great Malvern. These two picturesque towns are in the Malvern Hills District of Worcestershire.

Upton upon Severn provides one of the few crossings over the River Severn in the local area and long ago this small town used to be a port. Upton lies just to the south east of the Malverns and attracts thousands to its many popular events during the summer, plus it is also just 5 miles from the Three Counties Showground famous for the RHS Malvern Spring Festival and the Royal Three Counties Show. There is a wide selection of shops in the town plus many pubs and hotels. The grand church tower known as the 'Pepperpot' is the location for the Tourist Information and Heritage Centre. The modern looking bridge over the River Severn connects the town with the Upton Marina. Upton upon Severn also takes part in RHS Britain in Bloom and has won many awards since it first entered in 2003.

Great Malvern is located just on the east side of the Malverns and is the main town in these range of hills. The name Malvern is said to be derived from 'Moel Bryn', a Celtic name which means 'bare hill'. In the 19th century Great Malvern was known as a Health Spa Town and often associated with the natural spring water from the Malvern Hills which is still bottled and sold today. There is also the Morgan Motor Company in Malvern Link who manufacture beautifully styled cars such as the Roadster, Plus 4 and 4/4. In the town is the majestic Priory Church and the idyllic Priory Park Gardens which provide a place for relaxation and where bands play in the bandstand. Near to the gardens is the Great Malvern Theatre.
