Places to see in ( Carcassonne - France )

Places to see in ( Carcassonne - France )

Carcassonne, a hilltop town in southern France’s Languedoc area, is famous for its medieval citadel, La Cité, with numerous watchtowers and double-walled fortifications. The first walls were built in Gallo-Roman times, with major additions made in the 13th and 14th centuries. Château Comtal, a 12th-century castle within the Cité, offers archaeological exhibits and a tour of the inner ramparts. Carcassonne is a city in south-west France that is best known for its UNESCO World Heritage listed walled city. It can be visited comfortably as a day trip.

Carcassonne is divided into two main parts:

The Cité de Carcassonne, a medieval fortress settlement with a history that exceeds two and a half thousand years. Picturesque fortifications (over 3 km of walls with 52 towers, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves was partly shot here) were reconstructed by Viollet-le-Duc in 19th century (like with most monuments reconstructed in that time authenticity was not the main objective). It is listed in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The town centre, known as the ville basse (literally 'lower city'), where the other sights and hotels are located.

Perched on a rocky hilltop and bristling with zigzag battlements, stout walls and spiky turrets, the fortified city of Carcassonne looks like something out of a children’s storybook when it's seen from afar. A Unesco World Heritage Site since 1997, it’s most people’s idea of the perfect medieval castle. La Cité, as the old walled town is now known, attracts over four million visitors every year, peaking in high summer. Time your visit for late in the day (or better still for spring and autumn) to truly appreciate the old town's medieval charm.

The Cité historic fortress (built upon ruins predating Christianity) that was featured in the movie Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves. It is also told that the Cité inspired Walt Disney for the Castle of his Sleeping Beauty. You can enter the Cité through one of its four gates: Porte Narbonnaise (see picture, common entrance when you arrive by car).

Dunkirk and French Flanders

A short visit over the English Channel to the town of Dunkirk in the French Flanders region of France. We went with Norfolk Line from Dover to Dunkirk direct, a journey which takes just two hours. We also visited Bergues, Gravelines, and Hondschoote. Dunkirk has a great war museum too.

Places to see in ( Dartford - UK )

Dartford is the principal town in the Borough of Dartford, Kent, England. It is located 18 miles south-east of Central London, and is situated adjacent to the London Borough of Bexley to its west. To its north, across the Thames estuary, is Thurrock in Essex, which can be reached via the Dartford Crossing and the Dartford Tunnel.

Dartford centre lies in a valley through which the River Darent flows, and where the old road from London to Dover crossed: hence the name, from Darent + ford. Dartford became a market town in medieval times and, although today it is principally a commuter town for Greater London, it has a long history of religious, industrial and cultural importance. It is an important rail hub; the main through-road now by-passes the town itself.

Dartford is twinned with several other towns and cities abroad including Hanau in Germany, Gravelines in France and Namyangju in South Korea.

Dartford has two major buildings concerned with performance art. The Orchard Theatre, located in the town centre, is a fully professional theatre, providing audiences with a large range of drama, dance, music and entertainment. The Mick Jagger Centre, within the grounds of Dartford Grammar School on Shepherds Lane, was completed in 2000 and provides facilities for community arts across a wide region.

Dartford railway station is located in the town centre and is connected to London via three National Rail routes. The first railway London to Dartford connection was the North Kent Line via Woolwich Arsenal in 1849, connecting at Gravesend with the line to the Medway Towns. Later two more lines were built, the Dartford Loop Line through Sidcup, which opened in 1866, and the Bexleyheath Line, which opened in 1895. All the lines were electrified on 6 June 1926.

#3 A trip to Calais - France ????????

This article is about the town in northern France. For other uses, see Calais (disambiguation).
Kales redirects here. For other uses, see Kales (disambiguation).

Calais (UK: /ˈkæleɪ/ KAL-ay, US: /kæˈleɪ/ kal-AY,[2][3] traditionally /ˈkælɪs/ KAL-iss, French: [kalɛ] (About this soundlisten); Picard: Calés; West Flemish: Kales) is a city and major ferry port in northern France in the department of Pas-de-Calais, of which it is a sub-prefecture. Although Calais is by far the largest city in Pas-de-Calais, the department's prefecture is its third-largest city of Arras. The population of the city proper is 73,911, and that of the urban area is 128,931 (2017).[4] Calais overlooks the Strait of Dover, the narrowest point in the English Channel, which is only 34 km (21 mi) wide here, and is the closest French town to England. The White Cliffs of Dover can easily be seen on a clear day from Calais. Calais is a major port for ferries between France and England, and since 1994, the Channel Tunnel has linked nearby Coquelles to Folkestone by rail.

Due to its position, Calais since the Middle Ages has been a major port and a very important centre for transport and trading with England. Calais came under English control after Edward III of England captured the city in 1347, followed by a treaty in 1360 that formally assigned Calais to English rule. Calais grew into a thriving centre for wool production, and came to be called the brightest jewel in the English crown owing to its great importance as the gateway for the tin, lead, lace and wool trades (or staples). Calais remained under English control until its capture by France in 1558. The town was virtually razed to the ground during World War II, when in May 1940, it was a strategic bombing target of the invading German forces who took the town during the Siege of Calais. During World War II, the Germans built massive bunkers along the coast in preparation for launching missiles on England.

The old part of the town, Calais proper (known as Calais-Nord), is situated on an artificial island surrounded by canals and harbours. The modern part of the town, St-Pierre, lies to the south and south-east. In the centre of the old town is the Place d'Armes, in which stands the Tour du Guet, or watch-tower, a structure built in the 13th century, which was used as a lighthouse until 1848 when a new lighthouse was built by the port. South east of the Place is the church of Notre-Dame, built during the English occupancy of Calais. It is arguably the only church built in the English perpendicular style in all of France. In this church former French President Charles de Gaulle married his wife Yvonne Vendroux. South of the Place and opposite the Parc St Pierre is the Hôtel-de-ville (the town hall), and the belfry from the early 20th century. Today, Calais is visited by more than 10 million annually. Aside from being a key transport hub, Calais is also a notable fishing port and a centre for fish marketing, and some 3,000 people are still employed in the lace industry for which the town is also famed.

Visiting the French city of Lille.

Places to see in ( Lille - France ) The Citadel

Places to see in ( Lille - France ) The Citadel

The Citadel of Lille is a pentagonal citadel of the city wall of Lille, in France. It was built between 1667-1670. It hosts the Corps de réaction rapide France. Dubbed Queen of the citadels (Reine des citadelles) by Vauban, it is one of the most notable citadels designed by Vauban. It is remarkable for its size, the quality of the architecture, and the state of preservation today. Its various components have been classified as historic monuments in 1914, 1921 and 1934 respectively.

This Queen of Citadels is the matrix of most citadels designed by Vauban. Established on the border of Flanders, it was part of a double-line of fortified towns between Gravelines, Dunkirk and Maubeuge-Rocroi. It delineated the famous Pré Carré (square field) conceived by Vauban comprising 28 fortified cities. From Lille, Vauban supervised the construction of the many citadels and canals of the North, which controlled the border between France and Belgium.

Lille was taken from Spain by French troops in August 1667, and Louis XIV immediately ordered the construction of a fortress. Louis Nicolas de Clerville and Vauban proposed plans. Vauban's were those chosen by the King. Work was started in 1668 under the direction of Lille's master mason, Simon Vollant. In 1671, the citadel became operational while Vauban continued to shape the city by constructing, a few steps away, a new neighborhood around the Rue Royale. The design of the citadel follows a simple but very effective idea: not one of its walls can be approached by the enemy without them being under fire from a nearby wall.

The citadel was constructed to the west of the city on marshland at the junction of the rivers Deûle and Bucquet. This allowed the use of swamp water and mud as a natural defense to make conditions more difficult for any possible enemy besieging the citadel. Through a system of locks and water gates, 1,700 hectares around the citadel could be flooded to a depth of 55 cm. A wide esplanade interrupted the plans, connecting the fort to the city. In 1750, a canal along the esplanade was drilled according to the plans drawn up by Vauban.

France Grand Fort Philip and petit Fort Philip

We are Iggs'n'Morts and we are in France with our harley Sportster. In this video we are headed to Gravelines and the villages of Grand Fort Phillip and Petite Fort Phillip. its a short exploration trip just on the outskirts of Dunkirk. The villages are picturesque, lovely places to relax. We had refreshments on the beach front of Petite Fort Phillip before heading back to Dunkirk beachfront. We have realised that the restaurants do not tend to open until 7pm to serve food. We had a look around and decided on an unassuming Pan Asian restaurant set back from the beach front. We were amazed at the selection and quality of food at the Maitre Pan. It was exquisite and delicious dispite its humble looks from the outside and low key family vibe of the owners. The meal here cost 20 euros, £18 PP.
Tomorrow we head home on the Dunkirk to Dover ferry, join us for that!

Some views of Dunkirk, France

There are plenty of things to see in Dunkirk.

Day 5-6 | Astonishing nature

I left Den Haag, little less dramatic than when I arrived. I passed Belgium pretty much without even noticing and arrived in France. Gravelines, or Grand-Forth-Philipe, was a beautiful place, a vast beach that you could sit and just watch.

The second leg was to Saint-Valery-en-Caux, where I stay for two nights, in a wonderful apartment. Had a shower of rain and thunder, but though the temperature sank from 23, it is still nice. Watch also the pics in the end of the video.

Big thanks to you all, over 700 subscribers and I really believe in that we'll reach the goal of 1000.
